Trying on a Kimono

Yuriko's daughter-in-law was kind enough to lend her kimono for the event. Yuriko's friend/kimono teacher came over for the afternoon to help dress me, and man was it hard work! She was sweating half-way into the dressing, which must have taken at least 20 minutes and probably 6 of Yuriko's dish towels. Apparently, it's not good to have a large difference in the widths of your waist and hips as it distorts the fall of the kimono, so most young women must be padded.

Kyoto in Autumn, Day 1

We arrived in Kyoto at 6 am, and nothing was open. We weren't due to drop off our stuff at our hostel until 8, so we figured we'd go check out a shrine that was open. On our first day, we went to Fushimi-Inari, Ryoan-ji, Kinkaku-ji, and other shrines. We finished the day with dinner and sake at our favorite bar/restaurant in Kyoto, Manmaru, where the Mama-san and daughter (Judi) took great care of us.

On our night-bus to Kyoto. We left Kofu at 10:20 pm, got into our little seats (pillows, blankets, and slippers provided), and arrived in Kyoto at 6 am the next morning.
