Grayson's first 6 weeks

It's been a wonderful first 6 weeks with Grayson, and quite the learning curve! We spent the first 2 weeks in the comfort of Emily's parents' home, before moving back to our place where we were supported by my parents for the next 10 days. Lucky us!! We had planned to make a 1 month album, but my oh my time flies, so here is the 6-week album. Enjoy, and thank you to all of you who have sent well wishes, gifts, emails and cards our way - all very much appreciated!

Wildlife Camera

Last year for Christmas, Geoff's parents got us a Wildlife Camera, which we can attach to a tree and set up to take photos of any animals share the property we live on. It has infrared motion sensors for night-time photos, and the flash (though almost too strong) certainly does the job. We seem to live in a wildlife corridor, which is fantastic! Here are some shots, some better than others, of some of the animals we live around. Enjoy!

Our New Home

Here it is - our little slice of heaven! 5 acres, 10 minutes outside Salmon Arm and perched atop a 745m hill, so lots of snow to come in the winter! We love it and we hope to see you here sometime in the near future:)

Back in Canada - Summer 2008

We were very excited to be back in our home country! As we headed home, we landed in Vancouver, took side trips up to Robert's Creek and out to Abbotsford to see family, then on to Armstrong, in the north end of the beautiful Okanagan Valley. From there we headed back ot Vancouver and East to the Kootenays at the foot of the Rockies. We also loved tending our first garden - a full summer! Enjoy!

South Korea April 2008

Well it's taken over a year, but here are the photos from our one-month stay in South Korea. We lived in Iksan, where we spent 3 years, and worked with Birds Korea and many international volunteer counters to continue the SSMP (Saemangeum Shorebird Monitoring Program), which monitors the effect of the massive 40,000 hectare reclamation on the migrating shorebirds that depended on that area for re-fueling stops on their 4-10,000 km migration up to Siberia and Alaska. We also snuck in some time on an off-shore island and a quick visit with friends. This is our last stop before going home for 'good'!

China: The Last Tour

Our fifth time to this wonderful country, and it is to be our last for many years to come. As such, we mixed seeing places we hadn't seen before with seeing our old friends (and new baby) one more time before we set off for Korea and then home, and to make things interesting Emily got her wisdom tooth pulled in Hong Kong (thanks CnS for the hospitality:). We felt quite nostalgic being back in Xi'an this time around, knowing it was the place our Asian experience all started. Now here we are 4.5 years later . . .

New Zealand - Part 2

After heading north for the Bar-tailed Godwit satellite implanting project, we continued through the northern half of the South Island. We then headed up to the North Island to meet Emily's uncle Dave and aunt Brenda, to travel for 7 days with them. Great time! We loved New Zealand, and would recommend it to anyone:) For now, it's back to China to cover the last missing piece: The Southeast.

Tracking Bar-tailed Godwit Migration

We took a break from traveling around the South Island to join the international team at Miranda Shorebird Center to help them catch Bar-tailed Godwit to implant satellite transmitters into them. These transmitters help the Alaskan scientists track their incredible migration from New Zealand up through China and Korea to Alaska where they breed. In the Fall, they do an amazing feat - they fly non-stop from Alaska to New Zealand, a distance of 11,500 km! This takes them from 7-9 days time with no food, water or sleep. We had a wonderful time learning tons and getting to hold these amazing creatures in our hands. Thanks for including us, Miranda team!

New Zealand - Part I

Time to hit up the country we've heard nothing but great things about - and it has not disappointed yet! Part I takes us through our arrival in Auckland and down to the southern portion of the South Island. Australia - Adelaide

Wow - our time is up already in Australia - where does it go? We had a fantastic time moving Ryley and Murray into their new home and area over the past three weeks. Wine regions were visited, Penguin colonies seen, National parks hiked, cricket watched live and lots of catching up done. We even managed to see Koala and Kangaroo in the wild, which was a real highlight. We're sad to say goodbye to them for another year, but also very excited at what tomorrow brings - a trip to New Zealand!

Australia - Melbourne and Sydney

Before Emily's parents joined us in Oz, we had 5 days to make a quick trip down to Melbourne to take in the sites both in and around the city. We then zipped back to Sydney to meet Ryley and Murray to spend 5 days in that surprising city. In all a fantastic introduction to a country we've come to love. Enjoy!

Southern India

From the North, we hit up Mumbai for a few days, then headed into the rainforests, beaches and wilderness of the Western Ghats, a mountain range that follows the edge of the West coast. We've still got 8 days to go, but here's a glimpse of what we've seen so far . . .

Nepal

We spent a week in Kathmandu, recovering from our bumpy (but beautiful) jeep ride from Lhasa, and preparing mentally for entering India. We ate a lot of good curry and spent a couple of days out bird-watching nearby. Our pictures of Nepal are mostly all bugs and flowers:)

Tibet

After traversing the Taklamakan desert and climbing through the Kunlun mountains, we reached the Tibetan plateau. We spent 6 days in Lhasa, and then 4 days in a Land Cruiser heading via Everest Base Camp into Nepal. Tibet is a fascinating country with lots to see in every way - a thoroughly enjoyable 2 weeks!!

Silk Road (China II)

Our journey from Xi'an following along the Silk Road through the deserts of Western China into Golmud, the gateway to Lhasa and Tibet, 1000 km south of here. Oasis towns of Dunhuang and Turpan, and some astounding scenery from inside our jeeps and buses as we climbed into the northern Tibetan plateau. Enjoy!

This will be part 1 of our travels through China - from Beijing to the Silk Road city of Xi'an. Lots of old friends visited and a little too much food eaten! Great to see everyone again, and looking forward to heading out into the desert wilderness of Western China!

Korea 2006-7

A few pictures of what has been an enjoyable and varied year, our last in South Korea. We did a lot less traveling around, a lot less sightseeing, and spent most weekends at places we love close to home - Daejeon with family, camping areas, and of course out birding. We also felt much more at home, and, as such, didn't take nearly as many pictures as in previous years. Our last rooted home for the forseeable future!! Enjoy:)
