probable Lesser Canada Goose (B. c. parvipes)

This large-bodied Canada Goose was associating with about 500 Snow Geese just east of LA-27 off Pintail Wildlife Dr. at Cameron Prairie NWR in Cameron Parish, LA. Unfortunately, it was not discovered until about 5:50 PM, so limited daylight precluded any additional or better-quality photos. After ruling out Richardson's Cackling Goose (B. h. hutchinsii) - the only regularly occurring of the Canada/Cackling complex of natural and wild origin in Louisiana - on basis of body size, neck length, and bill structure/ size, it was apparent that this individual belonged to one of the larger-bodied Canada taxa. Based on body size, plumage, and bill size/structure, both Giant and Moffitt's/Great Basin Canada Geese (B. c. maxima and B. c. moffitti, respectively), which are very similar in size and plumage coloration, can be eliminated as possible candidates. This particular individual was much too small and delicate, short-necked, and dusky-breasted to fit either of those largest-bodied groups.

Mottled or American Black Duck x Mallard hybrid?

This adult male Mottled/Am. Black/hybrid was digiscoped at a small, cypress-studded cove of Poverty Point Reservoir off N. Dam Rd., ca. 0.4 mi. E of LA-17 (across from Black Bear Golf Club), ca. 4 mi. N of Delhi (Richland Parish) on 13 Jan 2011. The male, presumably paired with a pure female Mallard, was accompanying a small group of seemingly pure Mallards and a Northern Shoveler. At first, this individual appeared very Am. Black Duck-like, at least from a distance, but upon closer inspection the plumage just didn't match up. The plumage seemed a better fit for typical, darker W. Gulf coast _maculosa_ Mottled. Warmer tones overall and the typical v-shaped marks on interior flank feathers. However, not shown in these digiscoped photos was a purplish, not teal blue, iridescent speculum bordered by black, which to me, was reminiscent of AMBD and not MODU. What's more perplexing about this individual is the location in extreme ne. LA where both AMBD and MODU occur very rarely.

Possible Taverner's Cackling Goose (B. h. taverneri)

This adult Cackling Goose (CACG) was photo'd at a well-established Canada Goose wintering and migratory stopover location in Lancaster Co. in se. PA. This particular individual exhibited features incongruent with the expected Richardson's CACG (B. h. hutchinsii), which have been present in variable numbers at this site since early November 2009 (excluding three-week period in Feb following two major snowstorms). Although difficult to ascertain- at least away from breeding grounds in Alaska- this bird appears to be a likely candidate for Taverner's CACG. Some pro-Taverner's features (based on what is currently known/postulated regarding the ssp. ID) are as follows; darker breast almost concolorous w/ mantle, prominent white collar (unreliable field mark but artifact of darkness of breast), longer-necked, longer-billed, and more-gently sloping forehead than Richardson's CACG. Additionally, this bird seemed larger-bodied in comparison to CAGO than is typical for smaller Richardson's CACG.

Snowy Egret (juvenile)

This presumed juv. Snowy Egret was originally discovered -thought to be a Little Egret- by Chuck Chalfant on 29 July. Although initial found in the marsh off Blue Gill Rd. in Lancaster Co., the egret was favoring a shallow cove off PA-472 on the Chester Co. side the following day. Between 3 and 4 PM, it actively foraged for small fish in the shallows at the edge of a mudflat. Similar to the ad. LIEG at Bombay Hook NWR (DE), this individual frequently used the "foot stirring" technique to locate prey. However, as expected, this juv. appeared to be much less experienced than the adult. Interestingly, it was the only small egret noted at the reservoir during that time. LIEG is casual vagrant to the Atlantic coast. Most U.S. vagrants are suspected to be of Caribbean origin simply following SNEG north during post-breeding movements. However, these New World breeding colonies in the West Indies (e.g. Barbados) are a fairly recent phenomenon arising from transoceanic dispersal from W. Africa.

White Ibis (Eudocimus albus)

This juvenile White Ibis was first discovered by Bob Schutsky on 10 July 2008. It appears to prefer the shady edge of a backwater lagoon where it continued through 15 July. The ibis has not strayed far from this particular spot since its arrival. WHIB breeds as far north as extreme se. VA. Most WHIB are migratory and post-breeding dispersals are prone to wander far from their normal range. WHIB is a casual late summer vagrant to PA, and nearly all records pertain to inexperienced juveniles. Interestingly, Lancaster Co.'s first WHIB was recorded at the flats on 20 July 1972 (fide LCBC 1991). This video was taken on 15 July 2008 at 9:30 AM EDT.

Little Egret (Egretta garzetta garzetta)

This breeding adult Little Egret was first discovered by Devich Farbotnik on 7 June 2008 at Shearness Pool, Bombay Hook NWR furnishing the 3rd well-documented record for DE. Remarkably, it was also the third Eurasian stray to visit DE in a period of three months. This long-staying vagrant actively foraged for small aquatic vertebrates in the shallow freshwater impoundments of Shearness or Bear Swamp Pools, and occasionally along the edges of the adjacent tidal salt marsh....This video was captured through the scope on 10 June 2008 at ~9:30 AM EDT.

Wilson's Storm-Petrel (Oceanites oceanicus)

One of the most abundant birds in the world, Wilson's Storm-Petrels are very numerous and widepsread throughout the Atlantic. These worn and molting adults were only a few of many gathering at the boat's chum slick out over the deep pelagic waters of the Gulf stream off NC. By late summer, the fresh juveniles will arrive to join the adults in these nutrient-rich waters. On this particular trip, it happened to be the most numerous species encountered, as if often the case here in spring-summer-fall. Storm-Petrels in the genus Oceanites are characterized by their diagnostic foot pattering feeding style and long, dangling legs projecting past the tail tip in flight. This transequatorial migrant breeds colonially in burrows and rock crevices along coasts and on oceanic islands in the southern oceans, and spends the off-season in middle lattitudes of the North Atlantic. Canada Warbler (Wilsonia canadensis)

This adult male Canada Warbler was actively foraging in the low canopy of a sugarberry at Peveto Beach Woods. There were at least 2-3 other Canadas present in the coastal woodlot following the passage of a fairly strong cold front overnight. CAWA is a late, primarily circum-Gulf migrant and rarely arrives before early May in coastal LA. In the fall, it is one of the earliest southbound warblers to pass through en route to the tropics, usually between mid-August and late September. Unlike many other neotropical warblers, Canadas have a very narrow window of passage in spring and fall, occuring only in small numbers during a period of a week or so at both seasons. This particular morning was well above average with a total of 4 CAWA at a single woodlot. CAWA is a rare spring and uncommon fall transient throughout LA, though generally less reported at inland sites. This video was taken on 16 May 2008 at 9:00 AM CDT.

