North Fork Riverfront Cleanup, Third Annual Norfolk, NE, part of the Earth Day celebrations supported by the Chamber's NorthFork Riverfront Redevelopment Project and Green Council, April 21, 2012. Levee area was cleared for potential trail development as well as trash and debris pickup.

2011 Comedy Flotilla Test Run

Comedy Flotilla test run on the North Fork of the Elkhorn River. Volunteers checked out the temporary docks at Benjamin Ave. and 1st St and Braasch Ave.. Tony Stuthman and daughter helped with the test run as well as Mike Hall. Les Mann, Darrel Novacek, and Stan Staub were on hand to help install the temporary docks. Further refinement is necessary on the 18th to lower the entry point at landfall to improve overall balance and to avoid side to side tipping. Two person inflatable kayak provided by Don Novotny, Polaris of Norfolk, along with additional life vest for comedians and other participants. Boy Scout Troop 124 of Norfolk is providing aluminum canoes and Les Mann is providing 4 blue round stock tanks with special paddles for the comedians to use.

2011DowntownHousingStudy

City of Norfolk Housing Authority contracted for a Downtown Norfolk Housing Study which included some grant funding. RDG Planning & Design out of Omaha (did the City's 2000-2001 Comprehensive Plan) is doing the study. They completed a outreach to the community and developed some feasible development sights for multiple living arrangements. They were very excited that the number of units initially designed for the downtown area support the City's housing statistics over a 10 year period where 15% of the homes for Norfolk could be placed in the downtown area which would be approximately 135 units. They have done an excellent job of integrating green space, trails, and connecting the downtown to historic Johnson Park, and the North Fork riverfront. They have provide many different styles of housing units which supports a multi-generational living neighborhood.

2010RiverPointArtsFestivalTreasureHunt

NorthFork Riverfront Development Project sponsored a treasure hunt as part of the 2010 Riverpoint Arts Festival held in Johnson Park on September 25th following the annual Lion's Day Parade. The Treasure Find event was held just west of the City's Johnson Park maintenance building right off Nebraska Avenue. Mateo Sand and Gravel provided the medium with delivery scheduled by Brenda Reeder of Reeder Originals. Kathy and Mark Hall with help from Boy Scout Troop 124 manned the event where different sized bolts were buried in the sand and found by treasure hunters and exchanged for cash. There were three burials for three waves of treasure hunters, most were below 7 years of age but one session was a staggered start for the younger participants getting a early advantage. You found many youngsters not worried about the treasure but the thrill to dig and fill buckets. There were several toss games setup next the treasure hunt to include softball, wiffleball, pail lid, and corn hole toss.

A local resident with extensive trails experience visited and road the Sioux Falls Trail system along their local river. "Notice that they have some trails that run right next to the street (no grass terrace) where there isn't much room for a trail otherwise. Also, it runs right next to a railroad at Falls Park, with just a row of trees between. The trails connect ball parks, dog parks, playgrounds along the river. This river isn't much wider than the North Fork, and isn't as controlled." This situation is very similar to the potential North Fork Greenway as described in the Norfolk Park and Trail Master Plan.

Safety preparation for the Comedy Flotilla, June 19th, 2010, 11 AM. Mark Hall, May 29th, 12:30 PM, walked and sometimes floated down the North Fork of the Elkhorn River. Investigations proved that approximately 70% of the water depth is 3 feet, about 15% at 4 feet, about 5% at 5 feet, 2.5% at 7 feet, 7.5% at 2.5 feet. The bottom of the river bed is mostly sand with muddy shore line. There was one section Southwest of YMCA where water depth went to 7 feet however there were subsurface obstructions that would be a safety hazard for the unprepared. The water was warm and after about 1 hour felt very comfortable. Hall was able to talk to a property owner across the river behind Kings entertainment complex.

Garrett Fischer, Fischer Tree Service volunteer his time and equipment to clear dead limbs and prune limbs from large tree below the Mill Dam spillway. He returned the next day to help remove trees as part of the Norfolk Riverfront Cleanup, Earth Day 2010.

FundCampaignKickOff

The official NorthFork Riverwalk Development Project funding campaigan kick-off was held on April 23rd, 2009 to train the solicitors and motivate them to make it happen. Over 20 volunteers have accepted the challenge of raising $300,000 to help defray the cost of the contract to complete the Master Plan as well a some administrative costs, and providing a matching grant pool of monies. Jim Miller gave an opening charge to the volunteers (video on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJNgF3JyZH4), introduction of Darrel Novacek, the campaign chair, educational guidance on making the calls by Joe Ferguson and Ron Stauffer.

VisioningSessions

NorthFork Riverwalk Visioning Sessions held on April 16th, 2009, facilitated by HDR Engineering Inc., James Moore the primary moderator, with two sessions held from, 11 AM to 2 PM and 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Each session had 44 individuals attend and participate. Besides a short background on how we got here, there was a presentation on results of the Interview Sessions held in early February, an initial economic analysis on growth projections in housing, retail, and office buildings, a case study of six other communities and then the Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis, and concluding with a mapping excercise.

A great hang-out location, noted by Johnny Carson and many others. old photos of Black Bridge near the Cowboy Trail. Johnny Carson liked to come here, especially by himself. Kids would see how long they could hang from the bridge while trains passed over it. (See film Johnny Comes Home)

From North of Norfolk Country Club to Omaha Ave near the new Nucor Detailing Center with an expanded tour of TaHaZouka Park, Cowboy Trailhead, Southwest Norfolk along HWY 275 Bypass , 49th Street and West Benjamin Ave. Walking tours included City Trail from Benjamin Ave to Kings Entertainment Complex as well as a short walk on the Cowboy Trail.

North Fork Logo Contest

This is a complete listing of all the logos submitted to the logo selection committee of the NorthFork Riverwalk Development Project. From this list the group was down selected to approximately 15 logos and then down selected again to 5 logos representing 3 professional artists from the local area. The selection committee was looking for a simple/clean yet distinctive logo that could be used on a variety of media from print, banners, letterhead, to even a billboard.

2008 1st Annual Norfolk Media Stock Tank Regatta and Race. Held to commemorate the signing of the NorthFork Riverwalk Development Project Contract with Master Plan Development engineering and architecture firm HDR. Stock tank portage was at the north side of the Benjamin Ave bridge across the street from Burger King and just west of the spill way at 1st Street. Majority of the images were taken by Les Mann, Norfolk Daily News with Mark Hall's D50 Nikon camera.

Buildings reflect the railroad industry that was very important at the turn of the century and the agricultural activities that are still important. The community is taking advantage of the access to local waterways to enhance their college and downtown community.
