I bought used moutanbike in an excellent condition, very good CrMo frame, 21 Shimano STX gears and such...
...and disassemble it...
Jackpot! horizontal dropouts...
I hate stickers and product graphics! Imagine your car with huge logo over the doors, please do, it will be your future car, it is much easier to make new graphics every year than better design.
... all the pimples and such will be shaved of...
it was a close shave
Excess will be removed...
ARRRRRRR
... I decided to keep the rims, and sanded them for painting...

When cleaned, the parts were beautiful, this bike wasn't ridden more than once. I organised a sale to help finance the project: http://picasaweb.google.si/andraz.tarman/Bajkparts?authkey=Gv1sRgCO337qb4jqittwE#slideshow/5350040698440249538
The design is chosen! It will be homage to Guinness, my favourite beer.
All the holes were brazed.
Frame 2,15 kg. Very light for CroMo!

Considering laser or water cutting a bashring to protect my trousers.
Since I am a bit short of money I am riding a virtual bike...
...actually I have to wait for parts to arrive from Germany. And they are on holiday now.
Demanding part of paintjob.
I welded the handlebar on the stem...
... and cut the handlebar a bit shorter.
It looks nice, I feel reluctant to paint it.

Thanks to Rogmaraton for painting my bike and Keki for the place and all the tools. < foto Keki
I really like trouble. I am having my hubs machined out of dur aluminium and crmo steel. It would be much easier to order stock hubs. Now I wonder would it be cheaper, faster and better too...
My machined hubs before painting... foto Subtilen >
Can not wait to test them!
aluminium 16€, steel 1€, bearings 15€, machining 50€, spoke holes 15€ Total: 97€ without nuts
A word about design: This hubs are made of less parts than usual, there is no spacer between axle and bearing, it is only possible because axle is machined too. That gives space for bigger and stronger sealed bearings. MTB frames have wider rear hub clearance than roadies and instead of using spacers as with commercial product I extended the hub body - this extremely wide hub holds the rim firmly in place and keeps it true. Some weight could be shaved of by making walls thinner in some places but I have chosen cleaner looks and some extra strength. The flange height is above normal for lower forces on spoke holes etc. but not a typical high flange for weight sake, it would be an overkill. Final result is roughly half a kilo of bombproof awesomeness. < foto Subtilen
coloured and laced front hub
Home made hubs work fine...
Anodised cracks with water cut bashring.
Black chain, black cracks, black bashring, black frame, black tyre...
Spare anodised bashring.

I spent 50€ on tyres, 80€ on paint, 110€ on hubs, 25€ on spokes, 95€ on chain, cahinring, cog, toeclips. Water cutting of two bashrings costed me 12€... and anodyzing of seatpost, chainring, cranks and bashrings was 10€. Seat was free, thanks Rogmaraton!
10.5 kilos, half of it are tyres :)