House Crow (Corvus splendens)

This House Crow was first discovered and photographed by Gary Broussard at Hackberry Ridge on 6 May 2008. The vocal corvid was still present in the general area on 16 May. It was loosely associating with a Fish Crow and flying back and forth along the scrubby, coastal acacia-sugarberry-tallow ridge. For minutes at a time, the HOCR would perch at the top of a bare tree and deliver its raspy, croaking calls before moving on to the next perch. This exotic species is native to s. Asia south through the Indian subcontinent and has been expanding its range via barge traffic and rapidly colonizing parts of Europe and Malaysia. Presumably, this individual was transported oversea via tanker ship to a local port. Cassin's Sparrow (Aimophila cassinii)

This adult Cassin's Sparrow was first discovered while singing and preforming its skylarking display by Terry Davis. The male sparrow has resided (for now) along the brushy edge of a wheat field at the end of Viking Dr. in Bossier City. It represents a first state record for LA! Since the sparrow was initially found, it has been singing less frequently and is no longer skylarking. Maybe it realizes that it is out-of-range and there are no mates to attract or rival males competing for territory. When singing, it preferred to perch on this fence or on low shrubbery. CASP has a history of vagrancy and occurs casually much farther north and east of its normal breeding range, which is the dry, short grass prairie region of the south-central and southwestern U.S. There are records from as far northeast as Ontario and Nova Scotia (CN) to Maine. Most vagrants are thought to be males 'overshooting' their breeding grounds in late spring. This video was taken on 12 May 2008 at ~8:15 AM CDT.

Willow Flycatcher (Empidonax traillii trailli)

This male Willow Flycatcher was one of at least two counter-singing males in a low, wet area of early sucessional willows-cottonwoods at Cane's Landing in Bossier City. There was also a third WIFL present, which may have been a female. During our visit, this particular male made a few brief forays to an unobstructed perch where it sang for a minute or so. Within seconds, it was back singing from the concealment of the thick patch of willows. WIFL is a review list species in LA, primarily due to its circum-Gulf migratory pattern and its cryptic Alder Flycatcher congener. However, WIFL is a rare and very localized breeder in n. LA. A pair or two has returned to this location in recent summers to breed. WIFL is a very rare late spring and early fall transient through LA, and may be more numerous in early fall when "Traill's" Flycatchers become fairly numerous, especially in coastal LA. Gray-cheeked Thrush (Catharus minimus aliciae)

This Gray-cheeked Thrush was foraging in the leaf litter in the shaded understory of the mature live oak chenier woodlot at Peveto Beach Woods. On this particular day, Catharus thrushes were numerous with several of each Veery and Gray-cheeked and a few Swainson's. Late April through early May is the peak of Catharus thrush migration along the Gulf coast of LA. GCTH is a fairly common spring and uncommon fall transient throughout LA. Common Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor minor)

This adult male Common Nighthawk was roosting on a gravel parking lot at the Sweet Lake Land & Oil Co. complex nr. Sweet Lake. Relying on its complex, cryptically-colored plumage for camouflage during the day, it posed motionless within a few meters. CONI is a common spring/fall transient and summer resident throughout LA. Swainson's Warbler (Limnothlypis swainsonii)

This complaisant adult male Swainson's Warbler sang emphatically from an exposed perch above a dense understory of elderberry, yaupon, and switchcane in a disturbed, deciduous woodlot on Evangeline Hwy. in Starks. Although normally very difficult to glimpse as they skulk and sing from within a shaded thicket, this individual was solicited with playback and came in close for superb views. This was one of many singing males encountered throughout the morning in the mixed-hardwood bottomlands of the Sabine River basin in Calcasieu Parish. Their loud, ringing song can be heard from quite a distance and incessantly throughout the day. SWWA typically arrive on their breeding grounds by early April and depart earlier in fall than most southern breeding neotropical passerines, by September. SWWA is a very uncommon spring/fall transient and uncommon to locally common summer resident where appropriate habitat exists. This video was taken on 26 April 2008 at ~9:30 AM CDT.

Dickcissel (Spiza americana)

This adult male Dickcissel was one of several males proclaiming territory from a scrubby fence line along Fabacher Rd., SE of Vinton. Multiple flocks comprised of well over a hundred individuals were present at this location throughout the week. From the brushy edges to the fallow fields, the songs of male Dickcissels filled the air. DICK is a common spring/fall transient and fairly common to locally abundant summer resident throughout n. and w. LA, and a generally scarce migrant throughout se. LA. Bell's Vireo (Vireo bellii bellii)

This 'Eastern' Bell's Vireo was foraging mid-story in a thicket of greenbrier tangles and vines at the edge of a mature live oak woodlot on Landry Ln. in Grand Isle. First discovered at 2:05 PM and observed only briefly, it disappeared for nearly 30 minutes before skulking into view again at 2:35 PM. Within a minute or two, it flew back along the edge of the woodlot and was never seen again. Nor was it refound the following morning on 20 April. At this date and with most wintering passerines gone, the BEVI is presumably a migrant, however there are no previous spring records for se. LA. Given that all prior se. LA records pertain to winterers, there is also a possibility of it being a local overwinterer undetected until now despite a fair amount of birder coverage throughout winter and early spring. If accepted by LBRC, this will be only the 8th record for se. LA and only the 2nd for Grand Isle and Jefferson Parish. BEVI is a casual spring/fall transient and very rare winter resident

