Modern spheres are made using a combination of flat- and cup-shaped saws and grinding tools. Material is first shaped into a cube, and the edges and corners are cut off. The block is then placed between a set of two or more cup-shaped tools that turn in opposite directions. It may take many hours, but eventually the block will be reduced to a perfect sphere.
