Living History with Turrill 5th graders

Fifth grade students at Turrill Elementary put on a Living History show May 25. Some students inlcuded a bit of historical recreation as they dressed the part of their favorite figure from history. Featured notable figures included Amelia Earhart, Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington, Pocahontas, Teddy Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Laura Engalls Wilder, Dwight Eisenhower, Mamie Eisenhower, Paul Revere, Thomas Edison, Samuel deChamplain, John F. Lynch 1st graders in concert

First graders at Lynch Elementary took to the stage on May 25 to show off their vocal music skills. The students had been working throughout the year for the performance with the help of their teachers Kathy Rulman, Deanne Schlusler and music teacher Carol Young. The closing number featured the performers hand-signing the lyrics to the song "Skidamarink."

Rolland-Warner students check their hives

Rolland-Warner students got a chance May 20 to check on the status of their bee hives, situated behind the school. Students donned beekeeping suits and headed out to the hives for an up-close look at the progress of the two hives. Only one of the hives has been populated with bees, which appear to be thriving. The hive will have produced some honey for harvest later this summer. The project began after a chance discovery during a walk in the woods last fall when Mike Wiltse’s special education class came across a bee hive in a large fallen down oak tree. Lori Bireta's outdoor education class, along with Wiltse’s students, adopted the project to try to keep the bees alive through the winter.

R-W students build a barn

Using a quarter-size replica of a 19th Century American Midwest timber frame barn, the Michigan Barn Preservation Network visited Rolland-Warner Middle School May 20 to give 6th and 7th grade students a chance to "raise" a barn.The afternoon event introduced students to part of our agricultural heritage, the pride of craftsmanship and offered a glimpse at what can happen when people come together to accomplish something that they cannot do alone. R-W Teacher Mike Wiltse was joined by Michigan Barn Preservation volunteers Melissa Jaskiewicz, Ben Lewis and Jen Kramer.

Turrill Student Council donates to Animal Shelter

About a dozen members of the Turrill Elementary Student Council did a little shopping May 18 for provisions they donated to the Lapeer County Animal Shelter. The students selected the Animal Shelter as the beneficiary of its community service project this year. Armed with $96, the students first made a stop at Pet Supplies Plus to buy dog and cat food, kitty litter and a few toys for their new furry friends. Then it was off to the Animal Shelter to drop off their donations and take a tour of the facility. Student Council members got a chance to meet some of the dogs and cats that are housed at the shelter. Students got some help from parent volunteers and 5th grade teachers Phyllis VanHorn and Cheryl Roy.

Maple Grove students turn trash into art

Students at Maple Grove Elementary School turned trash into treasure and put it on display at their Recycled Art Show on Tuesday (May 17). Friends and family members to stopped by to see the art work, all of which was made from recycled items.Hanging above the whole Recycled Art Show was a large chandelier made entirely from melted and painted plastic bottles, complete with functional lights. The recycled chandelier will be a permanent fixture in the school.

Mayfield run 4 play

Mayfield Elementary held its first 'run-4-play' fundraiser on May12 and 13. Students in all grades ran laps outside on the school playing fields to raise money for new playground equipment. The PTC goal is to raise $20,000 for the project. Students ran the course backed by a flat doantion, or by earning money for each lap completed. In these photos, fourth grade students completed their laps on Friday morning, cheered on by a group of enthusiastic supporters.

Schickler students meet the challenge of Disability Day

Students at Schickler Elementary took part in the school’s first Disability Awareness Day. There were three main stations: Hearing/Vision, Learning/Speech, and Gross Motor/Fine Motor. The students were given the opportunity to see what it is like to have one of these impairments (i.e. put on goggles simulating a severe vision impairment, maneuver through a course with a wheelchair, etc.). Teachers said this was an awesome day! Students really enjoyed each station. Some of the students’ thoughts included: "It really helped people see what it is like." "Some people make fun of others, this really helped." (This came from a girl who has a brother in a wheelchair.) "It was fun." "It was kind of sad." "It was hard. Imagine someone who really has to deal with that every day." "It was weird using the gloves with cotton in them to see how hard it is to do everyday things."