Gray Kingbird (Tyrannus dominicensis)

This adult Gray Kingbird was discovered amid a group of 12+ Eastern Kingbirds during a migrant feeding frenzy at the north end (back) of Sureway Woods in Grand Isle at ~5 PM. A termite outbreak in a cavity of a live oak was attracting hundreds of insectivores from all around the woodlot. Upwards of 40+ Scarlet Tanagers, ~15 Summer Tanagers, 2 Yellow-billed Cuckoos, and numerous vireos and warblers swarmed to this inviting food source. Overhead many Chimney Swifts and Barn Swallows swooped down into the woodlot to grab termites as they exited the tree cavity. This surreal encounter was culminated by the appearance of this Gray Kingbird. It would sally out from various snags picking off termites along the way. Finding a Gray Kingbird in the woodlot itself was rather unusual, as they typically prefer open scrub. GRAK is a casual to rare spring vagrant throughout coastal LA, primarily in se. LA where it is nearly annual at Grand Isle. This video was taken on 19 April 2008 at ~5 PM CDT.

Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis minimus)

This adult male Shiny Cowbird was first discovered displaying toward a male Brown-headed Cowbird at ~3:30 PM in an open woodlot at the terminus of Landry Ln. in Grand Isle. Its liquid, bubbling (hardly audible) song was delivered several times during the observation. It was refound the following day (20 April) displaying at the top of a live oak on Cemetery Ln. at 9:10 AM. This is the third consecutive spring that I've encountered an adult male Shiny Cowbird in the vicinity of Landry-Cemetery Ln. It's very possible that this same individual male returns every spring to Grand Isle, usually mid-April. Although there have been reports of females in the past at Grand Isle, hard evidence is lacking and the status of cryptic females remains unknown. Grand Isle is one of the only places in the U.S. where all three cowbirds occur regularly in spring. SHCO is a casual spring vagrant to coastal LA with only a few records outside of Grand Isle. Great Horned Owl nestling (Bubo virginianus)

This fluffy Great Horned Owl nestling was discovered in the grove of mature live oaks at the west end of Willow Island while searching for neotropical migrants. Apparently the chick fell out of the nest or lack there of, which appeared to be in a crotch of a mature live oak only about 8' up. Instead of the typical stick nest, there was just a pile of feathers and excess white wash, which is not surprising given the wide range of substrates used by nesting GHOWs. At only a few weeks old, the nestling now laid helpless at the base of the trunk. One of the adults flushed from the live oak prior to finding the chick. These coastal cheniers provide optimal breeding sites for predatory raptors such as GHOW, as they offer plenty of suitable cover, tall trees, and a burgeoning population of small mammals. Plus, there is little competition w/ other nesting raptors. GHOW is a fairly common to locally common permanent resident throughout LA. This video was taken on 13 April 2008 at 12:30 P

Orchard Oriole (Icterus spurius spurius)

This adult male Orchard Oriole was singing loudly from the top of a dead ragweed stalk on Henry St., near the courthouse in downtown Cameron. A significant flight of OROR grounded over the weekend in coastal Cameron Parish as a result of unfavorable headwinds encountered after the passage of a dry, cold front overnight Friday (11 April). The moderate northwest winds forced incoming trans-Gulf migrants to put down at coastal locations and especially numerous were buntings and orioles. Why a male oriole, after an exhaustive 500-mile Gulf crossing, would spend its precious energy singing rather than resting and foraging seems odd to me, but illustrates sexual selection at play. OROR is a common spring/fall transient and common summer resident across LA where suitable habitat is present. OROR prefer early successional scrub and forest edge habitat to breed. Blackburnian Warbler (Dendroica fusca)

This brilliant adult male Blackburnian Warbler was the first of the season for LA at Grand Isle on 5 April, which is a typical spring arrival date for this species on the LA Gulf coast. It was foraging high in the canopy of a mature live oak in the company of a Red-eyed Vireo, Northern Parula, and a Yellow-throated Warbler. On this particular afternoon, a minor fallout of neotropical trans-Gulf migrants occurred following the passage of a frontal system earlier in the day. BLBW is a fairly common spring and uncommon fall migrant throughout LA, although most readily observed at coastal locations. This video was taken on 5 April 2008 at 3:30 PM CDT.

Glaucous Gull (Larus hyperboreus hyperboreus)

This worn first cycle Glaucous Gull, presumably of the nominate race from arctic Canada and n. Eurasia, was found at Belle Pass in Port Fourchon by Marty Guidry on 31 March 2008. This large, white-winged gull continued at this location through at least 5 April 2008 when these rather poor images were obtained. Between low lighting conditions and a very skittish gull, it was difficult to obtain quality video/photos. This exceedingly pale gull could be seen over a mile away as it wandered along the wrack line in search of food. A pale-tipped bicolored bill, dark iris, and worn primaries suggest a first-winter individual. However, these features are nearly impossible to see in the images. Also, it appears to be replacing a few of the innermost primaries. GLGU is a rare transient and winter visitor to coastal LA. There are now 40+ records of this gull for LA with most reports occurring in spring (Apr-May) on the immediate coast. This video was taken on 5 April 2008 at 9:30 AM CDT.

Golden-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia atricapilla)

This confiding adult Golden-crowned Sparrow was first discovered during the Robert Lee CBC on 15 December 2007 in a dry, semi-open scrub woodlot at the corner of Paint Creek Loop and TX-158, W of Robert Lee. The sparrow has continued at this location through late March in the company of several White-crowned Sparrows. Dense mesquite-acacia thickets and scattered junipers provide ideal cover for this flock of Zonotrichia sparrows. The flock moved around frequently and foraged in patches of various grasses throughout the vacant lot. GCSP is only a casual winter vagrant to Texas, primarily in w. TX, and there are now 30+ records of this species for TX. This video was taken on 20 March 2008 at ~11:00 AM CDT.

