Mahala
Photos taken from Chirpan's Roma Mahala (Gypsy Ghetto). The Roma have been historically discriminated against in Bulgaria, the Balkans, and quite frankly, worldwide. During Communism, they were only allowed to enter Chirpan every Friday for market day. They still live, literally, removed from the reset of town in a de facto segregation. My work as a Peace Corps Volunteer has been teaching English two to three times a week in their neighborhood and trying to bridge the divide between the Roma and Bulgarians of Chirpan.
