Chinese New Year Eve 2009

A special "Lamp Lighting" ceremony was held for world peace and health during the Chinese New Year Eve at the monastery. The night was -25C (-35 with windchill). People lighted the candle of the lotus lamps and made wishes for the coming year. The Dharma masters and devotees recited "Om ma ni pa mi Hung" between 8:00pm and 1:00am. After that all electrical Lights in the Buddha Hall were turned off. It was then luminated by Candle light only. The photographers continued to take photos until people coming for morning recitation at3:30am.

Dragon Boat 2008

Avatamsaka Monastery conducted the Opening Ceremony for the Calgary Dragon Boat Race 2008. Three Dharma Masters and about 20 lay people arrived at the waterfront at 8:30am on Saturday August 2. A temporary altar was quickly set up. The Dharma Masters purifed the boundary by upholding the "Great Compassion Mantra" and praying for the sucess of the event. The Dharma Masters led the five VIPs to the dock to re-vitalize the "dragons" by putting ink onto their eyes. The whole ceremony took about 20 minutes.

Graduation ceremony

The monastery held a graduation ceremony for a Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture school in Calgary on Sunday August 2, 2008. Eleven graduates, with their relatives and friends, the school staffs and guests, were excited to attend the ceremony in such an adorn environment.

Lilac festival

Avatamsaka Monastery set up a booth to promote vegetarian food in the Lilac festival on May 18, 2008. Despite the cold rainny weather, the street was packed with people.

Buddha Birthday

Avatamsaka Monastery celebrated the Buddha birthday (Vesak) on Sunday, May 11. There were a lot of happy mothers appearing with their children to celebrate Mother's Day.