Common Loon (Gavia immer)

These two largely basic-plumaged adult Common Loons were diving in the shallow waters of Lake Pontchartrain very close to the harbor breakwall in Mandeville. The latter images show a loon starting to attain some alternate plumage features, which usually occurs by March on the wintering grounds. Unfortunately, COLO is the only loon on the official state list for LA. COLO is a fairly common transient and winter resident throughout coastal LA, and much less common on inland bodies of water throughout the state. Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus)

A colony of at least 16 Monk Parakeets was busily and noisily adding to and reconstructing their bulky stick nest in the crown of a date palm between Carlson and Pratt Dr. on Lakeshore Dr. in New Orleans. This site is across the canal, W of UNO campus on Lake Pontchartrain. MOPA is the most widespread and common Psittacid in the U.S. with established populations as far north as IL, NY, and CT. In LA, MOPA are established residents in New Orleans, however they have not been added to the official state list. A general uncertainty of population status throughout the Greater New Orleans area and a lack of documented breeding records (i.e. nest colonies) are stalling decisions by the LBRC to accept this exotic species on the state list. It's interesting to note that the parakeets survived a category 4 hurricane and continue to thrive in relatively good numbers, which may be solid evidence to support acceptance as an established resident and breeder. Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia)

This SY male Black-and-white Warbler was discovered at the edge of a dense, mature woodlot off LA-39 in Phoenix. It was associating with a mixed flock of passerines in an elderberry-dogwood-ragweed thicket at the base of a large live oak. Apparently overwintering in this woodlot. BAWW is a rare but regular winter resident to s. and coastal LA, and occurs nearly annually in winter in Plaquemines Parish. This video was taken on 18 February 2008 at ~1:00 PM CST.

White-crested Elaenia (Elaenia albiceps chilensis)

This presumed White-crested Elaenia was discovered by Dan and Honey Jones on 9 February 2008 at the Valley Land Fund's lush woodlot on Sheepshead St. in South Padre Island, TX (Cameron Co). Elaenias are a widespread group of neotropical, primarily frugivorous flycatchers that range from Mexico south to southern Chile. White-crested Elaenias (WCEL) are a polytypic taxon found only in S.A. from Chile north through Peru, however 3 of the ssp. are resident. Many ornithologists believe that WCEL should be split into two or more spp. The 'Chilean' WCEL is a strong austral migrant that breeds in the s. Andes of Chile and Argentina and migrates north to winter from w. Peru to e. Brazil. Although remote, a potential reverse migrant or 'overshoot' could show up well north of its huge wintering range. Very remarkably, this individual would be the first TX, U.S., ABA, AOU, and N. Hemisphere record (if accepted). An unbelievable find! This video was taken on 10 February 2008 at ~9:30 AM CST

Black-headed Grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus)

This presumptive adult female Black-headed Grosbeak has apparently been overwintering on Jim Delahoussaye's property for the past four years! This winter, the grosbeak arrived on 19 December 2007 and has been present almost daily through early February 2008. The BHGR was identified and photographed by Dave Patton on 4 February 2008. It visits the feeders about once an hour, and stays only a few minutes per visit to gorge itself on sunflower seeds. BHGR is a very rare vagrant and a rare winter visitor throughout LA, showing up most regularly at feeding stations. It has become nearly annual in the Lafayette area in recent years with usually one or two reports per winter. However, a few of these reports are left unidentified. Black Tern (Chlidonias niger surinamensis)

This first-winter Black Tern was discovered actively foraging over the Cameron oxidation ponds, off Davis Rd. in Cameron in the company of Bonaparte's Gulls and Forster's Terns. An exceptional find for February! Presumably the same individual observed by Matt Pontiff in early January 2008 at the Calcasieu Ship Channel (Cameron ferry). There are very few North American winter records of Black Terns, as this Larid typically winters in the Pacific waters from S. Mexico to Peru. Although several records exist from coastal CBCs in LA, there are essentially no records of BLTE lingering into January or February. Currently, there are now 2 or 3 sight records from Cameron in January and no previous occurences in February. However, there is one prior February sight record in LA from lower Plaquemines Parish on 6 February 1971 (RS, RN). Remarkably, this particular individual represents the first well-documented, true-winter record of BLTE for LA. Video was taken on 3 February 2008 at ~3:30 PM CST

Least Flycatcher (Empidonax minimus)

This Least Flycatcher was one of three present at an open baccharis-poisonbean-ragweed woodlot along LA-82 nr. the South Cameron High School Sports Complex in Oak Grove. Three Least Flycatchers at a single location in February in LA is an unprecedented occurence. In fact, this is only the second February occurence of LEFL from SW LA. Although a few other February records exist, they pertain to primarily single individuals in SE LA, particularly Plaquemines Parish. The only exception is a report of two individuals from Loomis Pass in lower Plaquemines Parish on 5 February 1999 (AP). LEFL is a very rare winter resident at s. interior and coastal locations throughtout LA, occurring most regularly in Plaquemines Parish. However, there is a recent winter record or two from January in N. LA. LEFL is occasionally recorded on CBCs, but by January they become increasingly scarce and remain very rare throughout winter. Virginia Rail (Rallus limicola limicola)

This very confiding adult Virginia Rail was coaxed out of the surrounding freshwater marsh along Smith Ridge Rd. in Johnson Bayou. It's not everyday that a VIRA allows such stellar, unobstructed views. The rail even proceeded to vocalize away from the cover of the reeds and cattails. VIRA is a fairly common migrant and winter resident to freshwater marshes throughout LA, though most often only heard and seldom seen. This video was taken on 2 February 2008 at ~9:30 AM CST.

Sora (Porzana carolina)

This exceedingly cooperative adult male Sora was foraging for aquatic invertebrates in a shallow freshwater marsh along Smith Ridge Rd. in Johnson Bayou. SORA is a common migrant and winter resident to freshwater, brackish, and occasionally saltwater marshes throughtout LA. Though typically more numerous throughout coastal LA. Sprague's Pipit (Anthus spragueii)

This obliging Sprague's Pipit was foraging in the short grass along the edge of the road. Typically a secretive grassland inhabitant, this individual was unafraid and allowed for close approach. SPPI is an uncommon winter resident in open grasslands, pastures, and along roadsides throughout most of LA. Although more numerous in the NW corner of the state, they are much less numerous and irregular throughout s. interior and coastal LA. This video was taken on 27 January 2008 at ~9:30 AM CST.

