PEFA Mercy Medical Centre - April 2008
The women in the Malindi District of Kenya come each night to fill their jerry cans full of water from holes dug by the river. Our project will work with these people to provide a community-driven solution for safe water.
Although only 2 medical team members made it through the Icelandic Volcano in April 2010, the medical camp still occurred with some scrambling and pinch hitting courtesy of Kenyan medical providers.
The process of community engagement to discover needs in Burangi involves village members - which for these women is often the first time they've been asked for input on community needs.
These US providers stand on a bluff above the river that floods quarterly, cutting off access for Burangi villagers to get to the outside world. The river floods and fills in a dry creek bed, creating an "island" in the middle of the plains.
PEFA Mercy Medical Centre was the first long term project that Genesis got involved with overseas. Started in 2007, the clinic is indpendently operated by the local church of the Pentecostal Evangelical Fellowship of Africa. The clinic sees upwards of 20,000 patients a year in a rural city on the outskirts of Nairobi. In 2012, Genesis will complete its five year start up funding with PEFA as they are now self sustainable.
We are in proud partnership in Burangi Village with MAP International which takes a Total Health Village approach to solving community health needs.
Genesis World Mission was founded in 2001. Its local program, the Garden City Community Clinic, is a patient centered medical home, focused on the whole person needs of lower income, uninsured people: medical, dental, medications, mental health, spiritual, and coordination of specialty referrals. It also plays host to another medical program during its idle hours, which are not many anymore.
Genesis World Mission has had a long history of involvement and support from BVCC. The church helped seed the funding of the Clinic in 2002 with a $25,000 donation. Steven Reames, Monica Hyde, and Scott Nelson have all been involved in leadership at Genesis. Upwards of 50 volunteers and donors from BVCC are among its past and present supporters.
