Long-tailed Ducks, Mergansers, and Grebes at Duck Hollow
After two days of precipitation, long-tailed ducks, red-breasted mergansers, hooded mergansers, and wood ducks came down in Duck Hollow. The three male red-breasted mergansers dove repeated near the parking lot, while the long-tailed ducks would float down the Monongahela with the current to the Homestead Grays Bridge. There they would fly back upriver about a half-mile and float back down. We watched them about an hour and a half, and they repeated this circuit four times. The hooded mergansers were on both sides of the river at times, while the wood ducks stayed in a cove above the mouth of Nine Mile Run. The grebes I photographed had been in the area a couple of days. [Photography was done on an overcast, snowy afternoon, so the quality could be better.]
