Wildlights 2011

The last social event of 2011 was the Wildlights event at the Columbus Zoo, sponsored by Cisco. During the month of December, the zoo is lit with holiday cheer, allowing customers to tour the zoo at night. It was a pleasant surprise to see that Santa also made an appearance! Wildlights was a great way to end the quarter before finals week and make a trip off campus with SWE members.

Rock Climbing 11/9/11

Another way to relax with fellow SWE members during the year is to go rock climbing at the Adventure Recreation Center on campus. Rock climbing is included in tuition for all students, and it was a great way to use Ohio State resources in a SWE event. OSU SWE recommends any recreational facilities available to be used for social events.

SWE @ CAR 2011

The last educational and outreach experience of Fall Quarter was the annual SWE at CAR event. Members met at the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) in Columbus, where they then learned about different areas of car maintenance. Some CAR volunteers put the members in small groups, where they learned how to change tires, maintain fluid levels, replace break pads, and jumpstart a car. A few SWE members even worked on their own vehicles. The event was a great opportunity to learn about basic car knowledge and safety in a casual environment. It also had the largest member attendance out of all the outreach and educational events!

Pumpkin Carving

Pumpkin Carving was always a tradition with Ohio State SWE during late October. Members came together this year during the Halloween season to enjoy hot apple cider while carving pumpkins! This event always has a great attendance, and is recommended for any schools looking to have some Halloween spirit in SWE!

Eco Engineering

A returning outreach success, Eco Engineering (an event focused on promoting engineering and energy conservation) was scheduled for the fall rather than spring this year. The event was coordinated with Columbus Girl Scout troops and held in the Ohio Union on campus. The Union was recently built with “LEED” certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), implementing green energy, compostable food containers, and recycled items for use in the construction of the rooms, such as car seatbelts used to make chairs in meeting rooms. The Union was constructed using 25% of recycled material and has an “Optimization of Energy Performance”, according to the LEED certificate. SWE members formed groups with the Girl Scouts to go on a “green” scavenger hunt by finding environmentally friendly aspects of the union. Later in the event, the SWE members talked to the girls in their small groups over lunch about engineering and environmentally friendly practices.

SWE Nationals 2011

Ohio State SWE wanted to thank the Society of Women Engineers for all awards received at the 2011 SWE National Conference. Ohio State was recognized for Professional Development and Membership retention at WE11. Ohio State’s current section president, Sarah Watzman, also received a national scholarship through SWE, which was awarded at the event.

Ohio State vs. Nebraska Tailgate

Our newest social event was an October tailgate at Donatos for the Ohio State versus Nebraska game. The tailgate was a great way to bring the members together at the beginning of the year, not only by sharing common interest in engineering, but also in Ohio State football! With more than 30 members attending, it was a very casual and spirited event, allowing members to come and go throughout the game. Pizza, refreshments, and games were provided.

WiE LEAP and Fall Kick Off

Our first outreach event welcomed incoming freshmen engineers on campus through the Women in Engineering Volleyball Tournament event. Known as WiE LEAP (Women in Engineering Learning Community's Early Arrival Program) the event was a joint effort with Society of Women Engineers, the Women in Engineering Program, and Phi Sigma Rho, the Ohio State engineering sorority, to move freshman women engineers into the dorms before regular move-in day. This gave new students the opportunity to meet upperclassmen women engineers, ask questions about Ohio State engineering, and find out more information about the women engineering related organizations on campus. Arcelor Mittal representatives also attended the event to discuss career opportunities as well as describe their experiences in the engineering programs at their respective university.

SWE ICE Skate

SWE went ice skating at the OSU ice rink for our first social for winter quarter. As you can see in the pictures, everyone had an amazing time! If you missed this social, come to our cookie decorating social in February; you'll have a super SWEet time! :D

SWE 2010 National Conference

SWE's anual National Conference was in Orlando Florida this year. Highlights included: a career fair with hundreds of employers, Michelle's birthday, a banquet, job search help and resume review sessions, winning the SME bowl, free stuff, and (of coarse) having a wonderful time with our SWEsters!
