Dad Vail Regatta

Welcome to the biggest race in the country. The Dad Vail easily sees over 150 teams in attendance, even a smattering of clubs from the west coast. Boat trailers line Kelly Drive for miles and every time you turn around, there's a new vendor with something crew-ish for sale. There's two straight days of racing, from 7AM to 7PM, during which practically the entire city comes alive to come watch. The competition is incredibly diverse and oftimes tough, yet we still manage to compete with the best of them.

Head of the Genesee 2006

The crew's varsity squad heads to Rochester for the Head of the Genesee. Held in early October, this is the first race Binghamton Crew attends each new school year. Dozens of teams attend to take advantage of the beautiful course and last bits of warm weather. While we didn't win any trophies, we managed to hold our own, making the day a huge succes.

First Annual John Mckenna Memorial 5k 2007

We held this race in March in honor of a recently fallen Alumnus. John McKenna spent four dedicated years rowing on this team before going on to become a Marine. When we heard that he had been killed in the Middle East, we immediately wanted to hold a race in his name. This first race saw more than 300 people sign up. The current team had the honor of meeting some of John's family and the past rowers that he was closest with. The proceeds from the race went to a Fallen Marines fund as well as a fund we created in order to purchase a boat that will be named in John's honor. We plan on holding the 2nd annual race this coming March, 2008. The proceeds from this race should be enough to allow us to buy John's boat..

Frostbite and Braxton Regattas

The Frostbite and Braxton are the last two Regattas we attend in the fall season. Held the on same weekend in early November, both races draw dozens of teams with a wide range of skill levels. Most years, atleast one of our boats comes home with medals. This is our last trip of the Fall season, so everyone always rows their best and has a good time, and when its held on the Schuylkill River near the heart of Philadelphia, how could you manage not to?

Head of the Fish 2006

This is the first race for the new rowers that just joined in September, and I'm sure they'll agree, a great first race experience. Saratoga Springs in late September is notorious for iffy weather and you'll see that this time was no exception. Low temperatures, consistent rain, and mud atleast six inches deep that claimed more than a few shoes (maybe a coxswain or two) tried to ruin the day. Fortunately, we weren't going down easy. We ended the day with many congratulations from our coaches and a mud fight or two before we jumped back on our bus and headed home to Bingtown. Please excuse the meager amount of photos. The photographer loves his camera dearly and didn't want to subject it to the rain. Check out the Fish photos for 2007, and you'll get a better idea for what this race really is.

NYS Championships

Lucky for us, NYS Champs takes place basically in our backyard, over in Whitney Point. Unfortunately for everyone that ever attends though, one of the two days is always horribly terrifying in the weather department. This year was no exception. It's days like these that make you wonder why you decided to row in the first place, when freezing rain is being driven into your face and you're barely moving because your boat is full to the brim with uncomfortably cold water.... We tend to not think about it..... Anyway, we race against many of the competitive crews from all over the state. Despite the hellish weather, it's always a good time and afterwards we get dressed up in some formal attire and go to our yearly team banquet. We celebrate the success of the year and say goodbye to graduating seniors who we'll sorely miss.

Spring Metropolitan Regatta

Our first away Regatta of the Spring. We finally beat the bad weather and got some sun and high temperatures for this one. Plenty of teams come to participate, so the competition was pretty stiff, and the race schedule was packed. Racing started around 9 and went right on through the day. We finally got to see how we sized up against some of the area's best and we actually left with some hardware (medals). They even surprised my Novice eight with a big shiny trophy.

Busfield Memorial Regatta

The 9th annual Busfield Regatta, held at our very own boathouse. A bunch of teams in the general vicinity come for the day and take part in some friendly competition. The weather was definitely not a plus for the day but that couldn't keep us down. Plenty of friends and family braved the rain to watch us turn in some good perfomances, making the day an overall success

Camp Bob Cooper 2006

This is our yearly spring training trip down to the sunny South to get a head start on some water time in the spring. We spend a solid week of three-a-days to get our technique and rhythm back. We manage to get more water in this one week than during the rest of the semester, so camp is considered the most important bit of rowing a member of this team can do. We do get a half day of relief though, with our trip to Savannah, Georgia. Everyone trades their spandex in for some snazzy attire and we stop off at the beach before we head into downtown Savannah for some good times and good food. And, you really can't avoid bonding with everyone, considering we're around each other 24 hours a day.

Fall 2005 Regattas

The first three races for incoming novices (myself, a fledgling photographer, included). We got lucky with some pretty good weather for all three, which is something a little unheard of in this business. Looking back on those first races, it really is an experience you can't miss. The seemingly millions of people running around in spandex is a bit overwhelming but that first race on the water started the thirst that only competing can quench.