Swainson's Hawk (Buteo swainsoni)

This light/intermediate juvenile Swainson's Hawk was perched over a drainage ditch along PR-11 in Buras. One or two juveniles now overwinter annually in lower Plaquemines Parish. Upwards of 10-12 Broad-winged Hawks also overwinter in the lower Mississippi River delta, making this a unique and diverse raptor location in winter. Three juv. BWHA were observed on this particular day and two were not far from the SWHA in Buras. In fall, migrating raptors funnel south through the delta to find themselves surrounded by the open waters of the Gulf. To avoid crossing the Gulf or moving back north up the pennisula, they reside in the lower delta throughout the winter. Presumably most individuals survive the typically mild winters. Usually only juveniles make this mistake, however a few subadult and adult BWHAs have been documented to overwinter as well. This video was taken on 20 January 2008 at ~12:30 PM CST.

Green Heron (Butorides virescens virescens)

This adult Green Heron was one of two present in a clump of cattails along E. Lakeshore Dr. at University Lake in Baton Rouge. Although one or two typically overwinter on City Park/University Lake annually, they are still fairly difficult to pin down on a regular basis. GRHE is an uncommon winter resident throughout coastal LA, and much less common inland during winter. Spring arrivals typicaly begin to appear in late March- early April and many reside to breed throughout LA. This video was taken on 19 January 2008 at ~4:00 PM CST.

Yellow-throated Warbler (Dendroica dominica albilora)

This adult Yellow-throated Warbler was discovered foraging in the large live oaks at the Amoco Rd. woodlot in Cameron. After careful observation, it was determined to be the western ssp. (albilora), which is the typical breeder/migrant throughout LA. However, collected specimens and empirical data suggest that most wintering individuals pertain to the eastern ssp. (dominica). Little is known about the winter distribution of the Florida panhandle ssp. (stoddardi). The subspecific status of YTWA overwintering in LA is still not entirely clear. Either way, YTWA is a rare but regular winter resident encountered primarily in coastal LA. This video was taken on 13 January 2008 at ~1:30 PM CST.

Lincoln's Sparrow (Melospiza lincolnii lincolnii)

This Lincoln's Sparrow was one of a few observed throughout Cameron Parish on this particular day. This individual posed nicely in a ragweed thicket beside the courthouse. Bewick's Wren (Thryomanes bewickii bewickii)

This Bewick's Wren was actively foraging at an abandoned corral along US-71 nr. Twelve Mile Bayou in N. Shreveport. Overgrown lots with old buildings/farm equipment and woody tangles are the favored haunts of BEWR. The eastern subspecies (bewickii) has been in steep decline over the past few decades. Habitat loss or competition with House Wren are potential causes of this decline. BEWR is typically only a winter visitor to LA, although breeding is suspected in a few areas of N LA. Vagrants occasionally show up in s. interior and coastal LA in fall/winter. In winter, BEWR is very localized in the northern part of the state, usually arriving in late Oct- early Nov. Common Redpoll (Carduelis flammea flammea)

The winter finch irruption of 2007/08 was highlighted by the widespread presence of Common Redpolls across the Northeast. This particular flock in the Cayuga Lake Basin of New York was exceedingly large with estimates between 500-700 individuals present including at least one Hoary Redpoll (C. hornemanni exilipes). The redpolls took advantage of the wide variety of grasses and herbaceous plants at the NE corner of the refuge. This video was taken on 8 January 2008 at ~9:30 AM EST.

Pine Siskin (Carduelis pinus pinus)

The winter finch invasion of 2007/08 was marked by an abundance of Pine Siskins across the eastern U.S. with a few individuals wandering as far south as S. TX and LA. At the Troyer's feeders in the ridge and valley region of PA, an especially large number of siskins had amassed throughout the winter season. By early January, there were 200+ siskins visiting the feeders on a regular basis, which is a very rare occurence in PA. The skittish flocks would take flight if approached to closely, so it was difficult to obtain quality video. This video was taken on 3 January 2008 at ~10:00 AM EST.

Buff-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia yucatanensis chalconota)

This presumptive imm. male Buff-bellied Hummingbird was first discovered on 23 November 2007 by Paul Conover, Jim Ingold, and Charlie Lyon. The hummingbird is faithful to a patch of Turk's cap at Rutherford Motel Woods and continues through 7 December 2007. It foraged for nectar frequently and never left the cover of the Turk's cap. BUFH is a rare to casual winter visitor (away from feeders) throughout coastal LA. Although, much more regular at backyard nectar feeders across s. interior and coastal LA. Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus platypterus)

Surprisingly, both of these juvenile Broad-winged Hawks were perched on a large, dead bald cypress off Henry St. in Cameron. Only a single juv. Broad-wing was noted up until today. Both are lingering late into the fall/winter season. Presumably the same two individuals continue through 13 January 2008, though relocated in a different area. BWHA typically depart by late October. Common Tern (Sterna hirundo hirundo)

This adult winter Common Tern was foraging over the Cameron oxidation ponds with another first-winter Common Tern and ~50 Forster's Terns. Common Tern shows a trend of lingering late into the fall/winter, and potentially spending the entire winter in small numbers along the LA coast. Otherwise, it is an uncommon-common spring and fall transient throughout the coastal zone. However, the abundance of this tern seems to fluctuate every year. It was difficult to obtain quality video with the overcast conditions combined with the erratic flight of the diving tern. This poor video was taken on 7 December 2007 at ~2:45 PM CST.

