South Coast Ridge Road

Another Tiger4x4RV dirt road adventure: up Los Burros Road (AKA Willow Creek Road), northward on South Coast Ridge Road, camp at Prewitt Ridge, continue north, then westward down pavement on Nacimiento-Ferguson Road, joining Hwy 1 at Kirk Creek campground. This road could probably be driven without 4WD in good dry conditions, but any vehicle much wider than the Tiger's 87 inches might have some problems from overgrown vegetation. The photos show a fairly wide road; I couldn't get out of the truck at the narrow overgrown parts. At one point, I even washed all the exterior door handles because they had been thoroughly brushed with poison oak and I am very allergic to it. Photos were taken April 29 & 30, 2008.

Tiger Prowls the Sierra 9-07

1518 miles. Altitudes of about 0 to about 10,000 feet. 12 nights of camping, only 5 of those in campgrounds. Explored parts of 3 National Forests: Stanislaus, Humboldt-Toyiabe, and Inyo. Lots of dirt road driving, some 4WD. Snow twice. Stanislaus NF was a big surprise for me; there is SO much wild and deserted country out there!

Chimney Peak BLM Backcountry Byway, June 2007

Could a passenger car do this road? Probably, going slowly and with an experienced driver. Much washboard. Many one-lane sections with turnouts. Downward-bound drivers must back to a turnout to allow the upward-bound to pass. This is a very remote area. I figured it would take about 1.5 hours to drive from my camp at Long Valley to where I might be fairly sure of finding another human.
