Teacher's Day 2011

Close 'Celebration' of Service!

At the end of the two years of service, PCVs attend a “Close of Service” conference to help prepare them for readjustment, finding a job, and general good time with friends. We also jumped over to the beautiful Lviv before heading back to the barren East of Ukraine.

Close 'Celebration' of Service!

Near the end of Peace Corps service, volunteers attend a conference to help prepare them for re-adjusting to America, finding a job, and how to wrap up your life in Ukraine. Then we hopped over to the beautiful Lviv for a couple of days before heading back to the barren East.

FLEX PDO

FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange) is a State department-sponsored program for students from the former Soviet bloc. This select group of students will spend one year in America as exchange students. But before they depart, they must endure (or enjoy!) a four-day orientation taught by former FLEX students and Americans (like me!) The four days that I spent with these students was so rewarding and they showed me the truly bright spot for Ukraine's future.

One of the things my school wanted from me since arriving in Kremenchuk was an all-English, city-wide camp. This year was the camp's debut, Stellar English School. TTS camp

Every year my school has a camp for kids from villages in our oblast. They are considering having an English element, or possibly English week, during next year's camp, so they asked me to host a two-day experiment this summer. Here's a pictorial chronicle of the experiment. A special thanks to the 8 volunteers who agreed to come and work at the 90-kid camp.

debate camp!

In early June, I ran a weeklong debate camp for my 10th grade students. I convinced some really talented PC volunteers to help me out, and although there were some unexpected bumps in the road and a learning curve, everyone -- the volunteers, the Ukrainian teachers and students -- really enjoyed it. We are considering making this a bigger venture for next summer so stay tuned as things develop. Until then, check out the pictures and captions to get a glimpse of the camp.
