The Tip of Borneo aka Simpang Mengayau
The Tip of Borneo, also known as "Simpang Mengayau", is situated at the northern-most tip of Borneo, ie the meeting point of the Sulu Sea and South China Sea. "Simpang Mengayau" is modified from its original name of "Sampang Mangazou" in the dialect of Rungus, a sub-group of the Kadazan-Dusun in Kudat. The writings on the rock at the Tip of Borneo has this to say about its origins:
"The Tip of Borneo, Simpang Mengayau – also known as Tanjung Sampang Mangazou in the language of the Rungus who are natives to Kudat. Tanjung means 'tip', Sampang a 'junction' and Mangazou 'battle'. According to Rungus folklore, this was the site of a fierce battle thought by their forefathers, defending Rungus territory against invading enemies. The fleet of Ferdinand Magellan on its famous voyage to circumnavigate the globe was said to have stopped here for fourty-two days to repair their ships".
An annual event held here is the Sunset Symphony by Kota Kinabalu Symphony Orchestra around April – May.
