Yanamarca Hike

I did the 3500 vertical-foot hike with four brethren of the Vista Alegre branch up Pumami mountain to the ruins of Yanamarca. The round-trip hike took about eight hours, some of it along treacherous, steep, edge-of-cliff trails.

Grobergs Visit Us in Tarma

Joseph Groberg, MTC president, and his wife Jeanne, visited us in Tarma. He was a missionary in Peru when I arrive in 1964. He later returned as mission president. He is now here for the third time as MTC president.

Reading Rally in Tarma

To encourage children to read, the local schools and local government combined to have a huge rally in the central square. It involved music, signs, speeches, and students carrying books.

Semana Santa in Tarma

The week before Easter is Semana Santa (Holy Week). It is the biggest holiday in Tarma. Thousands from elsewhere in Peru come to see and participate in the processions, dances, and mostly the alfombras de flores (flower carpets).

Each change cycle (six weeks) the zone leaders assemble from throughout the mission at the Santa Patricia chapel in Lima. This time, after our meeting we went to lunch at Yeyas, a nice hotel/restaurant about half way between the temple and the MTC.

We have lots of pictures of our current area of Lima, the upper-middle-class area called La Molina. But it's not the real Lima. The real Lima is where most of the people live--in humble homes with humble surroundings. Manchay is such an area of Lima.

Lima Peru Temple

The LDS temple in Lima, Peru. This temple was announced in 1981 and dedicated by Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley, counselor in the First Presidency, on January 10, 1986. The temple is actually located in our mission, the Peru Lima East Mission (la Misión Perú Lima Este), where we are serving as couple missionaries.