Greater Scaup (Aythya marila nearctica)

This first-winter male Greater Scaup was preening on the shoreline of Capitol Lake in downtown Baton Rouge. Every winter hundreds of Aythya, primarily Lesser Scaup and Ring-necked Duck, reside on the lake, which is evidently the deepest lake in the metropolitan area. GRSC is a very uncommon-rare occurence to inland waters throughout the state and can be similarly uncommon along the coast in some winters. Although not the best lighting, these video images provide the essential field marks for the scaup's identification. To be extra confident in the ID, the scaup was intentionally flushed for a full assessment of all GRSC field marks. This video was taken on 3 December 2007 at ~9:30 AM CST.

This Western Meadowlark was one of eight present in a freshly-plowed field nr. the Red River Raceway. The identification was clinched by repeated vocalizations including soft singing. This female Purple Finch was one of two present in the mature live oaks behind the Cameron Courthouse. The finches were very sedentary and were taking cover from the strong NW wind. Lesser Nighthawk (Chordeiles acutipennis texensis)

This presumed male Lesser Nighthawk was first noticed at 5:20 PM CST foraging over the road and freshwater marsh along LA-27 at First Bayou. The nighthawk was observed and carefully studied at fairly close range for a few minutes before flying off toward the SW. LENI is a casual fall/winter vagrant to coastal LA. Yellow-headed Blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus)

This first-winter male Yellow-headed Blackbird was picked out of a mega-flock of cowbirds and red-wingeds at the corner of Arceneaux and Chalkey Rd. This intersection has become a favored gathering location for wintering grackles, blackbirds, and cowbirds. Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis)

The widespread invasion of Red-breasted Nuthatches continues with numerous individuals reaching the Gulf coast of LA and beyond. These were two of three present in a mature live oak woodlot in the town of Cameron following a night of stiff NE winds. The irruptive RBNU is an otherwise scarce winter visitor to LA. Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus)

An unusual occurence for coastal LA, this juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker was one of two inidividuals working the old live oaks in a Cameron woodlot. This juvenile was particularly active, flying from oak to oak and chattering frequently. RHWO is a fairly common permanent resident throughout LA, however it is only a casual wanderer to the coastal zone. Krider's Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis borealis)

This pale juvenile Krider's Red-tail was first discovered while attempting to locate a putative "White-tailed Hawk" observed only a half hour earlier at the same location at 5:45 PM. The Krider's was still present the following afternoon and video was obtained. Krider's RTHA is an uncommon winter visitor throughout LA, primarily in western LA. Golden-crowned Kinglet (Regulus satrapa satrapa)

The first wave of Golden-crowned Kinglets reached the Gulf coast of LA on the weekend of 27-28 October with a moderate fallout of both kinglets on the latter date. This female GCKI foraged with a small group of kinglets in the dense sugarberry-acacia thickets of Hackberry Ridge. This cooperative Hermit Thrush was one of over a hundred recorded throughout the day along the Cameron coast. This roosting adult female Barn Owl was discovered on a dense bough of a large live oak at Willow Island. This was the sixth BNOW of the day. BNOW move into the coastal cheniers in late fall to spend the winter. BNOW is an uncommon permanent resident throughout LA, though much more numerous at coastal locales in winter. American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus)

This juv. American Bittern froze motionless and allowed for close observation alongside the loop drive at Unit D pool of Lacassine NWR. AMBI are uncommon winter residents of wet fields and marshes throughout LA. Though, breeding is suspected for Lacassine NWR in recent years. This presumed juvenile Ash-throated Flycatcher, in active wing and tail molt, was silently foraging on Lepidoptera larvae within a dense sweet acacia thicket along Hackberry Ridge. This individual was the first of the fall for LA, and falls within the expected arrival dates for the species. Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow (Ammodramus nelsoni nelsoni)

This atypical Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow was hardly secretive and perched up for a minute or so, allowing for excellent views and video. This was one of three individuals present at Sabine NWR headquarters in the early AM, following a dry cold front. NSTSs normally arrive in coastal LA by early or mid-October, usually depending on weather patterns, and are fairly common winter residents in wet fields/marshes throughout coastal LA. Common Ground-Dove (Columbina passerina pallescens?)

This confiding adult female Common Ground-Dove was associating with a loose flock of Inca Doves in an abandoned, overgrown woodlot nr. Lacassine NWR headquarters unit. Common Ground-Doves are becoming increasingly rare residents across southern and coastal LA. Very sporadic in occurrence. White-tailed Kite (Elanus leucurus majusculus)

First discovered on 16 September 2007, a family of 4 juvenile White-tailed Kites has been frequenting the weedy fields and open marsh at Willow Island. The breeding status of WTKIs is poorly known in coastal SW LA, however it's speculated that nesting occurs in most summers. Once documented nesting at E. Jetty Woods in Cameron, this species has been absent in recent summers, especially following Hurricane Rita in 2005. These four juvenile kites provide strong evidence for successful local breeding once again in the area, presumably in the Willow Island vicinity. Surprisingly, only a single adult was noted in the vicinity on 4 October 2007 (SWC, DLD) after many subsequent visits throughout Sep-Oct 2007. WTKIs are more common and widespread throughout SW LA in late fall and winter, as migrants move into the region. This video was taken on 16 September 2007 at ~4:30 PM CDT.

This very early juvenile Chipping Sparrow was flushed from the overgrown parking lot at E. Jetty Beach in Cameron. Based on empirical data, juveniles show an odd pattern of arriving at coastal locations early in the fall, well before any adults in most cases. Groove-billed Ani (Crotophaga sulcirostris sulcirostris)

This vocal adult Groove-billed Ani was excitedly pumping its tail and calling from the edge of an oak-sugarberry-wild grape thicket at Peveto Beach Woods. A marginally early fall arrival, this particular individual was the first of the fall for LA. Since this sighting, reports of single anis have surfaced throughout the coastal zone, eluding to an above average fall/winter for GBAN in LA. GBANs were once regular fall transients and winter residents throughout coastal LA, however they have become very rare and irregular in occurrence in recent decades. A possible result of habitat loss on the breeding/wintering grounds contributing to a general decline in population size. This video was taken on 16 September 2007 at ~12:30 PM CDT.