Turrill Elementary students explore at Skinner Lake

Third and Fourth Grade students of Nichole Hayden at Turrill Elementary studied boilogy up close and personal on the shores of Skinner Lake on May 11th. The students carefully combed the shoreline looking for a variety of species they could identify. Tadpoles, fish and insects were netted and studied in the outdoor classroom. The District-operated 80-acre R. Michael Supernault Outdoor Education Center at Skinner Lake is used as an outdoor classroom primarily for Lapeer Community Schools elementary and middle school students to study ecology, biology and the environment,

Lapeer Alumni Association May 2011 luncheon

More than 100 Lapeer High School alumni gathered at the Michigan National Guard Armory in Lapeer on May 10 for the group's bi-monthly meeting. The alumni luncheons help raise funds for the group's annual scholarship program and offers a chance for the grads to catch up with longtime friends. The next three meetings of the Lapeer High School Alumni Association are set for July 12, September 13 and November 8 at the Lapeer Elks, 200 E. Nepessing, Lapeer. LINKS program at West

A group of 16 Lapeer West students celebrated the successful completion of the school's LINKS program for this year. The program links students with autism spectrum disorders with other students at school. The May 6 luncheon followed a morning bowling outing for the students. The innovative program is run by school social worke Michelle Etson and biology teacher Mark Nowak.

TAG students work to complete their movies

About 100 Talented and Gifted students from across the District spent the day May 5 in the Media Center and computer lab at Rolland-Warner to work on post-production and editing of the movie projects they have been crafting throughout the school year. The students' films will go public beginning at 6 p.m. on May 25 at a "red carpet" screening at Rolland-Warner Middle School.

Lapeer East ecology students assess river health

Lapeer East High School ecology students of Cheryl Butterfield spent the afternoon May 4 doing a bit of research at Hunters Creek, about a quarter mile north of the school. They waded the river and collected both water and species samples for further study. Some of the data will be used by Susanne Lossing and the Flint River Watershed Council to assess the health of the river.

Zemmer YA Cafe opens

More than 50 Zemmer students came to school a little early on April 28 to open the middle school's new YA Cafe. The Media Center lights were dimmed and a little guitar music set the mood as language arts teachers served up donuts and hot cocoa to the students. The before-school gathering featured an enthusiastic review by science teacher Patrick Lothrop of "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman. The monthly presentation is sponsored by the PTC and is designed to encourage reading by young adults. A dozen students got a chance to borrow a copy of the book, and one lucky student won a free copy of the book.

Lynch 2nd graders celebrate Earth Day in song

Lynch Elementary second graders celebrated Earth Day with a rousing presentation of song, with a little dancing thrown in for good measure. The message to save the planet was clear, with an added strong pitch for recycling. Under the direction of music teacher Carol Young, the second graders performed for other Lynch students on Wednesday, April 27, and for family and freinds on Thursday, April 28.

Lynch students visit Suncrest

A group of Lynch Elementary 4th graders paid a visit to their riends at the Lapeer County Medical Care Facility - Suncrest April 21. The students brought art work to give to the Suncrest residents, and spent time during the morning visit playing games, reading stories and just chatting with the residents. The visit was the second this year for the students of Mrs. Jamison.

R-W Ya Cafe

59 students, 5 parent volunteers, and about 10 staff members showed up at 8:00 am for our first-ever YA Café at Rolland-Warner Middle School. 7th grade Social Studies teacher, Mr. Sweeney talked about the book Red Scarf Girl as students ate donuts and drank hot cocoa. One lucky winner, 6th grader Courtnee Miller, won a copy of the book. Students were able to check out copies of the book donated by the Rolland-Warner PTC immediately after the book talk. Rolland-Warner is using the YA Café concept as an initiative to promote literacy for all. The next Rolland-Warner YA Café is planned for Friday, May 13th, at 8:00 am in the media center. The featured title will be The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. The PTC sponsored this YA Café and has agreed to donate the books and refreshments for the events in May and next September.

