March in May - Birmingham's march for jobs.

Thousands of Trade Unionists marched through the streets of Birmingham on Saturday to send a message to the government to protect jobs and to not leave a legacy of unemployment & broken comunities. They followed a route from Five Ways to Broad Street and on to Centenary Square.

Single Status demonstration

Thousands of teachers, council workers, and college lecturers from around the West Midlands gathered in Victoria Square on 24th April to demand better pay. It was the biggest show of discontent by public sector workers since the 1980s.

Around 3,000 attended a rally in Victoria Square, and heard Unison Rep Caroline Johnson launch a passionate attack on management’s plans. She argued that workers had to campaign against performance related pay and job flexibility not just wages.

Poland

Stirrer editor Adrian Goldberg has been in Poland researching a BBC radio documentary this week. Gdansk is now one of the ever growing band of European destinations served by low cost airlines. Ryanair boss Michael Leary once said there was "nothing to see there” but his company now serves the city along with Wizzair and BA.

ROVER RALLIES IN LONGBRIDGE Hundreds of Rover and Austin enthusiasts turned out at Cofton Park on Saturday for the second Pride of Longbridge rally – designed to strengthen community ties in the wake of the closure of the local car factory in 2005. The event kicked off with a cavalcade of motors which approached the venue in convoy from Hopwood Services on the M42. Stirrer editor Adrian Goldberg opened proceedings which were expertly compered by Brum Poet Laureate Spoz – Giovanni Esposito – who used to work at the plant. Northfield MP Richard Burden put in an appearance along with local councillor Jan Drinkwater, as well as a few up n coming bands – and even a group of belly dancers. All in all, a fine day out – and a real credit to key organiser Gemma Cartwright of the Rover Community Action Trust.

Bournville

Residents in Birmingham’s famously ‘dry’ Quaker village of Bournville will find out today whether Tesco's application to operate the first off-licence in the area is successful. In the meantime, we’ve got pictures of the vandalism already taking place there. We’ve reported previously about the campaign to prevent the sale of booze at a new Tesco Express on Linden Road our community correspondents have also told us about the extent of alcohol-related vandalism in nearby Cotteridge. Even without the impetus of cheap booze, youngsters have taken to defacing and even burning the rest house on Bournville Green.
