Gabrovo & Plovdiv
Every year, Sept. 6th is a national Bulgarian holiday because it marks the unification of Eastern Rumelia and Bulgaria in 1885. Eastern Rumelia, now known as southern Bulgaria, was seperated from the rest of the state but returned to the Ottoman Empire and this day commemorates the unification. I took advantage of this 4 day holiday weekend and made a trip to a few more southern locations. The first stop was Gabrovo - a medium sized city, about 60,000, known as the humour capitol. It has a charming city center and is situated at the foothills of two mountains. After I traveled to Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second largest city, which has a long history and unique attractions. It is a lovely old town with a 19th-century appearance and has one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres in the Balkans which is still used for musical and drama performances.
