Harmon Colors, Haledon, New Jersey Plant

Harmon Colors began producing organic pigments in Brooklyn in the 1920s. The company moved to a larger site in Haledon, New Jersey in the early 1930s. During WW II American Home Products purchased the plant to manufacture drugs. B.F. Goodrich and Allied Chemical were subsequent owners. Bayer AG purchased the business in 1977 and established the Harmon Colors Corporation. This eventually became a division of Mobay Chemical Corporation, the U.S. subsidiary of Bayer. The Haledon ploant was closed in 1993 after transferring production to a new pigments manufacturing unit in Bushy Park, South Carolina. The buildings were demolished and environmental remediation was carried out under the guidance of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Verona Dyestuffs Division of Mobay Chemical Corporation, Bayonne Plants Photos 1970-1984

In the early 1970s the Verona Dyestuff Division of Baychem Corporation (Bayer US subsidiary) succeeded the Verona-Pharma Chemical Corporaiton which had represented the merger of Pharma Chemical Corporation and the Verona Chemical Company since 1957. By the mid 1970s the company became known as the Verona Dyestuff Division of Mobay Chemical Corporation (Bayer US subsidiary). Bayonne Plant 1, dating to WW I, closed in 1981 and Plant 2, dating to 1950, closed in 1984, with dye production transferred to the newer Verona plant in Bushy Park, SC.

Damascus, Virginia Dyes Plant Demolition July 1, 1986-March 1987

Photos of demolition of Mobay Chemical Corporation dyes plant during July 1, 1986 to March 1987. Photos taken by G. Lewis Morgan, Plant Manager. Plant was built in the WW I era as the Beaver Chemical Co., manufacturer of sulfur dyes. The plant site was environmentally remediated and donated to the city of Damascus as a park.

Pharma Chemical Corporation 1920s-1968

Photographs of management staff and employees of the Pharma Chemical Corporation, which had offices in New York and a plant at 169 W. 52nd Street in Bayonne, NJ. The plant manufactured dyestuffs since the WW I era. The company was founded by Dr. Eugene A. Markush, a chemist who had immigrated from Hungary.

Damascus, Virginia Dyes Plant

Photos of the Mobay Chemical Corporation dyes plant taken in March 1981, shortly after the acquisition of the business from American Cyanamid. The plant was established in the WW I era by John L. Crist, a chemist who began his career with the Federal Dyestuff and Chemical Corporation of nearby Kingsport, Tennessee. The plant produced primarily sulfur dyes for cotton in addition to specialties such as alizarin and oil dyes for plastics and petroleum coloration. The plant was closed in 1986.

Verona Dyestuffs Plant 1, Bayonne, New Jersey

Series of photos taken around 1975 of new facilities and process equipment for the production of Phorwite optical brighteners and the improvement of the wastewater treatment unit. These photos were taken by Peter F. Vogt, Ph. D., former plant manager of the Verona Dyestuffs facility. He is the proprietor of Wincom, Inc., (www.wincom-inc.com) , a producer of high quality corrosion inhibitors.