Bell's Vireo (Vireo bellii bellii)

Remarkably, this silent presumed adult Bell's Vireo was discovered foraging in live oaks and sugarberries only minutes after the GBAN encounter at Peveto Beach Woods. BEVIs are very rare fall migrants throughout LA, Sep-early Oct, and occassional winter residents. Excluding anomalous winter occurrences, there are less than 20 records of BEVIs away from potential breeding locations in N. LA, where they formerly bred locally in small numbers in past decades. Recent breeding evidence is lacking, and therefore, BEVIs may or may not still breed in the state. BEVI is a LBRC review list species. Fan-tailed Warbler (Euthlypis lachrymosa tephra)

A casual vagrant to the U.S. from the moist, shady canyons of Mexico, this long-overdue adult male Fan-tailed Warbler established a 1st state record for Texas, and only the 8th record for the U.S. (7 previous records from AZ). This long-staying vagrant was first discovered by Eric Carpenter on 13 August 2007 and persisted in upper Pine Canyon until 24 September 2007. FTWAs are skulkers and forage by hopping or walking on or near the ground in redstart fashion, wagging and fanning their tails in the process. During this particular encounter, the warbler was secretive, but readily visible throughout the morning, favoring the denser maple-oak thickets with tree falls. Remarkably, the warbler sang a total of 32 times, accompanied by equally as many piercing call notes. Unfortunately, the video camera battery died halfway through the visit and closer video opportunities were lost. A very memorable experience nonetheless. Audubon's Shearwater (Puffinus lherminieri lherminieri)

These presumed juvenile Audubon's Shearwaters contributed to an exceptional tally of 17 individuals recorded for the day over Hydrographer Canyon off MA on a BBC 'extreme' pelagic trip. This impressive number of AUSH established a new record high count for the state. The warm, deep waters of the canyon are at the northern limit of their range, and AUSH is an uncommon summer visitor in offshore waters at these northern latitudes. The record high count of AUSH was one of very few highlights on this unusually slow day of seabirding off MA in late August. A week later, the same pelagic trip yielded a first state record Macaronesian Shearwater (Puffinus baroli ?), formerly a ssp. of Little Shearwater. Greater Shearwater (Puffinus gravis)

Surprisingly scarce on the BBC 'extreme' pelagic trip, these Greater Shearwaters were two of several encountered throughout the day from Nantucket Shoals to Hydrographer Canyon off MA. Typically, GRSH is a very common summer visitor to MA offshore waters, with substantially higher numbers in late summer during the peak of southbound movement. Flesh-footed Shearwater (Puffinus carneipes)

A very uncommon occurrence in WA waters, this Flesh-footed Shearwater was one of two present, trailing a fishing fleet along the edge of Grays Canyon. The adult flesh-footeds were spotted amidst a frenzy of albatross, shearwaters, and fulmars. A highly sought-after species for the trip participants. Sooty Shearwater (Puffinus griseus)

A very interesting discovery was this partially leucistic Sooty Shearwater loafing with a group of Western and California Gulls near a fishing vessel, ca. 15 mi. offshore. Initially passed off for another gull, a second look revealed its true identity as a shearwater. A presumed Sooty Shearwater based on size, structure, and association. Never in Westport seabird history have the leaders observed a shearwater with such extensive albinism. A remarkable and unusual find, indeed. This video was taken on 11 August 2007 at ~3:30 PM PST.

Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis rogersii)

This polymorphic seabird was very numerous in the offshore waters of WA. All three color morphs were observed, however dark morphs significantly outnumber the light and intermediate morphs in the Pacific. This confiding subadult Pomarine Jaeger remained at rest on the water within close proximity of the boat, allowing for a full assessment of Pomarine-like features. Black-footed Albatross (Phoebastria nigripes)

This Black-footed Albatross was one of many observed over the deep waters of Grays Canyon on this pelagic outing. Older adults show substantially more white on the face and can appear 'white-headed' with wear and bleaching such as this individual. The albatross allowed up-close views as they crowded the boat for chum. BFAL is an uncommon- fairly common permanent resident off the WA coast. Lawrence's Goldfinch (Carduelis lawrenci)

This adult male Lawrence's Goldfinch appeared at the Hardie's feeders in the Datil Mtns of southwestern New Mexico in mid-July 2007. Although a more regular fall/winter vagrant, LAGO is a very rare summer occurrence in New Mexico. The goldfinch continued to frequent the feeders through August. White-tailed Ptarmigan (Lagopus leucura)

This pair of White-tailed Ptarmigans was discovered after a two-hour search atop the Santa Barbara Ridge at ~12,500' in the Sangre de Cristo Mtns. The Sangre de Cristo range contains many of the highest peaks in New Mexico and encompasses most of Taos Co. in the northern tier of the state. Initially, the chattering of the summer-plumaged male eluded to his presence. The highly cryptic ptarmigan was then spotted amidst the rocks. Standing only a few meters away, we were allowed fantastic up-close looks as the ptarmigan froze for several minutes before slowly moving up the ridge. While marveling at the first ptarmigan, a second ptarmigan emerged from the rocks nearby. Surprisingly, it was a ptarmigan in winter plumage. A very unusual find for late summer. However, a few ptarmigans have rare hormonal deficiencies that may arrest the normal molt cycle. The winter-plumaged ptarmigan is presumably a female, based on recent work (Braun et.al.). The long, arduous trek had paid off!

