2009 United Way Victory Celebration

People in the St. Louis region have once again demonstrated their generosity and caring by contributing millions of dollars to help their neighbors and strengthen their community. United Way of Greater St. Louis celebrated its 2009 campaign victory at the St. Louis Zoo the afternoon of Thursday, Nov. 12, announcing that, together, the community has raised $6xxxxxx million in gifts and pledges. This means United Way will continue to help more than 1 million people by investing more than $1 million each week in local, quality agencies in 2010.

Hometown Huddle in St. Louis

United Way of Greater St. Louis and NFL's St. Louis Rams teamed up and headed to the Monsanto Family YMCA for Hometown Huddle. Drills, exercises, healthy eating and character building talks took place with more than 100 children ages 4-18. Rams players Laurinaitis #55, Dahl #43, Fells #46, Allen #62 and Smith #77 all helped out with the fantastic, fun day.

Multicultural Society Kick off

Nearly 300 people attended United Way's first Multicultural Society leadership event which was held at Monsanto. Aida Fuentes, co-owner and public relations of El Mundo Latino, is the 2009 chair of its Multicultural Society. Created in 2009, this Society hopes to bring people of all ethnicities in the region together for networking, help them in becoming leaders serving in our community and more.

United Way Leadership Soiree

KMOV-TV's Vickie Newton and her husband Dwayne Butler, CEO of Betty Jean Kerr People's Health Centers held an intimate gathering at their home for United Way of Greater St. Louis to help create awareness about United Way. Approximately 40 people attended.

Bloomer Bash

Women in the Lincoln, Warren and St. Charles communities were asked to bring new women’s undergarments to donate to Robertson Center, Turning Point and Women’s Center, all domestic violence shelters in the Tri-County region. More than 484 undergarments were received for the shelters and $4,300 was raised for United Way. Thank you! Several United Way partner agency representatives were in attendance to share information about their organizations with the women in attendance. The Women’s Leadership Society of United Way of Greater St. Louis hosted the event and sponsors were Bodine Aluminum, Inc. and Toyota.

FoodShare Press Conference at St. Louis Area Foodbank

Between June 15-20, more than 100 companies across the region held company-wide FoodShare food drives with their employees. UPS, UniGroup and Laclede Gas are prominent partners – using their trucks to transport food from the companies to St. Louis Area Foodbank. That Saturday, eight area Schnucks Markets also participated. More than 156,000 pounds of food was collected during the drive. Thank you!

Biggest Baby Shower - Women's Society

The Women's Leadership Society of United Way's kick off event was a huge success. More than 400 women came to the baby shower and donated nearly 5,000 items. Those items were then transported (thanks to UPS) to 23 of United Way's partner agencies that work with children and kids. Also - the event brought in more than $186,800 to help people in this community through United Way (a 52 percent increase over last year's kick-off event). Thank you to Wells Fargo Advisors for the location and to UPS for their hard work!

Employee Campaign Coordinators tour of funded agencies

Almost 60 employee campaign coordinators met at Monsanto on Friday, May 22 to meet and listen to Hugh Grant speak about why he thought their role with United Way is vital. The ECCs then boarded one of four busses and were taken to two United Way funded agencies to tour and visit to better understand what some of the quality agencies United Way helps fund do on a day-to-day basis.

EITC Press Conference

Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which is a federal tax credit designed to help people increase their financial stability numerous ways. If you live in St. Louis City or County and your household income was $42,000 or less in 2008 you may qualify for free tax help – and you just might get more money back, too. Charmaine Chapman Society Thank You Event

As the premier leadership giving initiative for African-Americans in the St. Louis region, CCS set a record for fundraising in 2008. Co-chaired by Larry Thomas and Deborah Patterson, CCS raised more than $1.76 million — a 10 percent increase from 2007 — toward the overall United Way attainment of more than $68.4 million. Not only is this African-American giving initiative the best it has ever been in St. Louis: it’s number one in the country among United Ways.

Community Financial Access Pilot press conference Nov. 19

The St. Louis region and seven other communities nationally have begun implementing Community Financial Access Pilot projects thanks to the U.S. Department of Treasury. Since the beginning of November, The St. Louis Collaborative, made up of 21 non-profits, including United Way of Greater St. Louis, financial and government institutions have been conducting surveys to gather data on the un/underbanked residents of the region. The survey will gather information on the barriers and challenges people face in accessing financial education, products and services. Once complete, the survey will allow the Collaborative to develop useful approaches to help people gain access to the financial mainstream and improve their financial stability. The Collaborative is focusing its efforts mainly in St. Clair and Madison County in Illinois and in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and St. Charles Counties in Missouri.

2008 Hometown Huddle

Eight St. Louis Rams football players and two Rams cheerleaders participated in the United Way/NFL Hometown Huddle on Tuesday, October 14. The players arrived at the United Way-funded Scott Air Force Base Youth Center in St. Clair County, Illinois to volunteer their time with nearly 150 after-school care students ages 6-18 from the base. During the event, activities included football drills, a HOPSports interactive fitness video workout tailored for the children, and a talk about character and nutrition. The Rams players, along with volunteers from United Way and the base, tossed footballs, danced to the video, and cheered the kids on during the hour-long program. Healthy snacks were also available for all of the children.

Battle of the Bands 2007

Five of St. Louis’ premier corporate bands will trade spreadsheets, BlackBerrys and business suits for guitars, mics and drums at the third annual United Way Battle of the Corporate Bands. The event is part of the United Way of Greater St. Louis’ 2008 campaign, with a goal of $65.5 million. The show will feature the Laclede Gas Flames, AT&T All-Stars, Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s e-Rockers, Citi St. Louis’ The CitiBand and Fleishman-Hillard’s Pro-Bono and the Non-Billables. Off Broadway is donating use of the venue for the event. The “winner” will be the band that raises the most money for the charity. This is the third year local corporate bands have squared off to benefit the United Way. Last year’s event raised more than $4,000. Tickets will be available at the door ($8), from one of the corporate bands or from the United Way, for a minimum donation of $5. Call 314-421-0700 to order tickets from United Way. This year a panel of celebrity judges will also be on hand.
