Graceland in Memphis, TN
Elvis Aaron Presley was born January 8, 1935 in Tupulo, MS and died at Graceland on August 16, 1977. Graceland was originally developed as a 500 acre farm during the American Civil War by publisher S.E. Toof and was named after his daughter, Grace. When Elvis bought the house it had just been sold to the YMCA by the Christian Church for $35,000. He convinced the YMCA to sell the house to him for $102,500 so they would make a big profit. He was 22 years old.
He loved to decorate as you will see in the pictures. He also added a trophy room, a racquetball court, a pink Alabama fieldstone wall around the property and the famous wrought iron guitar gates by the pool. Elvis, his parents and his grandmother are burried at Graceland.
In 1971 Elvis received "One of the Ten Oustanding Young Men of the Nation" award from the US Jaycees. This was the only award ceremony he ever attended and he carried the "touching hands" award with him whenever he went on tour.
