Gillette, founded in1897, moved to Ivy avenue in 1811, to Spanish Revival buildings.
Dowling Memorial Hall is named for Michael J. Dowling, a state legislator who lost his hands and feet to frost bite and became an advocate of disabled children. Designed as an educational wing, the building features a beautiful arched entryway and bright interior spaces adorned with whimsical details, including carved tiles from the Monrovian Pottery of Pennsylvania and plaster sculptures by the Brioschi-Minuti Co. of St. Paul. The building, as a whole, is light, spacious and cheerful, quite unlike any hospital or school of recent vintage.