Dusky Grouse (Dendragapus obscurus)

This adult male Dusky Grouse was one of five encountered during the ptarmigan search. Dusky Grouse are typically elusive denizens of dark coniferous forests and difficult to come by in New Mexico. This particular sighting was very interesting because the grouse were high above tree line foraging on the alpine tundra. A group of five is a remarkable count for any single location in New Mexico. Northern Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium gnoma pinicola)

This adult and fledgling Northern Pygmy-Owl were only two of four present throughout Seep Canyon on this particular morning. Seep Canyon is located high in the Sacramento Mountains at ~7,800 ft. in south-central NM. Here, NPOW reaches the southeastern-most limit of its range. The owls were discovered during my search for Purple Martin nesting colonies. Very active and vocal throughout the morning, the owls preferred the edge of a burn area adjacent to a dense stand of mature Douglas-fir and ponderosa pines. The edge of a burned coniferous forest provides the ideal habitat for the owls with a good source of songbird prey along with suitable cover for roosting. These diversity-rich sections of open, burned coniferous forests tend to be very reliable places to check for the species. Mobbing passerines often eluded to their whereabouts in the canopy and one or more owls were readily visible at a time throughout my stay. Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis lucida)

This pair of 'Mexican' Spotted Owls has been present in upper Miller Canyon for several years. Both owls display leg bands, not visible in the video. Not surprisingly, the owls were very accomodating and allowed for close approach. Halfway through the observation, the owls began preforming a sort of courtship/bonding behavior, which made the encounter much more interesting. 'Mexican' Spotted Owls are by far the most numerous of the three subspecies found across the western U.S., inhabiting cool, shady canyons throughout the interior southwest. Berylline Hummingbird (Amazilia beryllina viola)

This adult male Berylline Hummingbird frequented the feeders at Ramsey Canyon lodge for most of the summer. On this particular day, the hummingbird only made two very brief visits to the feeder within two hours. Increasingly scarce in AZ, this 'rufous-winged' hummingbird is unmistakable in flight. It is the only regularly occurring hummingbird in N.A. with extensive red in the wings, which is discernible in the video. This video was taken on 1 July 2007 at ~2:00 PM MST.

Chestnut-sided Warbler (Dendroica pennsylvanica)

This adult male Chestnut-sided Warbler appears to have established a territory within the lush thickets of Russian olive and Coyote willow in the Rio Grande bosque of Corrales. First discovered on 5 June 2007 by Trevor Fetz, the warbler remains through 17 June 2007 singing frequently from the highest perch in the undergrowth. This video was taken on 17 June 2007 between 11:00 and 11:30 AM MST. CSWAs are rare spring vagrants throughout New Mexico, however they're one of the more frequently encountered eastern wood-warblers in migration. A summering CSWA is more unusual, and is not likely to find a mate.

Kentucky Warbler (Oporornis formosus)

This adult male Kentucky Warbler represents a first record of this species for San Juan Co. First discovered on 2 June 2007 by Tim Reeves, the warbler continued to sing through 13 June 2007 from the dense Russian olive-New Mexico privet thickets along the Animas River riparian corridor. This video was taken on 11 June 2007 between 1:30 and 2:30 PM MST. KEWAs are very rare spring vagrants throughout New Mexico, though most occurences are from the Rio Grande Valley and at oases on the eastern plains. Therefore, a KEWA in the four corners region is an exceptional record.

Long-eared Owl (Asio otus tuftsi)

This Long-eared Owl nest was found while searching for Gray Vireos in the remote pinyon-juniper canyonlands east of the four corners region in NW NM. At first, one of the owls (presumably male) flushed from the pinyons near the nest at ~6,800 ft. After several mintues of searching, the stick nest was finally discovered occupied by the adult female brooding 3-4 downy young. LEOW is an irruptive breeder throughout northern NM, fairly common in some years and very scarce in others. LEOW is known to nest at elevations as low as ~4,000 ft. in the Rio Grande bosque of Albuquerque up to 8,000 ft. in coniferous mountain canyons. Zone-tailed Hawk (Buteo albonotatus)

This adult Zone-tailed Hawk made an appearance on two separate days in a remote canyon near mp 25, off NM-137 in the Guadalupe Mountains. Presumably a local nester, though a scarce breeder in the area, with only a few pairs present in most summers. On 30 May 2007, the ZTHA cruised north over the canyon, and on 1 June 2007 the bird was observed devouring a small mammal atop a dead pinyon. Spooked, the hawk circled several times, allowing great views, before flying west and out of sight. This video was taken on 1 June 2007 between 9:30 and 10:00 AM MST.

Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus)

This immature Glossy Ibis was foraging in the freshwater pool of unit 7 at Bitter Lake NWR in Roswell. This video was taken on 29 May 2007 between 1:00 and 2:00 PM MST. GLIB are casual, yet increasing in occurrence during spring/summer to wetlands throughout New Mexico, showing up most frequently east of the Rio Grande Valley.

Red-eyed Vireo (Vireo olivaceus)

This Red-eyed Vireo is one of a pair that has potentially nested at this anomalous breeding site for a few summers. The riparian vegetation follows a small creek through the Pinyon-juniper foothills of the Sandia Mountains above 6500' elevation, and is hardly suitable for a breeding pair of Red-eyed Vireos. Although it is unclear whether they successfully breed here. Otherwise, REVIs are rare migrants throughout the lowlands of New Mexico. The male vireo was singing inconsistently throughout the morning, making initial detection difficult. This video was taken on 28 May 2007 between 9:00 and 10:00 AM MST.

Red-necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus)

This transitional-plumaged Red-necked Phalarope spent a few days in a freshwater pool at Bosque del Apache NWR in San Antonio. Interestingly, the phalarope was retaining a fair amount of juvenal plumage, especially on the mantle and scapulars. The buff-colored stripes are noticeable on the upperparts. This poor quality, documentation digi-video was taken on 27 May 2007 between 2:00 and 3:00 PM MST. RNPHs are rare migrants in spring, mid-May- early June, to ponds and lakes throughout New Mexico.

Green Violet-Ear (Colibri thalassinus thalassinus)

Nearly annual in TX, this adult male Green Violet-Ear appeared in Sharon Finlay's yard in late April 2007. This rare visitor from the pine-oak highlands of Mexico is becoming a fairly regular occurrence in summer/fall throughout the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. This particular male spent most of the summer at the Finlay residence, finally departing in mid-July. The pine-oak woodlands surrounding the property must have slightly resembled the hummingbird's native habitat in MX. This video was taken on 12 May 2007 at ~9:00 AM CST.
