2010 Bioscience Legislation Bill Signing

Governor Bob McDonnell signed into law a number of bills from his successful "Jobs and Opportunity" legislative agenda that received broad bipartisan backing in the recent General Assembly session. The bills signed included tax deductions on capital gains derived from investments in technology, energy, biotech and science-based companies operating in the Commonwealth; and establishing a bio-tech research performance grant program. Among the many leaders from the technology and business communities in attendance were Bobbie Kilberg, President and CEO of the Northern Virginia Technology Council; Pete Jobse, President and CEO of the Center for Innovative Technology; Mark Herzog, Executive Director of the Virginia Biotechnology Association; John Backus, Managing Partner of New Atlantic Ventures; Spencer Williamson, President and CEO of Intelliject LLC; and Michael Grisham the President of GPB Scientific.

Vendors of advanced biomedical equipment were there in force to show off their latest products. 2009 Virginia Bioscience Business Roundtable

More than 100 bioscience leaders from across Virginia participated in a half-day conference to discuss the role of the public sector in bioscience-related economic development. Participants included Governor-Elect Robert McDonnell and the Lt. Governor Bill Bolling. The event was sponsored by the Virginia Biotechnology Association as well as a robust list of national and state partners.

Southwest VA Life Science Forum 2009

The 2009 Southwest Virginia Life Sciences Forum was held on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at the Inn at Virginia Tech. More than 100 people from the regional bioscience community turned out to network and review more than 30 corporate and academic research posters. Charlottesville Biotech After Hours for CBEF

More than 80 turned out for a special fundraiser for the Chesapeake Bioscience Educational Foundation (C-BEF) in the lab at Indoor Biotechnologies in Charlottesville. The event featured an evening of networking with life science professionals, a tour of Indoor Biotechnologies’ labs, art work by local artists, and great networking. The event was organized by the Virginia Biotechnology Association. Additional supporters included the Charlottesville Business Innovation Council, Indoor Biotechnologies, Woods Rogers PLC, Birch Studio Graphics, Diffusion Pharmaceuticals, Afton Scientific, Garris and Company, PGxHealth, Klann Plastics.

SW VA Science Forum Dec 08

VA Bioscience Legislative Subcommittee

These are images from the final meeting of the Virginia Bioscience Subcommittee at the state capitol November 19. The 2008 General Assembly directed the joint subcommittee to identify the top recommendations to enhance and promote the life science industry in Virginia. Members of the panel included Senators Janet Howell, Ryan McDougle and Mark Herring and Delegates Mark Sickles, John O'Bannon, Kathy Byron, Bob Purkey and Margie Vanderhyde. Citizen members include Dr. Erik Hewlett of the University of Virginia, Robert Skunda of the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park, Pete Jobse of CIT and Mark Herzog of the Virginia Biotechnology Association. Aneesh Chopra, Virginia's Secretary of Technology, also served on the subcommittee.

Hampton Roads Bioscience Luncheon

More than 72 people attended the first Hampton Roads Bioscience Luncheon at the Air & Space Museum in Hampton on October 1, 2008. The event was co-sponsored by the Virginia Biotechnology Association, EVMS, Leclair Ryan, the City of Hampton and the Hampton Roads Research Partnership. Phil Hamilton, Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Committee gave remarks regarding his views on the Commonwealth’s support of life sciences. Keynote speaker, William J. Wasilenko, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Research at EVMS, will followed presenting "The Hampton Roads Bioscience Cluster: Unique Opportunities for Partnering and Technology Innovation."

Senate Finance Committee Trip to Prince William

The Senate Finance Committee traveled to the "Innovation@Prince William" technology park on September 18 to visit American Type Culture Collection and hear about the new bioscience cluster that is developing in the county. They heard from Martin Briley of PWC Economic Development about how the park was founded and how it has made a huge impact on the growth of biotech in that community. The Virginia Biotechnology Association participated in the events and tour.

Wyeth Facilities Tour Sept 08

Members of the Virginia Biotechnology Association (VaBIO) enjoyed a private tour of the Wyeth Consumer Healthcare manufacturing facility in Richmond on September 17th. More than 700 work at this advanced manufacturing facility that produces more than a dozen Wyeth products. 08 Mid-Atlantic Bio International Meeting NZ Embassy

The Virginia Biotechnology Association, Tech Council of Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association organize a series of embassy luncheons for the international community to discuss bioscience issues in the Greater DC region. These meetings also serve as an excellent planning forum for international participation at the annual Mid-Atlantic Bio Conference. Representatives from several embassies were in attendance including Norway, New Zealand, Canada and the UK. Speakers at this event were Michelle Robinson from Covance and Alan Rudolph of Adlyfe.

VA General Assembly Biotech Subcommittee Meeting Aug 08

The Virginia General Assembly's Legislative Subcommittee on Biotechnology met for the first time on August 19 at the state capitol. Delage Mark Sickles is the chairman and Senator Janet Howell is the vice chair. Speakers included Mike Schewel, former Secretary of Commerce and Trade as well as Patrick Kelly from the Biotechnology Industry Organization. The Virginia Biotechnology Association was instrumental in the passage of the joint resolution establishing the subcommittee.

Hampton Roads Bioscience Cluster Steering Committee

The Virginia Biotechnology Association's chairman, Maciek Sasinowski and Mark Herzog, the executive director, serve as members of the steering committee for the new Hampton Roads Bioscience Cluster. Bill Wasilenko of EVMS is the chairman. The first meeting took place on May 29, 2008 in the IDA board room in Hampton, Virginia. Attendees came from a wide range of organizations such as Eastern Virginia Medical School, the College of William and Mary, Arkios BioDevelopment; Old Dominion University; Soluble Systems, CIT, the City of Hampton and the Hampton Roads Research Partnership.

08 VA Bioscience Legislative Breakfast Pictures

The Virginia Bioscience Legislative Caucus (VBLC) was launched at the 2008 Session of the Virginia General Assembly. On Tuesday, February 5th, more than 70 people met for breakfast at 7 am at the Richmond Marriott to formally kick-off the new Bioscience Caucus. 16 members of the state legislature were able to participate. Breakfast attendees heard from speakers such as Delegate John O'Bannon and Senator Janet Howell, the House and Senate co-chairs of the new caucus. They also heard from Mark Herzog of the Virginia Biotechnology Association (VaBIO), Patrick Kelly of BIO, Brett Vassey of the VMA, Bob Skunda of the Virginia Biotech Park and Aneesh Chopra, Virginia's Secretary of Technology.
