Tuleyome's Goat Mountain properties

Thanks to dedicated planning and to the labor and support of many people, Tuleyome has finally been able to purchase the White Ranch Glades, Wyman Flat, Root Glades, and Addington Springs parcels on the upper south side of Goat Mountain. These lands include the highest sources of the N. Fork of Cache Creek and are integral to the integrity and conservation of the upper watershed and the area in general.

Sulpher Ridge area

This region above Clear Lake is accessed by High Valley Road. A trail system has been proposed for this area. Attractive mixed forest is found in the canyon and ridge areas here, as well as fine views of Clear Lake from the High Valley Road.

Eel River Upper Headwaters

The beautiful landscape of the upper watershed of the Eel River offers a great variety of scenery and habitat. In general the area lies N of Lake Pillsbury and is accessed from the Clear Lake area via forest highways--paved, then dirt.

Eel River

Portions of the Eel River flow through public lands of the proposed National Conservation Area. This major river is one of the "life-bloods" of the state and supports a variety of habitat and wildlife. These views show some of the character of the upper Eel River. The hillsides along the river display good stands of the native bunch grasses which have largely disappeared elsewhere throughout California. Notice too the mixture of forest types along the Eel River here.

Sheetiron Game Refuge

The game refuge is located in a portion of the upper Eel River country. No hunting or firearms are currently allowed, but there has been some talk to do away with the refuge system entirely. In addition to rich wildlife habitat, the area features streams furnishing pure drinking water, and a number of existing and potential recreation opportunities.

Walker Ridge

There are three designated ACECs on Walker Ridge (Areas of Critical Environmental Concern). Pictures in this album include views in the central and southern ACECs. Some of the pictures also are of proposed development sites which would involve heavy construction. Development would require nearly tripling in width and straightening of the existing Walker Ridge Road, in order to move large machines. The existing road is shown in one of the pictures--hillsides and hill tops like this would have to be bulldozed out for industrial road straightening. Racoon Lagoon

Racoon Lagoon is the northernmost place to access the North End Trail for hiking on the public land along Lake Berryessa. The trail is mostly level and easy, while the scenery is beautiful.

Long Canyon is an area of the former Knoxville Ranch now in public ownership, and it provides abundant scenery. Good opportunities exist here for short hikes or for a long loop route.

Rocky Ridge - Long Canyon - Wolf Creek

The waters from Rocky Ridge in Mendocino National Forest flow on one side down Reister Canyon into the beautiful Wolf Creek, and down the other side into unspoiled Long Canyon, west of Indian Valley Reservoir.

Pope Canyon

The Pope Canyon trail follows the old Pope Canyon road above Pope Creek, until it reaches a grassy shore on an arm of Lake Berryessa. Further trail construction is planned to lengthen the route.

N. Fork Cache Creek

N. Fork Cache Creek flows clean and pure from Mendocino National Forest, starting in springs below Goat Mountain. It later becomes an important water source for valley farmers

Brophy Canyon

Brophy Canyon is part of the Cache Creek Natural Area located near state highway 16. Much of Brophy Canyon is unspoiled and it is home to a variety of wildlife including the California newt, shown in one of these pictures.

Cedar Roughs

Cedar Roughs is a mountain area W of L. Berryessa and Pope Creek. Endemic plants on its serpentine soils include a large stand of Sargent cypress. The existing trail crosses Pope Creek, then an "access meadow," and as of 2010 continues part way to the Cedar Roughs

Maxwell Creek

Maxwell Creek public access to the Cedar Roughs area starts from the Pope Canyon road. A trail follows the route of an old ranch road parallel to Maxwell Creek.

Cold Canyon

The Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve on U.C. land is a popular public destination practically every day of the week. Parking for the trails is alongside state highway 128, near the town of Winters. Some of Cold Canyon is also part of the Putah Creek State Wildlife Area (for information on which please check the websites of California Dept. of Fish & Game, and Yolohiker).

Little Stony Creek

Little Stony Creek flows E off the high slopes of Goat Mountain in the Mendocino National Forest and past the town of Stonyford in Colusa County. County Road 42 (Goat Mtn Road) travels along Little Stony Creek, and the Little Stony campground is located here (busy on weekends).

Goat Mountain

Goat Mountain is a triple-divide peak: its waters flow into Cache Creek, Stony Creek, and the Eel River. It has a wonderful variety of habitats, vegetation, and wildlife. Improved dirt roads give access to public campgrounds and trails in the area.

Hale Ridge

Hale Ridge RNA (Research Natural Area) features a fine display of Knobcone pine. Improved dirt roads access the general area of the RNA, which is bounded by Salt Creek and Rice Fork of the Eel River.

Deafy Glade

Deafy Glade is a large scenic meadow below the south slopes of Snow Mountain. Deafy Glade is bounded by an unnamed stream to the east, and S. Fork Stony Creek is also nearby, just to the south. Several campgrounds are close at hand and two trails lead to the glade.

Blue Slides

The Blue Slides area is to the S of Snow Mountain and contains forest habitat suitable for Spotted owl and perhaps for Pacific marten. Forest Hwy M 10 passes through the area, and the Blue Slides Trail provides additional access to upper Blue Slides canyon. Bear Creek campground is nearby.

Bear Creek

Bear Creek flows W from Snow Mountain, and feeds into the Rice Fork Eel River. Its shady side below Blue Slides Ridge supports forests while its sunny south-facing slopes grow chapparal (micro climate effect). An attractive campground is located on the flats of Bear Creek.

French Ridge

French Ridge to the W of Goat Mountain commands views of public lands in all directions. French Creek flows N from the slopes of French Ridge to feed the Rice Fork Eel River. Forest roads 16N01 and 17N11 access the area, and the Deer Valley campground is close by.

Frenzel Creek

Frenzel Creek flows through an area of serpentine soils in Mendocino National Forest, near the town of Stonyford. The Frenzel Creek Research Natural Area has been established in recognition of rare and endemic species living there. The Goat Mtn. Road and Little Stony campground are nearby.

Briscoe Creek

Briscoe Creek starts high on the slopes of Sheetiron Mtn. in the Mendocino National Forest. This clear, scenic creek is largely unspoiled and flows generally E toward the central valley. It is accessible from Stonyford via the Black Diamond road, then road 18N38, and finally trail 7W23.

Knoxville Wildlife Area

The former Knoxville Ranch in the Berryessa back country has been purchased into public ownership largely since 2001, and is now administered as Knoxville Wildlife Area. Public camping is available nearby at the Knoxville ORV recreation area, but space can be limited there.

Zim Zim Canyon

This former ranchland has been purchased into public ownership, clearning escrow in 2005. Access is from Berryessa-Knoxville Rd., and a hike of about 3 miles leads to views of the falls. The waterfall is a popular destination in the spring. (Be prepared to wade several stream crossings along the way).
