International Interreligious Conference Faith in Human Rights in The Hague - December 9-10,2008

On December 10th 2008, on the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the Peace Palace, The Hague, the Netherlands, in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, high-ranking religious leaders representing the world religions and spiritual traditions, signed the Statement Faith in Human Rights. Among them was His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope, assistant of the Metropolitan of Belgium, representing His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

Patronal Feast of the Orthodox Parish of Saint Nicholas in Brussels (Schaarbeek) - 6.12.2008 - presided over by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope, assistant of Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium, in concelebration with Archpriest Panagiotis Moschonas, Oikonomos Evangelos Psallas, Skevophylax Zacharias Malliarakis and the Priests Theophile Pelgrims and Ioannis Papageorgiou, as well as with the Deacons Ciprian Popescu and Emmanuel Chrysakis. In the attendance one noticed the presence of Bishop Porphyrios of Neapolis (Bishop of the Church of Cyprus), Archpriest Stavros Triantafyllou (chancellor of the Archdiocese of Belgium) and Oikonomos Dimitrios Stamatakis. Archpriest Stavros Triantafyllou delivered the sermon.

First Global Forum on Leadership for Shared Societies - Rotterdam, November 12-14, 2008

Rotterdam (The Netherlands) - The First Global Forum on Leadership for Shared Societies, under the title “Building a world safe for difference”, took place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, from 12 to 14 November 2008. The meeting was organized by the “Club de Madrid” and the “City of Rotterdam” and gathered high-level and emerging leaders from government, politics, civil society and other decision-shaping institutions in order to try to help reducing identity-based conflict and to build shared futures where diversity is celebrated for the good of all. The only religious leader worldwide who was invited to this important meeting was His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, primus inter pares of the Orthodox Church, who was represented at the meeting by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope, assistant bishop to the Metropolitan of Belgium.

TRANSLATION OF HOLY RELIC OF SAINT BASIL THE GREAT TO BACKNANG (GERMANY) - Translation of the Holy Relic of Saint Basil the Great (carried in the Chapel of the Holy Blood in Bruges) to Backnang, near Stuttgart (Germany) for veneration of hundreds of greek orthodox christians. The Holy relics were brought over by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope (Ecumenical Patriarchate) and Very Reverend Libert Bruneel (dean of the Chapel of the Holy Blood in Bruges). The Holy Relic was brought for veneration to the Orthodox Parish of Saint Basil in Backnang, a parish that desires so much to construct a new church in honour of Saint Basil.

Visit from 120 orthodox pilgrims from Stuttgart in Bruges, who came to venerate the Holy Relic of Saint Basil the Great in the so called Basilica of Saint Basil (under the Chapel of Tthe Holy Blood). On Saturday Ocotber 4 they sung a Paraclisis and on Sunday October 5 they assisted at the Divine Liturgy in the orthodox church of Saint Constantine & Helen in Bruges, presided over by Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope, concelebrating with Archimandrite Maximos Papagiannis, Oikonomos Bernard Peckstadt and Priest Georgios Mouratidis.

The preacher of the day was Archpriest Panagiotis Moschonas, who talked about the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

60th Anniversary of Ukrainian Parish of Boussoit, Belgium (October 19, 2008) - The celebration was presided over by His Grace Bishop Andriy of Krateia (assistant bishop for the Ukrainian Parishes) in concelebration with Rev. Fr. Boris Khajnevskyj, who has served this parish from 1972 to 1982 and now serves in France. Present was His Grace Bishop Ioan of Parnassos (assistant bishop and responsible for the ukranian parishes in Australia). Both bishops belong to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

Present were: His Excellency Metropolitan Athanasios of Achaïa (Church of Greece), orthodox priests members of Diplomatic Corps, Mgr Matthias Schiltz (General Vicar of Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Luxemburg), protestant pastors and many many faithful! The liturgical services were sung by a Byzantine Choir from Greece.

Synaxis of the Primates of the local Orthodox Churches (Phanar, October 9-12, 2008)

A Synaxis of the Primates of the local Orthodox Churches took place in the Phanar in Constantinople, from October 9-12, 2008, on the occasion of the celebration of the Year 2008 as the Year of Saint Paul and under the presidency of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, primus inter pares of the orthodox bishops. Among them who took part at this meeting: Patriarchs Theodoros of Alexandria, Ignatios of Antioch, Theophilos of Jerusalem and Alexis of Moscow, the Archbishops Chrysostomos of Cyprus, Hieronymos of Athens, Anastasios of Albania, Christopher of Prague, Leo of Carelia and all Finland and Stephanos of Tallinn and all Estonia, as well as representatives of the other autochephalous churhces (Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia and Poland). They concelebrated Divine Liturgy under the presidency of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

XVI International Ecumenical Conference in the Holy Monastery of Bose (Sept. 18-21, 2008)

The 16th International Ecumenical Conference on Orthodox Spirituality was held at the Monastery of Bose (Province of Biella, Piedmont, Italy) from Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 September 2008. Organized by the Monastery in cooperation with and under the joint auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Patriarchate of Moscow, the Conference offered an occasion for a fraternal exchange of views and shared reflection on essential topics of spiritual life, where Eastern and Western Christian tradition meets the profound questions that beset modern man.

