Summer Lunch Program 2010

Ahimsa Village participated in the Bald Eagle Area School District’s Summer Lunch program. This program provides free lunches every Monday-Friday to children and youth in the Bald Eagle School District and is a joint effort of the Martha United Methodist Church and local volunteers. Kelle and the kids grew a garden in a raised bed donated by the community and built at Ahimsa Village.

Raised Bed Gardening Workshop

Raised bed garden workshop coordinated by Rosalind McIntosh of the Appalachian Zen House. Two gardens were built near Julian Woods Ln. About 15 people attended.

Raised Bed Garden

Members of Appalachian Zen House install the first raised bed garden for David Dwight in State College. The garden was donated by Rosalind and Bob, Kelle, and Rosalind help to install it at David's home. This garden serves as a demonstration site for empowering local low-income people without land to grow their own food.

Henrietta

Henrietta is our second rescued animal at Ahimsa Village. She was being savagely attacked by a new rooster at her former home. Her former caretaker was worried for her life and contacted Ahimsa and asked if we could provide her a home. We happily consented and renovated the old chicken house.

Summer Camp 2008

Activities this year included bread baking, boat building, dances of universal peace, yoga bowling, cooking, swimming, cooperative games, drawing, hiking, making flower pots, gardening and more. StrawProperty

On july 27, 2008 AV entered into agreement with the School of Living to lease the Straw property. This 3 acre parcel includes a small house, 3 wells, and a spring. The lot will be used as space for our newest partner, Frank Higdon, and his family to build an eco-house. Other thoughts include using the existing building as a school.

NVC Basic Training

Basic Nonviolent Communication (NVC) Workshop held at Ahimsa Village, June 13-15, 2008. The workshop was facilitated by Francois and Inessa from Quebec and Wash., DC. The purpose of NVC is to create human connections that empower compassionate giving and receiving. NVC involves both communication skills that foster compassionate relating and consciousness of the interdependence of our well being and using power with others to work together to meet the needs of all concerned (from the Center for Nonviolent Communication Web Site - www.cnvc.org)

Bee Installation

Liam Goble of Half Acre Farm installs 5 bee hives at Ahimsa Village. The hives are part of Liam's home hive program. The home hive program allows people to sponsor and participate in the management of a hive in exchange for honey at the end of the season.

Permaculture Orchard

The PC orchard was a major undertaking in the spring of 2008. We planted 69 woody plants, 25 raspberries, and 100 strawberry plants. Our friend, Patty Ceglia, developed a comprehensive PC plan for the orchard. Patty has been trained in PC and has worked with Dawn Shiner of the School of Living. She teaches PC at Wilson College (Chambersburg, PA). Patty created guilds, sun traps, and swales. Many of her concepts are still in development. Eventually we plan to interplant annuals in the PC orchard. The woody plants were a mix of fruit and nut trees. We incorporated a number of native fruits into the plan. The PC orchard was supported by the Friends of Ahimsa Village.

Visit to Vines

Ahimsa village members visit "Fresh from the Vines" farm and education center near Meadville, PA. Becky and David Vines sell organic greens and produce at market and healthy baked goods. They also conduct workshops and have regular tours for school children and other interested people.

Center for Amazon Community Ecology Presentation

February 15, 2008 program at Ahimsa Village - Challenges and Opportunities for Traditional Communities in the Amazon Rainforest with Campbell Plowden. Indigenous and other traditional communities in the Amazon face intense pressures from loggers, ranchers, miners, and colonists. They also feel pressed to clear forests to improve their livelihoods. Campbell Plowden, PhD, recently started the Center for Amazon Community Ecology to promote forest conservation and sustainable development in the Amazon. Dr. Plowden will talk about his work in the Amazon region and the Center.

Spider fence installed at Gary's house near Unionville. He keeps the grass cleared 6' around fence.
