Mar 06 - CBD Red Zone

Still much deconstruction in the CBD cordon area. All the easy buildings are gone & it's now mostly the larger reinforced concrete buildings that are either too difficult or too costly to repair & bring up to the new earthquake building code. A number of heratige facades have been given substantial support with the plan to incorporate this facade into a new building.

The changing Christchurch skyline

The Christchurch skyline is changing with the demolition of tall buildings. The demolition of the Hotel Grand Chancellor has had the biggest impact on the skyline from September 2011 to February 2012.

2012, Feb 21 - flying over CHCH

On February 21 2012 Moira, Nick & Ross flew over the red zones of the city. Included are some photos of the western areas as we flew from the airport. We included Lyttelton as that was close the the hill suburbs of Mt Plesant, Redcliffs & Sumner. Here is a selection of them that Ross took. Photos from the others later.

Lyttelton & Rapaki

The National Library of New Zealand has commissioned me to contribute photos to the heritage record of the recovery process in Christchurch. These images of Lyttelton and Rapaki start just after the September 4th 2010 earthquake and continue to show the damage and recovery process after the February 22nd & June 13th 2011 earthquakes. There were a huge number of brick buildings in Lyttelton which are being demolished. The epicentres of the second & third earthquakes were so close to here that the damage was severe in both. These photos will in time be permanently available from the National Library's Digital Heritage Archive (NDHA).

2011 December - Aerial views of the Christchurch CBD

This album of aerial photographs, focussing on the central city was taken on 13th December, 2011. The pace of demolition activity has stepped up a lot, with many demolition crews working across the city. The result is evident in the increased number of bare earth sites visible.

The Horseshoe Lake area of Burwood is all red zoned meaning that the land is no longer considered suitable for sustaining buildings.

2011 December - Aerial views of Christchurch.

On December 13 Moira & I flew in a helicopter to capture aerial views of the city. The doors of the helicopter were removed so we could get un-interrupted views. We concentrated mainly on the central city & the eastern suburbs that have been so badly affected by the earthquakes. About 6000 of the homes are to be demolished because of structural damage or un-economic land damage. A very big thank you to those people who generously donated funds to facilitate this flight. - Ross

Jul 19 - inside the Hotel Grand Chancellor

On July 19th, Ross accompanied CERA & Fletchers engineers to examine the innards of the hotel. Here's a small sample of what we found. These images help us to understand why the HGC must come down, why it has a drop zone around it and the caution that will be exercised during the deconstruction.

2011 - Port Hills suburbs

The National Library of New Zealand has commissioned me to contribute photos to the heritage record of the recovery process in Christchurch. The epicentres of the second & third large earthquakes were so close to the city, and particularly to the Port Hills suburbs that the damage was severe in both. This album includes the suburbs of Sumner, Redcliffs, Mt Pleasant, Richmond Hill and Taylors Mistake. These photos will in time be permanently available from the National Library's Digital Heritage Archive (NDHA).

Christchurch July 18 - CBD red zone

I came down to CHCH & spent all day in the CBD red zone. Huge activity with diggers attacking buildings everywhere & big trucks carting away the spoils of destruction. A massive crane was being assembled in Cashel Street to enable the Hotel Grand Chancellor's de-construction. One of the men told me it would be the highest crane in NZ. Many thanks to the National Library of NZ & CERA for their support for this project to record in photos the effect of the Christchurch earthquakes & the recovery from them.

Christchurch - July 7, Diggers & demolition in the CBD red zone.

The pace of demolition in the CBD red zone has really picked up, almost to feaver pitch with huge diggers & trucks everwhere. Thanks to the National Library of NZ & CERA for supporting this project to record the effect of the earthquakes in Christchurch & its recovery.

Christchurch June 15 - CBD Red Zone

The 2 large earthquakes on June 13th caused significant further damage to a fragile CBD. Many buildings that appeared sound were now clearly in a precarious situation. Here is a selection of images taken 2 days later before any cleanup work was carried out so you can see exactly how the debris fell. Again thanks to the National Library of New Zealand for the commission to undertake this project and to CERA for allowing access to the CBD and providing me with safety escorts.

Christchurch - The impact of June 13 aftershocks

This album shows a few of the changes within the Red Zone and surrounding streets that occurred after the latest large aftershocks on June13 (R5.6 & R6.3). The after images were taken on a visit to the Red Zone on 15th June 2011. Thanks to CERA and National Library for their support for this project to create a historic record of the impact and recovery from the Christchurch / Canterbury earthquakes.

Return to the Red Zone - street by street.

On May 27th & 30th Ross returned to the Red Zone. The first 769 photos in this album record nearly every building as it looked at that time - both damaged, and intact buildings. Already, this record is historic as the many aftershocks of 13th June have inflicted more damage. As well, I've added the 145 selected photos of the Red Zone from April 27th which are in the album "Into the Christchurch red zone". This completes the street by street photos prior to the aftershocks of June 13th. Thanks to National Library who provide funding for this project and will ingest the photographs into the National Digital Heritage Archive (NDHA) for permanent preservation. Thanks also to the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) for their support while Ross is in the Red Zone.

Return to the Red Zone - May 27+30

As part of an ongoing commission from the National Library of NZ to create a heritage record of the recovery process in Christchurch I returned to the Red Zone on May 27th and 30th. This selection shows many more people active in the red zone, cleaning and clearing up, removing belongings, and repairing damaged infrastructure. Buildings are being emptied and demolished. These photos will in time be permanently available from the National Library's Digital Heritage Archive (NDHA).

2011 April 27 - Into the Christchurch Red Zone.

The National Library of New Zealand has commissioned me to create a heritage record of the recovery process in Christchurch. I was privileged to visit the "Red Zone" accompanied by a USAR member on 27 April 2011. This selection records some of what I saw & photographed. They show why the Christchurch CBD has been off limits. Currently, the number of buildings in the city to be demolished is 241, 82 to be partly demolished & 39 to be made safe. A tribute to the heritage churches of Canterbury

The heritage church buildings of Canterbury have been particularly hard hit by the earthquakes because many of them date back to the founding of the city and are built of stone or brick. This selection of images show how these buildings have changed over the last eight months - what damage was done by the first earthquake in September, how they were protected and how they fared in the February earthquake. Some stories end already with a cleared site which will become more familiar to us.
