I saw this pic from a recent mens fashion show and thought, "Cool pants; I'd wear something like that." Little did I know...
I found this unusual floral fabric in a store on 35th Street. It looked vaguely Japanese. It might even have been meant for a window treatment or upholstery since it was entirely backed with something that looked like stiff stabilizer.
A closer look.
At $1.50 a yard it seemed full of possibilities. I bought four.
Here you can see the texture -- woven cotton perhaps?
I decided to make pants out of it using the same vintage Simplicity pants pattern I used to make my jeans this summer. Here I am ironing my pattern.
I used Simplicity 5048 from 1972, which I bought on Etsy.com. In August I'd made the short-sleeve shirt and jeans. I straightened the legs and added back pockets.
Cutting. I actually cut it perpendicular to the selvage as I liked the way the pattern looked better that way. Since it was all interfaced, I didn't think it mattered.
Gratuitous chihuahua shot #1. This is Freddy.
This is little Willy.
This time around, I took the two inches off the backside by reducing the width of the over-sized back yoke. You can see how much wider it is than an RTW jeans yoke.
Here's the yoke with the alteration.
Here's one of the front pockets. I did some topstitching but not was much as I would on a pair of jeans.
Zipper installed.
I made the pockets out of some black cotton left over from my Little Black Dress. This is the front, "wrong" side up (in case you were wondering).
Trying them on before stitching the outside seams. No waistband yet.
I flat-felled the inside seams and just did a plain straight stitch on the outside seams, which is how I did my other jeans too.
Here are the finished pants with white high tops sneakers and a black leather jacket.
Right pocket. I need to reattach the eye closure by hand so the thread doesn't show through the front waistband.
I was going to add pockets, but I think there's enough going on here already.
Moving into the 70s! Think Sonny Bono.
Where do I go from here?
Wearing my pants on Sunday in Nyack.
