Watershed Park (Ken)

Last Sunday, April 15, Delta Nats Joyce, Jennifer, Eleanor, Ursula and Terry McComas had a ball “manning” our Display Booth at Delta Corp.’s Fish release event at Watershed Park. An estimated 700 people attended this event. A dozen or so adults and children joined Tom on the pre-event Bird Walk through the park to the Fish Release area at the artesian wells. Nine of us (Anne M, Ken B, Eleanor, newbie Eric, John McF, Kay G, Marian P, Point Bob Paul and Tom) enjoyed a very productive Wednesday morning of birding at Point Roberts, USA. We had lots of hi-lites including: Red-necked and Horned Grebes, Pacific Loons, Rhinoceros Auklets, Common Murre, Harbour Porpoises, many ducks in beaut plumage (Harlequins), Hairy Woodpecker, first Violet-green Swallows, Caspian Tern, Sanderlings and hundreds of Brant Geese. Reifel Nest Boxes (Ken)

On Tuesday morning several Delta Nats (Ken B & Anne, Kitty, Jonathan and Tom) helped Peter, Ken H, Shanna and Kathleen install 10 new Bird Nest Boxes at Reifel Bird Sanctuary. We then walked back up the main road, cleaning out or taking down (for repairs) old nest boxes which had been placed high on trees or poles. Close-ups of Pileated Woodpecker & Mink.

Serpentine Nesting Boxes-Ken

In preparation for the impending arrival of the swallows, seven members of the White Rock and Surrey Naturalists Society recently gathered at the Serpentine Fen to clean out nest boxes, and record their findings under the guidance of Naturalist, Gareth Pugh. In some cases, boxes needed repairs, while four boxes in poor condition were replaced with new nesting boxes donated by Wild Birds Unlimited, South Surrey. Many of the nest boxes showed evidence of nesting by Tree Swallows in the previous Spring. The two Wood Duck nest boxes we could reach both showed evidence of nesting. It's going to take a long ladder to check out the other Wood Duck boxes! Most of the nest boxes showed evidence of nesting by Tree Swallows in the previous Spring. Reifel Nesting Boxes-Ken

Peter Ward, Ken Hall, John Toochin, Anne Murray & Ken Borrie, assisted by Reifel biologist Shanna Fredericks, spent a wet Thursday cleaning out nesting boxes at Reifel, and recording their findings. Many of the boxes were originally constructed and placed by Peter, Ken H & John. There was evidence of an excellent success ratio of nesting Tree Swallows. The elliptical baffles placed on some boxes is succeeding in keeping out the House Sparrows. Four Sandhill Cranes came across the pond to see what we were doing - then another 3. Shortly afterwards, two more Cranes appeared on the path ahead, walking along with us to the Lookout, for a total of 9 Sandhill Cranes!

BBRP Nest Boxes-Ken

Eight Delta Nats spent a glorious Thursday morning “opening and cleaning” the 28 bird nesting boxes at Boundary Bay Regional Park. Bird Box Guru Don Farquhar dropped by at 9:30 a.m. at our 12th Street parking lot meeting place to give us a “revised” map. Tsawwassen Ferry Port - Ken

The Dirty Dozen (Rick & Mark, Ken & Anne, Roger & Mike, Alan & Lorna, Anne & Hans-Ulf, Eleanor and Tom) spent a gorgeous and productive Wednesday morning of birding along the causeway to the Tsawwassen Ferry Port and then at Reifel Bird Sanctuary. Hi-lites were: Black Oystercatchers, Caspian Terns, our destination bird the Willet, Sandhill Cranes and lots of newly-arrived Shorebirds including Dowitchers, Spotted Sandpiper and many Peeps (Western, Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers), and of course the fresh Strawberry and Blueberry Sundae at Emma-Lea’s Farm. This Wednesday saw a small turnout with Mike, Lorna, Marion and Roger meeting at Petra’s and being joined at the Iona parking lot by Ken and Anne, their daughter Christie, and a new participant, David, who added some humor and experience to the group. We had been orphaned again with Tom volunteering at the Canadian Open RBC Golf Tournament and Anne busy with guests. Strangely enough, we were able to see the golf course across the river from where we were and saw an individual, through the telescope, wearing an official’s shirt. Looking at his knobby knees, Lorna said, “I think that’s Tom”. (more at http://dncb.wordpress.com/)

Boundary Bay - Ken

Nine birders (Roger & Mike, Alan & Marian, Ken & Anne, Anne M, Lorna and me) left Petra’s at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday and just went down 12th Avenue to the parking lot at the entrance to Boundary Bay Regional Park. Our morning walk through the Park was fairly quiet bird wise, but featured some newly-arrived Shorebirds (mostly Peeps), residents feeding young (e.g. Common Yellowthroats) and lots neat flowers and insects. http://dncb.wordpress.com/

S. Arm Marshes & Ladner Harbour Park - Ken

Nine participants enjoyed a quiet (i.e. not a lot of neat species seen) Wednesday morning of birding at the South Arm Marshes Wildlife Management Area (SAMWMA) and Ladner Harbour Park... We (Lorna, Roger & Mike, Ken & Anne, Donna, Anne M., Eleanor and Tom) had gorgeous weather; the hi-lites were: several nesting parents feeding young (Northern Flickers, Downy Woodpeckers, Tree Swallows); Warbling Vireos and lunch and beer at Speeds Pub in Ladner.

A Dirty Dozen of birders (Rick & Marg, Ken & Anne & newbie Christy, Eleanor, Lorna, Mike B, Anne M, Marian, Donna and Tom) spent a beautiful Wednesday morning at historic Stewart Farm and Elgin Park, and then at Blackie Spit Park in South Surrey. Hi-lites were several Willow Flycatchers, Purple Martins, and lots of “candy birds” up-close-and-personal (e.g. Wilsons Warblers, Rufous Hummingbirds, Black-headed Grosbeaks, Cedar Waxwings).
