THE MEETING: Hey, our new president, Carol Curcio, is doing a terrific job. We had a fantastic six-projector musical and slide presentation by photographer and former Forest Ranger Jim Long on Yosemite entitled, "The Range of Light". It was spectacular and breathtaking photography, fading one season into another, dawn into evening, and other gorgeous scenery accompanied by Grieg and other composers' dramatic music.
Velma West, the club's Design Awareness Chairman, described the two-sided, but completely separate floral designs.
The designs were on a lazy-Susan type container. Here's one side of the design.
And here's the other side of the design.
Horticulture Chairman Linda Miller told us all about some interesting drought-tolerant plants which are now the rage due to the cut back on watering.
Prapa announced at the meeting that the Out and About Gang will be going to see a 1500-year-old oak tree on the Luiseno Tribe's reservation in the Temecula area. The trip will include a visit to three Rainbow nurseries and lunch at Pechanga Casino.
The Tea Table ladies gave us a wonderful assortment of refreshments, including pumpkin pie. Left to right are Connie, Jo, Helen, Jan, Nancy, Shirley, Joanne and Tea Table Chairman, Jean Hosely.
THE OUT AND ABOUT TRIP: Prapa led us to three wholesale nurseries which we greedily took advantage of.
This was a fun, outspoken group which gave this nurseryman a big smile and made his day.
Photo by Dottie Rayhawk or our tour guide Raymond. Only a partial view of the 1500-year-old-tree that we saw .
GREENHOUSE PROPAGATION AT THE MARTIN GANG RANCH: Joan Royal planted several pots of cactus from plants that a member brought to the Martin Gang Ranch to share.
Tammy Granados separated a clump of plants into several smaller starter plants.
Nancy Maynard identified succulents and cactus, also writing a date down on the plastic nametag if the plant needs to develop roots.
Joanne Berry is in charge of the succulents and cacti area. These plants have become much more in demand now that we have a severe water shortage problem.
Tammy and Joanne showed new member Karen how to propagate the plant and how they dip each cutting into Rootone before potting it.
The club is big on identifying plants and sharing planting info with customers at our plant sales and how to care for the plants. Vickie Akiike is one of the club's super gardeners and a great source on plant identification, but occasionally she has to look one up.
Datie Gahran finished placing the plants in pots, placed nametags in them and took them to the area where similar plants are found.
Glenda Johnson, co-chairman of Greenhouse Propagation, is entering the barn looking to fill the wheelbarrow up with more plants.
Dana Behymer, busy as a bee usually, takes a short break. Coffee and sweets are provided for all the volunteer workers.
New member Karen seemed to enjoy her morning at the Martin Gang Ranch. It's a great way for new members to get acquainted with everybody.
Joanne Berry and Nancy Maynard placed the cactus and succulents so they will look appealing to customers coming to the Saturday, November 14 plant sale at the Martin Gang Rarnch.
Half the fun is hitting the books to identify strange and unfamiliar plants. Nancy Maynard and Shirley Skinner, who know tons of plant names, actually sometimes get stumped
THE SUNDOWNER AT ADAMS PARK: What a delightful late afternoon and early evening. Perfect weather. Great eats. Wonderful friends. At this table, we have Martha Taylor, Nancy Maynard, Bobbie and El Workman, and Joan Royal.
Julie Ramey, Kathleen Joyce, and Evie Kent.
Ron "Doc" Wheeler and Fay Hubbard
Phyllis and Dale Waters, Roger Ramey, John Hubbard, Bob Kent and Carol Curcio.
Greg Maynard, Ed Patten and Joan Patten
Evelyn Mertz
Dolores Johnson and Prapa Taylor
Joan Patten, Evelyn Mertz, June Bernesser and Doc Wheeler. Bunch of happy people. That's all I gotta say.
Joan Smith took this photo of Joan Patten at the Palomar District Fall Meeting held at the Windmill Restaurant in Carlsbad. The theme for the day was "Hats off to Halloween". Hence, Joan in her hat. Suspect she made that design also.
