2013 Spring DA

More than 330 delegates to the union's 2013 Spring Delegate Assembly adopted UUP's annual spending plan, debated nearly a dozen resolutions and special orders of business, attended several committee meetings, and elected three officers and nine Executive Board members during their two-day policymaking convention.

UUP’s three-day Leadership Conference and Chapter Presidents and Vice Presidents Retreat brought together about 140 members at the Sagamore Resort in Bolton Landing. The conference included a series of workshops to help the future leaders hone their skills.

Finance Committee Meeting

Members of UUP's statewide Finance Committee came together April 2-3 to finalize details of the union’s tentative 2013-2014 operating budget, which delegates will vote on during the 2013 Spring Delegate Assembly May 3-4 in Albany. Among the agenda topics were revenue projections, chapter funding allocations, and the impact of UUP contract negotiations and statewide elections on the upcoming spending plan.

Elections & Credentials Committee

UUP Elections and Credentials Committee members pair off to electronically tabulate votes cast in 2013-2015 chapter elections. Committee Chair Dave Kreh of Cortland and Vice Chair Robin Nichols of Upstate Medical University oversee the process—from requesting and verifying nominations, to creating and mailing ballots, to counting votes, to certifying results … and everything in between. UUP Secretary Eileen Landy is officer liaison to the committee.

2013 AFT Higher Ed Conference

A handful of UUPers joined their higher education colleagues from across the country to put the finishing touches on a new AFT Quality Agenda for Higher Education. The UUPers traveled to San Diego March 8-10 for the AFT’s Higher Education Issues Conference “Confronting the ‘New Normal:’ Union Driven Solutions for the Future of Higher Education.” The agenda was a key component of the conference, which included more than 25 workshops and forums on topics ranging from organizing community coalitions and legislative activities, to online education and career opportunities.

UUP Advocacy Day

UUPers in large numbers brought the union’s call for more funding for SUNY to the Albany offices of more than 70 legislators on Feb. 26. Ninety members from chapters from across the state walked to the state Legislative Office Building and pressed lawmakers and their staffers for more state dollars for SUNY and to support the union’s effort to keep SUNY Downstate Medical Center a fully functioning state-run public hospital. Members, many of who stayed in Albany to take part in UUP advocacy efforts after attending the 2013 Winter Delegate Assembly, made passionate pitches for $25 million more in appropriations for SUNY and to restore the state subsidy for SUNY’s three teaching hospitals to $128 million.

2013 Winter DA—Feb. 25

A detailed explanation of UUP’s new tentative contract agreement with the state and President Phil Smith’s call for members to become more involved with advocacy efforts highlighted the 2013 Winter Delegate Assembly, Feb. 24-25 at the Hotel Albany. Delegates approved several resolutions and a constitutional amendment making the officer of contingents a chapter’s fourth DA delegate. They also adopted a special resolution to honor late Brockport Chapter member Bill Rock, a founding member of UUP, and honored Optometry retiree Bob Kasprak with the Pearl H. Brod Outstanding Active Retiree Award.

Jan 8 Rally at Albany

Eight busloads of UUP members from Downstate and Central Brooklyn’s faith, labor and community organizations packed The Well of the Legislative Office Building Jan. 8 for a rally to protest cuts in jobs and services at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. They were joined by UUP members from SUNY hospitals in Syracuse and Stony Brook and its medical school in Buffalo and other UUP chapters, along with union members and leaders from NYSUT, CSEA, PEF, the state AFL-CIO and the New York State Nurses Association.

West Indian Day Parade

Dozens of Downstate Medical Center Chapter members carried signs and wore red UUP shirts printed with the words “Save Jobs at SUNY Downstate” as they marched in Brooklyn’s annual West Indian Day Parade on Sept. 3. Downstate Picketing

More than 300 SUNY Downstate Medical Center workers and supporters participate in an Aug. 8 rally to protest hundreds of job cuts at the hospital. The rally drew unionists from UUP, PEF, CSEA, uFT, SEIU 1199, and the New York State Nurses Association. The rally was organized by UUP and led by Downstate Chapter President Rowena Blackman-Stroud, UUP's statewide treasurer.

2012 AFT Convention

UUP delegates were in Detroit July 27-30 for the 2012 AFT Convention to debate dozens of proposed resolutions that will set the stage for the national federation, and to elect AFT officers and board members. Vice President Joe Biden addressed the more than 2,500 education, health care and public employee professionals from across the country, including more than 50 from UUP. The UUPers asked their union sisters and brothers to back five UUP-sponsored resolutions that call on AFT to: work with NYSUT and UUP to protect jobs and services at SUNY Downstate; urge passage of the Violence Against Women's Act; oppose any military action in Iran; protect teacher education programs; and support a P-20 data collection system.

Downstate Rally

WNY Professionals Conference

UUP VP for Professionals Philippe Abraham hosts the first Conference for Western NY Professionals, held June 27 at Buffalo State's Dick Smith Teaching Pavilion at the Great Lakes Center. Professionals spent the day in seminars on workload creep, bullying in the workplace, and saying 'No' as a professional. The workshops were led by NYSUT labor relations specialists assigned to UUP.

The event also included a general session led by UUP President Phil Smith, breakout sessions based on campus types, an overview of UUP resolutions to NYSUT’s annual policymaking convention, and an update on the union’s contract negotiations with the state.
