2009 Get Green Fest

On Saturday, April 25, SoBRO hosted the 2nd Annual Get Green South Bronx Festival. The annual event, which takes place in St. Mary's Park, includes hundreds of local youth, residents, and community leaders coming together for a day of performances and educational activities relating to making the Bronx a safer, healthier place to live. SoBRO would like to extend a major thanks to everyone who helped make the day possible, espcially the working committee members. The event was made possible by support from Waste Management and the New York Power Authority.

Winter 2009 SoBRO Youth Events

Every year, SoBRO students make art, write plays, design projects, and it is important to us and to them to display these efforts in a way befitting the work put in to them. In the first few months of 2009, several such events took place: a SoBRO-sponsored Black History Month event, annual Multi-Cultural Day, performing art exhibition and robotics competition all took place in a brief span. Here are some pictures commemorating these events, so please join us in congratulating the students on all of their hard work.

SoBRO YouthBuild

SoBRO has operated a YouthBuild program since 1998. This program serves high school dropouts ranging in age from 16-24; typically these youth face huge barriers to making even the most basic change in their own lives. The resources available to young, undereducated urban youth are often tragically inadequate, but YouthBuild provides them with an opportunity to work and learn and ultimately make a better life for themselves. Many YouthBuild students were at best idle and apathetic before entering the program; others were on the streets. YouthBuild gives them a better choice. These pictures were taken on a visit to one of YouthBuild's construction training sites, where participants are rehabbing formerly trashed apartments into viable apartments. They are earning money, providing housing units to a community that desperately needs them, and working toward a better future for themselves, and all they needed to do it was a paintbrush and little guidance and support.

SoBRO Real Estate Projects

This album contains photos of some of SoBRO's most recent real estate development projects and other examples of high-impact investment going on in the South Bronx. SoBRO rehabilitates existing buildings and creates new buildings in vacant space in order to transform blighted areas into beautiful and viable spaces to live and work. To date SoBRO has created over 500 units of affordable housing in the South Bronx, with nearly 600 more in the pipeline. Our development of commercial property, stimulating the economy of this once-neglected area, is also experiencing major expansion: The largest development ever undertaken by SoBRO, on Boston Road in the Crotona Park section of the Bronx, will be under construction within a year. When completed, it will contain 175 units of affordable housing and 30,000 square feet of commercial space. An artist's rendering of the project is included in this album.

SoBRO 36th Anniversary Gala

On Wednesday, November 12, SoBRO celebrated 36 years of building a better Bronx at the Hilton New York Hotel. Nearly 500 people celebrated our work as well as the accomplishments of those honored: Turner Construction Company, New York City Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo, Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD) Commissioner Jeanne B. Mullgrav, Sultana Distribution Services’ President Brian Gold and Former MLB Second Baseman, Roberto Alomar. Bill Evans, Eyewitness News Meteorologist was an engaging and entertaining host for the evening’s festivities. We are acutely aware of the pressure this economic climate places on businesses and individuals, and we are immensely grateful for those who came and supported us regardless. We couldn't continue to offer the life-changing services that are highlighted in our success stories (included in this album) without the help of our community, so we would again like to thank our Gala honorees and guests.

Roberto Clemente Plaza Revitilization

On September 19, the Community and Economic Renewal Departement of SoBRO teamed up with the NYC Department of Transportation and various other local organizations to enrich and revitalize Roberto Clemente Plaza in the heart of the South Bronx. Further improvements are planned for the months ahead, but this day involved installing shrubs and plants to direct the flow of traffic and beautify this vital public space.
