Six times Association of Surfing Professionals world champion Kelly Slater (Cocoa Beach FL, USA) was beaten in a tense dual against reigning ASP world champion Sunny Garcia (HAW) in round three of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, Australia. Slater was eliminated from the event by a mere 0.35 points posting a heat score of 23.30 points (out of a possible 30 points) to Garcia's 23.65 points.