Murphy hosts children's author

Kevin Kammeraad, author and illustrator of “The Tomato Collection,” “I Remember …” and "A Curious Glimpse of Michigan” wove a little poetry, music and puppetry into his presentation April 13 at Murphy Elementary. Kevin entertained the students with his dynamic, interactive show filled with Michigan’s state symbols, fun facts, interesting history, and more – all presented through poetry, music, puppetry, and fun.

Seaton students Race into Reading

March was reading month, and during the course of the month the Seaton Racers watched their reading speedometer tip past their 54,000-minute goal and top out at 99,232 minutes. That’s 45,232 minutes over the school goal! To top it all off, they all made their way into the winner’s circle during our NASCAR-Themed Center Day. With amazing volunteers as Team Coaches, students raced through a day of learning, teamwork and fun activities. A big thanks goes to the Seaton Racers, who put forth their best reading effort.

Michigan Chillers essay winner

Seaton Elementary 4th grader Morgan Pierce will get a chance to attend a special summer writing camp in August hosted by author Jonathan Rand, writer of the popular Michigan Chillers mysteries for young readers. Morgan wrote a 100-word essay to be selected for Rand's Author's Quest Writing Camp. She was accepted and will be attending the camp from August 11-14. She will stay with other writers for three nights and four days and share her writing and learn new techniques to improve her already wonderful stories. In her essay, she expressed a desire to learn more about similes and metaphors, which will help her improve her word choice. Morgan says she is extremely excited to be given this opportunity. She is looking forward about meeting the special guest and the attending the workshop.

Rolland-Warner Fine Arts Night

Rolland-Warner Middle School hosted its annual Fine Arts Night on March 29. Students offered an evening of band performances, theater performances, art displays and working artists. Continuing a six-year tradition that began at Zemmer Junior High, and now at Rolland-Warner Middle School, students also hosted the Empty Bowls community service event. Attendees were asked to make a donation of at least $5 for a meal of hot soup served up in bowls created by Rolland-Warner art students. Donations went to the soup kitchen at the First Presbyterian Church in Lapeer.

Kindergarten Roundup 2011

Members of the high school class of 2024 showed up on March 22 and 24 to register for kindergarten at Lapeer Community Schools.The students-to-be numbered 240 and were treated to cookies, crayons and balloons, and a chance to take a short bus ride as their parents filled out the paperwork to register them for classes. The Lapeer District Library and the Girl Scouts also offered information to the parents of the new students.

Students receive recognition at our monthly assembly with a certificate and also have their writing piece hung in the hallway outside the office. West athletes give back

More than 130 athletes from Lapeer West High School spent the morning of February 28 reading to elementary students and helping out at the Lapeer County Medical Care Facility -- Suncrest as part of a community service effort by the high school students. Students were on hand to help out at all elementary schools in the Lapeer Community Schools, including Lynch, Maple Grove, Mayfield, Murphy, Schickler, Seaton and Turrill.

The theme this year is “Lights, Camera, Action!” for more than 50 talented and gifted students in 2nd through fifth grades in Lapeer Community Schools. The group gathered for its second outing of the year in the Media Center at Zemmer Middle School in late February for a day of movie-making.

Rolland-Warner 7th graders celebrate Chinese New Year

It's the Year of the Golden Rabbit in China, and Rolland-Warner 7th graders celebrated the begining of the Chinese year 4708 on Feb. 11 (delayed because of a snow day on Feb. 3 when the new year began). Rabbit is a lucky sign. Chinese tradition says the Rabbit brings a year in which you can catch your breath and calm your nerves. To gain the greatest benefits from this time, make it a goal to create a safe, peaceful lifestyle, so you will be able to calmly deal with any problem that may arise. Students made masks and then took part in a dragon dance that filled the hallway and snaked through the media center and office before returning to the classroom. The celebration was part of the 7th grade study of the Eastern Hemisphere and in particular the study of China.

