Talent Quest in Melbourne

Well, one thing is definitely true Ability has got TALENT!!!!! Students and teachers went to Urban Central on the 23rd of December to celebrate the end of the year. On the day there were some fantastic performances and all students were involved. The winning class “thrilled” the audience with Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, Salsa dancing and Beyonce’s “All the single Ladies”, they were lead by their teacher Ruby. They won a trip to the Great Ocean Road which was kindly donated by Colourful Trips.

Fashion Parade

At Ability we like to mix things up a little, have fun and put on a show. The final lesson of each day is always focused on speaking and communicative activities and each week we have a theme. This week it was Fashion and the students took part in different activities. A few classes went on a Fashion scavenger hunt, which is a group challenge to find particular items of clothing in a set amount of time. The winning team wins prizes. This is an excellent activity to build fashion vocabulary. It encourages teamwork and let’s face it, dressing up is always fun, especially when you try on something absolutely ridiculous.

Black and White Party

Once again, what a fantastic end of month party?! The last one before our Christmas party. Lot’s of students made a great effort to dress up and take part. You all looked amazing! The theme was black and white and the photos look fabulous. There were fashionistas with fancy footwork all around. The girls were far more fashionable than the boys! Well done girls! Boys you’ll need to pick up your game for the next one!!

End of Term BBQ Party

This term we organised a barbeque in a beautiful spot along the Yarra River around the Botanical Gardens. It was a great day, perfect weather for a barbeque. As well as playing games we gave the students the task of talking to 10 people they had never met and to find out some information about them for example their job, their hobbies, their family, etc. They then had to vote on who they had found the most interesting.

Australia Week

As part of Australia week (which we run every 12 weeks as part of the curriculum) the students at Ability take part in activities to learn more about Australian culture and history. We also went to play cricket at the Alexandra gardens, which are located on the banks of the Yarra River. It was a perfect sunny day and a nice end to the week! Well done to all the students for being such good sports! Check out the photos!

Op Shop Trip

Do you love shopping? Here at Ability we do! Especially when it's fashion week and we've spent time in class talking about clothes and learning vocabulary. What better way to try out our new vocabulary than an OP SHOP SCAVENGER HUNT wich means we have one hour to frantically search Melbourne's best second hand shops for some very specific clothing items... Ever wanted to find a gaudy purple prom dress or a tacky leather miniskirt? The scavenger hunt is your chance. We all get to be stylists, models and photographers as the member of each team must be photographed for evidence. Melbourne is the best city for second hand shops and Smith St, where the hunt takes place, is second hand paradise. The clothes are so good, and so reasonably priced, students often go home wearing items from the hunt. Mask Party Melbourne

Last Thursday we decided to go with a Masquerade theme for our monthly party. The students had to get hold of a mask to wear. There was a prize for the best mask, which had to be made, not bought. The students did a fantastic job and their masks were great. Well done to those who made their mask! The winner was Ricardo from the Advanced class who came as a road sign! Check out the photo!

Op Shop Scavenger Hunt!

Last week was Fashion week at Ability Melbourne. Students from all levels discussed everything from Fads and Faux Pas to prints and fabrics. What better way to end the week then a good old SHOP!! So we decided to organise a scavenger hunt! Students were put into teams of different levels. Their challenge: to find 10 outrageous clothing items on a shopping list, try them on and be photographed for evidence. This would give the students the opportunity to practice the vocabulary they had learnt during the week.

Australia Week (Melbourne)

Culture Day 2010 Melbourne

On the 24th of June, Ability Education had its first ever Culture Day in Melbourne and it was a huge success! Students came in from 9am and worked hard to prepare their decorations and food, then waited for the judges, Nicola and Aaron, to come around and judge each room. After all that work, the students were free to go and try each other’s food, learn about each other’s cultures and listen to all the different kinds of music.

Culture Day 2010 Sydney

“Culture Day! This event only happens once a year at Ability Education, but its magic is long lasting as people make real friends in Australia from so many different countries, trying new exotic food and bridging the cultures closer together. Students get a glimpse of something new and maybe, exciting. For example, the dance Salsa is called salsa because it is hot and spicy like the sauce you eat!”

World Cup Party

On the 10th June we decided to organise a Pre-World Cup party, encouraging everybody to wear the colours of their flag and party. 500 students were united in the one place from countries all over the world. However, Ability Education had the best nationality mix: Mexicans, Germans, Colombians, Brazilians, Czech, Saudi Arabian, Japanese, Thai etc, etc. The party started officially at 9pm, but really kicked off around 11pm. Ability AfterLife 2010

The Ability Afterlife program on Thursday 25 March was a great success with many interested students attending. We had representatives from over 20 universities and colleges.A big thank you to our volunteers from the Business English course who assisted in running the day. The did a fantastic job in organizing Marketing Strategies and Event Management for the day as well as all their help on the day.Thank you everyone for your support!

Culture Day 2009

This year the Culture Day celebration at Ability Education rocked! Not only can our magnificent students speak English but they can: cook all kinds of delicacies, dance many kinds of dances, play the guitar in tune, sing lullabies, paint, make origami, act, and lastly, they can clean too!!! Absolutely amazing!

Snowy Mountains 2008

After months of anticipation, planning and dreaming Ability education students had the pleasure of skiing and snowboarding in Australia. Initially students were apprehensive. They wondered, even doubted the fact that it snows in Australia. However, the Snowy Mountains impressed everyone. The highest peak is 2105 meters above sea level. The team of 12 students, current and ex-students were satisfied with the variety of slopes, the fast lines for the ski lifts and with the softness of the snow. Pure powder delight!

Cupcake Day

On June 16 2010 the Business Class at ABILITY held their sales day for a three-week business task. The course is based around real-world tasks, and this one concerned the creation, production, marketing and selling of a food product to the other students. The Business Class formed two teams, and each team sold a product. One team chose 'Paspussa Day' which was a traditional Saudi Arabian cake, while the other team chose to connect the day to the Football World Cup, coming up with 'World Cupcake Day'. Both teams invested their own money, created financial plans with projected expenses, turnover and profit, made the products and sold with gusto. Both teams sold out and made a profit. The cupcake team donated a portion of their profit to Westmead Children's Hospital.

Ability Soccer Team - Sure and Steady

Ability is looking forward to this season with early signs of a strong showing. The past three seasons have seen us steadily improve and a good player base this year has us hopeful. In the off season we've been doing some training and have uncovered some good talent so things look good. However this has been the case over the last few seasons so we are aiming for some consistency this season with a much more disciplined approach. We're really hoping to be one of the teams to challenge GCA's grip on the league but newcomers Greenwich and Academies have really thrown some spice into this year's competition so it's going to be exciting to see who can take the title.
