Vetiver Systems can provide the very essance of poverty alleviation. It s a technology that the most poorly educated and youngest members of the community can understand. Vetiver System - Propagation and Planting

The Vetiver plant that is used for Vetiver System is sterile and non invasive. It therefore has to be propagated vegetatively. In most instances this is done by plant clump division (there are other propagation methods that can be found at www.vetiver.org. This presentation focuses on propagation by clump division. The key to success of the Vetiver System is the production of good quality plants and in large amounts. Vetivery nurseries can be of any size and even the poorest farmer has the power and capability of producing such plants for either his own use of for sale to others.

Vetiver System - Soil and Water Conservation

The Vetiver plant has been used traditionally by some south Indian farmers for soil and water conservation. It is only over the past 20 years that a great deal of research has been done on its effectiveness for soil and water retention. Please note that although vetiver grass is extremely efficient in doing its task, other conservation methods including mulching and contour tillage is important if erosion is to be completely controlled.

Besides on farm soil and moisture conservation, Vetiver Systems have other advantages that enhance farm income: soil nutrient retention, pest control, mulch, shading, wind protection, compost material, and forage (if cut and managed correctly). Finally there is a growing market for vetiver planting material for non agricultural Vetiver Systems applications. Vetiver System for Mine and Quarry Rehabilitation

Mines and quarries often comprize oif material that is hostile to plant growth and at the same time is a point source of toxic waste that seeps into streams and that contaminate river basin waters. Identify the point source problem, and Vetiver System will go a long way at fixing the problem. Vetiver grass is extremely tolerant to the heavy metals in most of these sites and will hold them in its roots. At the same time it will prevent sediment that contains these pollutants from entering the streams and rivers. Because of the good ground cover vetiver will also prevent wind blown dust from these sites from effecting nearby populations.
