St Cuthbert's Day, 20th March 2012
Members of Durham Photographic Society recorded the Northumbrian Association's annual St Cuthbert’s Day Walk from St Mary’s and St Cuthbert’s Church at Chester-le-Street to Durham Cathedral, the route is symbolic of the transfer of the body and the relics of St Cuthbert from Chester-le-Street to Durham in 995AD and formation of the Saxon White Church, a precursor of today’s Norman Cathedral, by the community of St Cuthbert.
This year a new banner to replace the original that was destroyed during the Reformation, was commissioned by the Northumbrian Association and funded by John and Lyn Cuthbert. The replacement created by a team of North-East artisans, was carried from the market place up the Bailey to the Cathedral where it was formally received.