Zemmer Tropical Snowstorm Dance

To chase away a bit of the winter blahs, Zemmer Middle School hosted a "Tropical Snowstorm" dance February 10. Highlights include students and Mr. Olson playing Rock Band, students playing ping-pong, teachers and students playing Let's Dance on the Wii, students playing basketball in the gym, face painting, students just hanging out, and students dancing in the cafetorium. Anoher highlight was Mr. Shoopman dancing to "Thriller."

Using a broad mix of basketball stunts, humor and common sense, speaker Jim “Basketball” Jones kept the crowd “in the game” February 9 as he visited Seaton Elementary with his motivational message. His focus for the 1st through 5th grade students was on character, putting forth your best effort, teamwork and listening.

East art students create art for the Memory Project

The Memory Project is a unique initiative in which art students create portraits (drawings, paintings, graphic design, etc) for children and teens from around the world who have been orphaned, neglected, or disadvantaged. The artists receive photos of kids waiting for portraits and then create the portraits. Memory Project volunteers deliver the portraits to the kids as special gifts. The goal of the project is to inspire caring, global friendship, and a positive sense of self.

Rolland-Warner students are feeding the bees

A chance discovery during a walk in the woods has turned into a biology project for students at Rolland-Warner Middle School. Mike Wiltse’s special education class came across a bee hive in a large fallen down oak tree last fall on student walks “out back.” Lori Bireta's outdoor education class, along with Wiltse’s students, have adopted the project of trying to keep the bees alive this winter.

Troubadoors at Lynch Elementary

Lynch Elementary students got a pre-holiday treat on Tuesday, December 21, as the Flint-based Troubadours paid a visit to the school. The musical tour included a string quartet and storyteller from the Flint Institute of Music who offered up a fun, music-filled half hour “in the round” in the school cafeteria. With their lively tunes and banter, the Troubadours wove in lessons about geography, writing and social studies in their program: The Places You Can Go: Adventures in Music. Throughout the program students were transported to different countries, learning about the customs and music of other cultures.

Transportation Department Holiday

The Transportation Department celebrated the holidays with its annual holiday luncheon December 20 at the bus garage on Calhoun Street. Employees gathered together gifts for a Holiday Depot family and bid farewell to retiring Transportation Director Jerry Podzikowski, who has worked for the District for seven years. The new director is Gail Finley, who comes to the District from Royal Oak with more than 20 years of experience in transportation.

Rolland-Warner Student Council volunteers at Soup Kitchen

About 30 members of the Rolland-Warner Student Council are volunteering at the Soup Kitchen at St. Paul Lutheran Church. The crew is working December 10 and 17th and again on January 7th to help out with the meal that's served to needy and homeless people in the Lapeer area. The students also got to use their sorting skills to help organize canned goods, and when the meal was over, they did the dishes. The Soup Kitchen rotates each weekday between five local churches.

West hosts Blood Drive

Lapeer West High School students rolled up their sleeves last week to give the gift of life in the school’s semi-annual Blood Drive. The West Student Council hosted the American Red Cross Bloodmobile on Friday, December 3, and 52 students signed up to give blood, surpassing the goal for the day. By the end of the day the Genesee-Lapeer Chapter of the American Red Cross had collected 36 pints of blood.

Maple Grove Writers Workshop

The focus has been on creativity over the last several weeks as 45 students have stayed “after class” for Maple Grove Elementary School’s first Writing Workshop. The PTA-funded program gives students a look at many aspects of the writing experience. The 1st through 5th grade students got a chance to drop in to a number of writing stations, to explore Poetry, Story Line, Characters, Setting, Brainstorming and Words.

Alumni Lunch 11-9-10

The Lapeer High School Alumni Association gathered for its semi-monthly luncheon at the Lapeer Elks on November 9. The pre-holiday luncheon gathered gifts and cash for the Lapeer Holiday Depot. The alumni contributed $118 in cash along with three large boxes of gifts and large tote full of games. One of the most notable donations was 35 sets of hats, scarves and gloves that were made by alumni member Jeannette Sawgle Jackson.
