decided to use my vacation to visit an olf dear friend in beijing (jon henshaw). one night's layover in kuala lumpur meant a quick trip into the city, wandering the streets a bit, and leaving early the next morning.

30 office things

khamseng picking mangos, mae hien's final presentation for grad school, staff sharing day. then debi's farewell party on may 26. then a photo shoot with chit. then global family school supplies, the day i got locked in the bathroom and pataka saved me, and seng playing guitar.

28 mae sot, refugee camp

we took an overnight bus from bangkok to mae sot, a town on the border of burma/thailand with a refugee camp. burma issues staff kweseh and chamu took us to the bridge to see people crossing legally and illegally. the police say there are just too many people coming illegally - they don't even try to stop them anymore.we happened to be there during sang kron (new year), so there are more people playing in the river and streets than usual. the day after arriving we went to the mae la refugee camp.

went to a tourist town up north with my host family (cousins). they're super silly. highlights: buying watermelons out of the field, swimming with water buffalo, making a canadian friend whom they insisted on calling “ben ten,” after a thai cartoon. good times. cousins tha, than, and ouk.

22 gdg women's day mitaphab

mitaphab attended women's day activities at gdg (gender development group) in march, to represent mcc and sell some food. somehow it turned into a fashion show, with a catwalk and everything.

my dear friend ben turned 20, and his family threw an appropriately extravagant bassi ceremony and party. i met a guy named pepsi, who has a little brother named fanta. there was more than $100 - worth of beer lao. it was crazy.

lao disabled women's center, where an MCC service worker named kaylie works. they make handicrafts for income generation, and train disabled women who often don't have many employment opportunities in laos. eva came from germany to help them with handicraft designs.

15 luang prabang vacation

i went to luang prabang (unesco heritage site) with ben, ariel and matt for a short vacation. we spent lots of time wandering around the very picturesque town, eating western food at joma, and playing with kayaks and elephants and waterfalls.

sometimes i go to foreigner church (lao people can't come b/c the govt doesn't approve). this is their christmas service. plus the lao evangelical church's service. plus the office party.

we went to interview people involved in MCC projects in this very poor district, sang thong. the farmer told us how he's doing with the seeds MCC donated after the flooding wiped out his rice crop. we also saw clean water projects, peer education sessions, and the mobile health team in action.

08 crazy staff day meeting and thongkham's farewell party

every 4 months we have a meeting for all MCC staff. it's pretty great. plus we had a farewell party the day after for thongkham, a lovely hmong man who worked as a translator here.

06 pvg and mitaphab

mittaphab is a group of lao young adults (mostly college students) who gather to talk about conflict resolution and how to make their own lives better while improving their communities. once in a while they hold trainings for kids in primary and high school, passing on methods of dealing with problems. this time it happened at PVG, a local youth center where happy works. they're building a mud house there, hence the first few photos.

02 staff retreat in thailand

soon after i arrived, all MCC staff headed to thailand for a retreat. we toured a rubber farm (a popular trend in laos right now), and went to a gorgeous waterfall.

01 beginning

it takes forever to get to asia. then when we got there we ate fried bugs. the admin staff took matt, ben and i out for an authentic lao lunch, then explained unknown items in the market. also photos of office staff, morning market, and our first walk around town.