41st Annual Conference of the International Association of Civil Aviation Chaplain (IACAC) in Nice

The 41st Annual Conference of the International Association of Civil Aviation Chaplain (IACAC) was held in Nice (France) from 22 to 26 September 2008. The conference was hosted by Ichtus, Nice. The venue of the conference was the Park In Hotel near the Airport of Nice. There were over 80 participants. The theme of the conference was “Airport Chaplaincy – building relationships”, since airport chaplains are called to minister to airport employees and most of all to serve God in the ministry of assisting airport passengers. Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope represented the Ecumenical Patriarchate at this important conference.

On the framework of this European Year for Inter-Cultural Dialogue, the EP President and other EU officials have received the visit of His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem. The Patriarch was welcomed by His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium and his 2 assistant bishops, Maximos of Evmenia and Athenagoras of Sinope, and the Chancellor of the Metropolis of Belgium, Archpriest Stavros Triantafyllou. He visited the headquarters of the Metropolis, as well as the Orthodox Cathedral in Brussels.

Holy sites - places for conflict or dialogue (Stiklestad - Trondheim, Norway - 26-28 July 2008). Conference held at the invitation of the "Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights", and the organization "One World in Dialogue" a gathering of religious leaders, academics, politicians and representatives of ngo's took place in Stiklestad and Trondheim (Norway) in order to discuss the issue "Holy sites - places for conflict or dialogue". The aim of this first meeting is to be a first step in a process which can lead to a universally shared 'Code on Holy Sites'. The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew was represented by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope (Belgium) and the Patriarchate of Serbia by His Grace Bishop Teodosije (Abbot of the Decani Monastery). Among the other orthodox present was Prof. Dr. Ivan Zhelev Dimitrov, director of religious affairs of the Bulgarian Council of Ministers. Among the organizers was Rev. Kjell Magne Bondevik, former Prime Minister of Norway.

National Feast of Belgium celebrated in Bruges (July 21, 2008) - Te Deum in the Cathedral of the Saviour in Bruges presided over by Bishop Roger Vangheluwe (roman catholic bishop of Bruges) and in the presence of Princess Astrid and Pince Lorenz, the Governor of Western Flanders and lot's of personalities. Among them: Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope (assistant of Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium) and Oikonomos Bernard Peckstadt (dean of the Orthodox Parish of Bruges). After the celebration followed a reception at the Palace of the Governor in Bruges.

Members Day of the Association or Orthodox Christians in the Netherlands - June 7th, 2008

Asten (June 7th, 2008) – Members Day of the Association of Orthodox Christians Saint Nicholas of Myra at the Holy Monastary of the Mother of God in Asten (Netherlands). Divine Liturgy presided by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope, assistant of Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium, in concelebration with the Priests Matthew Arnold (Asten) and Josef Moes (Eindhoven), in the presence of Deacon Nikolaas Lukassen (Friesland). The Liturgy was sung by the sisters of the Monastery and by IPOK (Orthodox Multi Parish Choir). Some 50 persons from all over the Netherlands attended this meeting. In the afternoon Archpriest Sergey Ovsianikov (Amsterdam) gave a lecture on “Confession and communion” as it was understood in the early Church and how the late Metropolitan Anthony Bloom wanted this tradition to be continued. It means: confession when needed and regular communion.

49ème rassemblement des grecs à Huizingen (May 12, 2008)

Huizingen (Belgique) 12 mai 2008 - Pour sa 49ème édition, le lundi 12 mai, lundi de pentecôte catholique, le rassemblement des grecs et des philhellènes avait comme chaque année une emprunte hellénique au domaine provinciale d'Huizingen dans le Brabant flamand. Organisé par l'Archevêché Orthodoxe de Belgique (Patriarcat Oecuménique), une fois de plus, les communautés hellénique de Belgique mais également du Luxembourg, d'Allemagne, des Pays-Bas et de France se sont données rendez-vous en famille pour célébrer cet évènement de taille qui a rassemblé quelques milliers de grecs et philhellènes. La journée a commencée par la célébration de la Divine Liturgie en plein aire à l'occasion de la fête du Saint Esprit.

Consecration of Bishop-elect Daniel of Pamphilos (Ukranian Parishes in USA)

On Saturday May 10, 2008 His Grace Bishop-elect Daniel of Pamphilos, assistant for the Ukrainian Orthodox Parishes in the USA – Ecumenical Patriarchate, was consecrated bishop in the St. Volodymyr Orthodox Cathedral in Parma. Seven orthodox hierarchs from around the world have arrived to participate in this historical and joyful event. Silver jubilee of consecration to the episcopacy of His Excellency Metropolitan Nicholas of Amissos (May 2, 2008) - On the Friday of Bright Week, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America led seven Hierarchs of the Orthodox Church, including Metropolitans Maximos of Pittsburgh and Isaiah of Denver; Bishop Philotheos of Meloa; Metropolitan Constantine of Irinoupolis, Archbishop Antony of Hierapolis, and Bishop Andrej of Krateia (Ukrainian Parishes); Bishop Thomas of Charleston, Oakland and the Mid-Atlantic (Antiochian Archdiocese); and prominent Roman and Eastern Catholic Hierarchs at the Jubilee for the 25th Anniversary of Ordination to the Episcopacy of His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Amissos, who is the Primate of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese of the USA (of the Ecumenical Patriarchate). The inclusion of Bishop Philotheos in the celebration was particularly meaningful, as Bishop Philotheos was the last remaining Co-Consecrator of Metropolitan Nicholas.
