Black Oystercatcher ringing 2013-03-16

Successful expedition to ring (US: band) a chick of (African) Black Oystercatcher, Haematopus moquini, hatched by the "Carlo's Castle" pair. This was part of an ongoing project to monitor breeding success of Black Oystercatchers East and West of Gericke's Point, George District, Western Cape Province, South Africa

Giverny

On Sunday 15 June we visited Giverny, the village where Claude Monet spent the last years of his life. We visited the house where he lived, now a museum, and his garden, where he painted. There we also saw the famous water lily pond, where he painted the huge nymphéa canvasses that now hang in the Musée Marmottan and the Orangerie, in Paris.

Nylsvley July 2008

I visited Nylsvley Nature Reserve, from 11 to 13 July 2008. For mid-winter there was a lot of water and the veld looked good. It's a wonderful place for birds. I recorded 113 bird species in the Reserve. Although my "mik-en-druk" camera is not suitable for bird photography, I include some opportunistic bird pics.

Early Spring in Kersengaarde

Mild weather this Winter resulted in early early blossoms and flowers everywhere. On a stormy weekend, with blustery winds but some periods of blue sky, I walked around Kersengaarde and Appelgaarde and took these pictures, some in our own garden. Birds were very active too and I managed to get some opportunistic shots at maximum zoom. 1 and 2 March 2008.

Hoar Frost in Voorburg

During the week of 17 to 21 December, a high pressure system fed in cold air from the east, and mist and low temperatures combined to cover everything with a layer of hoar frost. This morning dawned with clear skies and I walked around for an hour or so taking these pictures in the immediate vicinity of our home.

We visited Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle) on 7-9 December to visit the Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market) which take place in the squares all around the Dom (cathedral) and the Rathaus (city hall, former palace of Charlemagne).

Flowers in the Tanqua Karoo, I

On 30 August I drove through the Tanqua Karoo National park, from Tanqua Guest House to the P2250 then north topwards Gannaga Pass. There are more arid gravel plains here than further south but everywhere the veld was in flower. Yellow was the dominant colour, but in different places there were different species of yellow flowers.

Flowers in the Tanqua Karoo, Gannaga Pass

The Gannaga Pass is in the Northern Cape Province on road P2250 leading from the Tanqua Karoo National Park (which lies partly in the Western and partly in the Northern Cape Province) over the Roggeveld Mountains to Middelpos. As in the Tanqua Karoo there were flowers in profusion. I went up to the summit only, then returned.

Sani Pass

Rob Guy (Pied Piper Expeditions) took Sophie, Laszlo, Monika and me on a birding trip up the Sani Pass and into Lesotho, looking for the Bearded Vulture (lammergeyer) and endemics such as the Drakensberg Siskin and Drakensberg Rockjumper. We saw them, but they were beyond the capacity of my camera. However, there was p[lenty of spectacular scenery to photograph.

Underberg district, Kwazulu-Natal

On Monday afternoon 26 August Steven Piper (Pied Piper Expeditions) took Sophie, Laszlo, Monika and me for a drive in the Bushman's Neck area south-west of Underberg to look for cranes. We had good views of the Wattled Crane (the rarest crane) and of Secretary Bird. They were too far for me to photograph but we had some fine scenery in the late afternoon.

Deventer Boekenmarkt

The Deventer Book Market takes place every year on the first Sunday in August. It is the biggest book market in Europe. 370 second-hand and antiquarian book dealers put up over 870 stands, stretching over 6 kilometres. This year there were around 120.000 visitors, a bit less than usual because it was hot, around 30 degrees C.

Zwolle on Koninginnedag 2007

We visited Zwolle on 30 April 2007, Koninginnedag, Queen's birthday. We arrived around 10 a.m., with few people around and waiters clearing up the debris of the night before outside their cafes. By the time we left around 2 p.m. the market and shopping streets were crowded and people were streaming into the city through the Sassenpoort.
