Mainz - A nifty modern fountain portraying [I think] the four apostles. That is at a minimum Peter on the left and Paul on the right.
Mainz - Statue of St Boniface just outside the Dom. During the rise of the Carolingians to the kingship of Germany (and downfall of the Merovingians), Boniface (an Anglo-Saxon missionary from England whose birth name was Wynfrid), worked heavily to convert the pagan Germanic tribes on the edge of the Frankish kingdom. His role in both the conversions and in assisting the Frankish kings in their relationship with the Papacy would have a profound impact on the formation of Charlemagne's future empire. He was given the archbishopric of Mainz (he was the first) which at the time meant full ecclesiastical rule over the Rhineland area.
Mainz - Dom - Dedicated to St Martin of Tours; Triple-naved, dual chancel and mostly Romanesque structure with a few eclectic additions; begun under the direction of Bishop Wiligis and finished 1037 but there have been many additions/changes since then; Orients west. Is still the episcopal see of the Bishop of Mainz. This view is of the West spire/chancel.
Mainz - Dom - Eastern spires
Mainz - Dom - View from the south while standing in a busy Market.
Mainz - Dom - Archway over the Market Portal. The church is completely surrounded by buildings which makes it tough to photograph. On the other hand it gives Mainz a really intimate feeling. The bronze doors are the original from the time of Wiligis (ca. 1000).

Mainz - Dom - My picture taking skills were lacking this day. This is a beautiful late gothic portal (c. 1420) that leads to Memorie, the chapter house, where some of the cathedral's canons are buried. It's offlimits.
Mainz - Dom - Neat little staircase to the level above the east choir. There is another, more convenient and modern one, nearby.

Mainz - Dom - Archbishop Sigfried II von Eppstein (d. 1249), the kingmaker. This is a sepulchral slab (no sepulcher remains at this spot). He is signifying that as Archbishop of Mainz he has the right to crown kings.
Mainz - Dom - Sepulchral slab for Mathias von Bucheck?

Mainz - Dom - Interesting remnants
Mainz - Dom - I believe this is a view into the Nassau chapel (access from the crypt). As a visitor all you get to see is a darkened hallway and the mysterious effigy. It's very eerie.
Mainz - Dom - Dom cloister where the cathedral canons are still buried.
Mainz - Dom - Cloister, east wing. Empty on a sunny day and oh so beautiful.
