14 Aug 1962, Mont Blanc, Haute-Savoie, France --- Mt. Blanc, Haute-Savoie, France: French and Italian workers joyfully welcome one another after the final blast-through of a tunnel under Mt. Blanc between France and Italy, August 14. The tunnel, which runs one-and-a-half miles under Europe's highest mountain, will require a year's work before it will be opened to four-lane motor traffic. With two lanes in each direction, the tunnel is expected to shave off 175 miles from the Paris-Milan route. August 14, 1962 --- Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS
