Zurich hike

On Saturday afternoon I rode the public transit to Uetliberg, the end of the line just west of Zurich. I hiked along a ridge above the lake, rode a gondola back down to the valley, and then hiked along the valley.

Tuesday morning we went to the Zurich airport for the flight home. Don't expect daily pictures of our exciting lives for a while!

Zurich 3

Monday we spent in Zurich. In the morning we went sight-seeing together. The high point (literally) was the climb up a church tower. The high point (figuratively) was another church where there was to be an organ concert this week, and the organist was practicing. I spent the afternoon with a GemStone customer discussing our recent presentation at ESUG. Beverly did some more sightseeing and some shopping.

Sunday we spent a few hours in Geneva, then took the train to Zurich. We had dinner in the old town area and then settled into a nice hotel.

After a night in Geneva, we got some good directions to the Adventist college (just over the border in France). We took public transit to the border and walked across. A nice lady (who grew up in New York!) took us up the hill to the campus, and someone else helped us find the guest rooms. We went to church, then hiked up the mountain behind the campus.

Friday we took the train from Lugano to Geneva where we were to get a ride to the Adventist college. Through some mixup, we didn't get to the college, so got a room near the train station.

Lugano 30

As I walked through the park I found a young Swiss military band performing. They sounded great. They had a precision drum corp that performed as well. This afternoon, Nancy, Janet and I rode the train south about 10 km to Melide where there is a tourist spot: Swiss Miniatur. There they have reproduced over 100 hunderd reknowned Swiss buildings. In an hour you can see famous castles, cathedrals, chalets, etc. We spent several hours there and returning. It was pleasant. --Beverly

Day 3 of ESUG included a few presentations then a social event--an outing up Monte Generoso on a small cogwheel railway. Unfortunately, the Cannon camera battery did not take the full charge I offered it the night before, so I didn't get very many pictures. Fortunately, the Nikon camera was available and did fine.

Day 2 of ESUG. On the walk to the meetings I met a municipal garbage truck that was emptying bins on a busy street in the middle of morning rush hour. I wondered how these things worked, and was not disappointed at the complexity. At the conference, I took more pictures of the presentations. Then Beverly and I got some pizza and soup.

Today was the first official day of the ESUG conference. Most of the activity was 80 guys (and 3-4 gals) in a poorly-lit conference room listening to presentations. I took a couple pictures on the walk from the hotel, but nothing more. I'll try to be more ambitions tomorrow, but I thought I'd let you know that we had a good day.
