Picture Frames

The Pre K class went on a field trip last fall to the pumpkin patch. Students decorated their picture frames with LINES and SHAPES. Each student shared something special about that day which is written on the bottom of the picture frame.

Prints

The Kindergarten classes learned about ANDY WARHOL and how he printed images of popular things. Each student used sponges dipped in paint to create a print. Students created a pattern decorating each box with LINES and SHAPES. We added beads demonstrating a REAL TEXTURE and getting us ready for our next project.

Mayan Glyphs

The fourth grade team collaborated with Mrs. Strulson to create a cross curricular project integrating their studies of the Mayan people and art. Students learned about Mayan glyphs, practiced sketching the shapes and ultimately selected glyphs that reflected their initials. Students decorated the NEGATIVE SPACE with lines and shapes using pastels.

Shape

The kindergarten classes used squares, rectangles, rhombuses, trapezoids, circles and triangles to create a person. Each person has different characteristics that makes them special from decorative clothing to colorful backgrounds.

Crayfish

The third grade team collaborated with Mrs. Strulson to create a cross curricular art project. Students drew a contour line, added value and identified the different features of their crayfish.

Line Books

The Pre K and K classes learned about different types of LINES. We used our bodies to demonstrate a vertical, diagonal, horizontal and curvy lines. Students also learned how to draw zig zag and doted lines. We learned about the artist Pier Mondrian and identified the different types of lines in his work. Students listened to Ray Charles and created fast lines, slow lines, loud lines and quiet lines. The final step required students to cut a vertical and horizontal line. We hole punched their books and students tied knots to hold their pages together.

Rangoli

The third and fourth graders used different shapes and symmetry to create Rangoli designs. This assignment is part of a larger community project where students collaborated before the first day of school to create a rangoli design in front of Janney School. Rangoli is a tradition from India and used on special occasions to welcome people. We made rangoli designs during the first week of school because it is a special time and students wanted to welcome their parents to back to school night with their designs.

Ms. David's Art Show

Third grade teacher, Nicole David, celebrated her students artwork with an end of the year reception. Students learned about artists such as Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo and Kandinsky.

Greek Amphora

Students in Ms. Miller's 2nd grade class made amphora's. We discussed the historical and cultural significance of Greek vases. Each case told a story which inspired students to communicate a story about themselves in their amphora's. Students were given black, brown and white paper to convey working knowledge of shape, symmetry and movement.

Flowers (K)

The kindergarten classes learned about real and visual texture. We used plastic labyrinths to create visual texture by rubbing crayon over paper. Students drew a contour line of a flower after viewing Georgia O'Keeffe paintings. We used various materials (real texture) and cut shapes to glue on the positive or negative space of the flower.

Grid (4th grade)

The fourth grade learned about artist, Jasper Johns, who did several painting using a grid. Students integrated math skills by measuring and drawing their grids. Each student selected a date that is important to them and created either a random or planned pattern with numbers. Students applied watercolor and pastel using their working knowledge of complementary colors.

Asian Scrolls

The third grade classes learned about Asian scrolls. Hand scrolls are designed to hang horizontally while hanging scrolls are hung vertically. We discussed the use of a sumi brush, indian ink and watercolors. Students observed that nature is a common theme in Asian Art. Each student created their own scroll focusing on the natural world and applying their knowledge of Chinese characters.

DC3 Collaborative Arts Show at Sumner

Ten art teachers from ten schools in the collaborative organized an art exhibit that reflects the visual arts program at their respective schools. Several Janney students were selected to participate in this show. Please take a view minutes to view their work and the artists from the collaborative schools.

3-D Milk Carton Houses

The kindergarten classes discussed the importance of recycling. We collected milk cartons from the cafeteria to make 3-D houses. Students cut paper into various shapes and lines to decorate their houses. We added line and images using pastels. Students made different types of houses including gingerbread houses, haunted houses, their own house and Janney School.

The third graders discussed the importance of trees and ways we express our gratitude for them each day by recycling. Students completed an observational, contour line drawing of a tree taken into consideration the edges of their paper and overlapping the branches. Students learned about uli which is a design system that women painted on their homes and bodies in Nigeria. In either the positive or negative students students added uli designs.

3-D Fish (K)

The kindergarten classes learned about 3 dimmensional objects. Each student created a fish, traced it and cut it out. The students decorated their fish with fins, lines, shapes, tails, eyes and then glued the sides together. We stuffed the fish with recycled paper and learned about the Jewish holiday Tu' Bshvat. After gluing the the fish closed students placed a hole in them and hung them in the classroom. Each student commented on one of the fish. Beads

Ms. Miller's 2nd grade class made beads. Each student learned how to make a ball by rolling the clay in their palms, pressing the ball to cut a shape and pinching the edges. Students decorated their beads with lines and shapes to create patterns. After painting and glazing the beads, students threaded them onto ribbon.

Value-Trees

The 4th grade learned about VALUE, the amount of light and dark in a painting. First students made a value scale demonstrating their knowledge of how to convey all the values between white and black. Students used the tree in the classroom to do an observational painting integrating their working knowledge of composition, line, shape, positive and negative space. We also discussed the recent Jewish holiday TuB'shvat which honors trees. Students observed that recycling at home and at school is a way to preserve the enviornment.

Turtles 4-E

In combination with their study of aquariums, the fourth grade created turtles and integrated their knowledge of the art elements. Students began with a contour line drawing of a turtle using shape. Adding blue and white tempera paint with different amounts of water altered the value. Students sprinkled kosher salt to convey a texture.

Janney Elementary K (Butterflies)

In collaborating with their study of symmetry in the classroom the art class created butterflies. First we read the story, "The Hungry Catapillar" and made butterflies using tissue paper. Students demonstrated their proficiency in symmetry by dividing their paper in half and adding the same design on each side.
