2013 Challenge Bloworth to Lion Inn 17 May

Our Wainwright Society Challenge walk for the C2C challenge was Bloworth Crossing to the Lion Inn, Blakey. We chose this as we'd walked it in minimum visibility when we did the C2C on 2009, have included a couple of photos for comparison. Having picked a clear day we started the walk from Carlton Bank rather than Clay Bank top - the nearest road access to Bloworth.

We've been to Tasmania before but never made it to Hobart or the Freycinet Peninsula so, apart from a return to Cradle Mountain (a day trip last time), it was all new for us.

N Island New Zealand Feb 2013

We visited New Zealand a few years ago and, because of a muddle over dates, were unable to do the Cape Reinga, 90 mile Beach trip. Having got as far as Australia I convinced Kevin that we'd never have a better chance to do it so we headed to Auckland for a week at the top of North Island.

Countess of Wessex at Calvert Trust 15 November

Report in the local paper that morning: She will officially open The Lake District Calvert Trust’s new centre at Little Crosthwaite, near Keswick, before travelling to Carlisle to open a resource centre for the disabled. The water centre was the hub of a £3.7m appeal to transform the facilities for disabled people. They also included a sensory room and an outreach scheme. Robin Burgess, chairman of the trustees at the Lake District Calvert Trust, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming the Countess of Wessex to officially open the centre piece of our recent appeal and see that the trust has world-beating facilities allowing disabled people to enjoy the Lake District.”

I have been doing every Wainwright as the first AW on a walk, direct ascent not strictly accurate, some have been rather roundabout! Fairfield was the final one, we then continued on to St Sunday Crag as this had been our final fell on first doing the 214. Our route was from Deepdale Bridge via Greenhow End

May 9 - 16 West Highland Way

A seven day walk of the WHW in May. Weather was not at its best, first day one heavy shower while walking, and another when we were in a cafe at the end of the day's walk. Next five days a real mixture of rain, cloud (not too low) and the occasional bit of sunshine - cagools on and off like yo-yos! The last day a bit drizzly all day and cloud much lower. Nevertheless we really enjoyed the walk, especially the bit across Rannoch Moor.

After the Rockies we drove the scenic route to Vancouver via Whistler. Then had a week's cruise up the coast of SE Alaska, flew back to Vancouver and took the ferry to Vancouver Island for a few days.

Members of the Wainwright Society met for a walk up Thornthwaite Crag from Troutbeck via Scot Rake. We had hope to walk back over the Ill Bell Ridge, looked so inviting on our way up but, as you can see from the photos, the weather made us settle for a direct return.

Cross Fell July 12

Cross Fell, as the highest point in England, had been on our 'to do' list for ages. Not the most photogenic of walks, excellent views west to the lakes, but distance and haze ruled out photos. Plenty of interest, especially by including the golf ball on Great Dun Fell. High cloud, no rain but quite windy across the tops.

A celebration of AW's first visit to the Lake District on 7 June 1930. The Wainwright Society, with members dressing in 1930s fashion, recreated his bus journey from Blackburn, with the oldest buses available, to Windermere and then his walk up Orrest Head.

BotR H28 Wild Boar Fell and Swarth Fell May 10 2010

I chose this walk for the challenge as AW says "more than any other in the book, this expedition savours of real mountaineering, the ramparts forming an excellent parade." It was an interesting walk the stretch along the top of the escarpment from The Nab to the cairns being the highlight. Was very overcast and we even had a light snow shower on the summit!

This was Kevin's walk for the challenge. Whernside has been on our to do list for a long time having previously done Ingleborough and Pennyghent. Chose this route as AW described it as "foolproof in any weather because of the accompanying unbroken wall"

BotR LC2 Caves and Potholes of Leck Fell May 9, 2010

This was an unclaimed walk in the Wainwrith Society's Best of the Rest Challenge. As I was driving from the Lakes to Nelson that day, through Cowan Bridge AW's start of the walk, (I drove 1/2mile to Leck to park) I volunteered to do it. Was very overcast but dry. Having found the first cave named by AW there was no problem finding the rest. An interesting walk back through Easegill Kirk and beside Leck Beck. Don't think pot-holing is for me, think I'll stick to the walking.

Scafell Pike 26 Apr

Chose Scafell Pike as my 1000th Wainwright as it had also been my first. Did the tourist route from Wasdale as Kevin wanted to check it out before doing the 3 peaks later this year. Returned down Piers Gill, one of my favourite routes as the Gill is so dramatic, apologies for all the photos of it. We then stopped for a cuppa at our favourite spot by the 'island' on Wastwater. Not an island on this occasion.

Walked up to Eel Tarn fromthe Woolpack in Eskdale then across to Stony Tarn before bagging 3 more BBs: Dawsonground Crags; Whin Crag and Goat Crag, then dropped down to the path from Slight Side to return to my car in the small car park opposite Wha House.

Whinfell Ridge Apr 8

On Thursday Derek joined us for a walk of the Whinfell Ridge from Low Borrow Bridge on the A685 to Hucks Bridge on the A6 and back down lower Borrowdale. Weather wasn’t great, fairly low cloud all day so not good for photos, but at least it stayed dry.

Knott from Fell Side Apr 7

Took the old mine road from Fell Side to Roughten Gill lead mines then up beside the series of waterfalls in the gill before crossing the very 'marshy heather' and up to summit of Knott. Ridge route to High Pike and back via Potts Gill Mine towards Nether Row before taking the path, then track back to Fell Side.

Wet day forecast for Lakes and we wanted to drive to the east end of the C2C where the weather was much better. Took the chance to visit Whitby, which was lost in haze in the distance when we finished the C2C last year and got some slightly clearer photos of the approach to Robin Hood's Bay.

Easter: Broom Fell Sat. Place Fell Sun.

On Saturday Chris and I tackled the steep route up Graystones from Scawgill Bridge, then on to Broom Fell, his 150th, and through Whinlatter Forest, why do I always get confused in forests? to Whinlatter. Not many photos as very cold, windy and hazy. Sunday Kevin, Robin, Chris and I headed up to Boardale Hause from Patterdale, then when Angle Tarn came into site took the path on the west side to Brock Crags, from there circuited the Tarn on our way to Angletarn Pikes, then made a beeline towards Place Fell, picking up the path a bit above Boardale Hause. Returned the same way. Still very cold wind but much better day than Saturday.

We set off from the A591 outside Grasmere to claim a direct ascent of Heron Pike via Alcock Tarn, which we had not visited for ages. We then continued on to Great Rigg and Fairfield, which seemed like a good idea at the time but the the clag came over and stayed with us as we retraced our steps to Great Rigg and back to Grasmere via Stone Arthur.

Only time for a shortish walk today, but conditions far too good not to get out. Given the hard conditions underfoot thought it a good time to do this ridge and as I needed a direct ascent of High Seat chose to go up Ashness Gill from Ashness Bridge.
