White Gifts Sunday 2010

“Some say it all began about 1000 years ago in the mighty kingdom of Cathay –where there ruled a very rich and very powerful king called Kubla Khan. Unlike many kings, Kubla Khan was generous and wise. He treated the rich and the poor alike, and was especially kind to little children. “One year his subjects decided to hold a great birthday party for him to honor him as their king. They knew that he treated all his people the same, so they decided that all the gifts to be presented would be wrapped in white so they would all look the same. “On the king’s birthday, some were able to bring only a handful of rice –but it was wrapped in white. Others brought beautiful ivory and precious jewels, but these too were wrapped in white. All the gifts looked the same, and when the king unwrapped them he appreciated them all equally, because he knew that each gift was given with the same degree of love and devotion as the next.” White Gifts Sunday, Third Sunday of Advent, 2010.

Happy 99th Birthday Agnes Clevenger

August 9, 2009 was a special occasion at Central Union Church. At the10:00 a.m. service the congregation paused to sing 'Happy Birthday' to Agnes Clevenger, a member of the church family for 55 years who turned 99m years young. She is a valued member of Central Union Church, and we all wish her the very best.

Youth on the Move! Trip to San Francisco

A team of ten Central Union high school youth recently embarked on a special mission to work among the homeless in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. Carol Asuncion and Karl Hedberg accompanied the youth. “We stayed at Youth With A Mission” on Ellis Street,” Carol Asuncion reported. “We fed the homeless breakfast at Glide Memorial, shared sack lunch in the park, distributed hot cocoa, and packed pasta for two hours at the Food Bank.” Central Union’s youth also ministered to the homeless that included prayer sessions. They also toured parts of San Francisco. During their travels Central Union’s youth found opportunities to listen and understand the problems besetting the city’s homeless population. “During their talks with the homeless,” Carol Asuncion said, “they found out it does not take much for people to end up on the streets, especially in these economic times.”

Installation of Ministers: March 1, 2009

On March 1, 2009 history was made at Central Union Church with the simultaneous installation of three ministers: Rev. Dr. Lawrence W. Corbett; Rev. Nancy B. Lockwood; and Rev. Dean J. Vestal. The congregation of the church is grateful to its clergy, church members, Church Council officers and members, lay leaders, church staff, youth representatives, chorus and musicians, and the leaders of the Oahu Association and Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ for making this event truly successful and memorable. Ecclesiastical Council for Rev. Dean Vestal

On January 25, 2009 an Ecclesiastical Council of the Oahu Association to examine Rev. Dean Vestal was held at 4:00 p.m. at Manoa Valley Church UCC. Rev. Darren Galindo, President of the Oahu Association, called the gathering to order and led in opening prayer. Susan Tengan, Chairperson of the Church and Ministry Committee delivered an introduction and explained the agenda. Rev. Dean Vestal described his faith journey, which was followed by a question-and-answer session. Deliberations followed, then voting. The affirmative decision was announced. A benediction was delivered with the gathered people meeting for refreshments in the Fellowship Hall. Congratulations to Rev. Dean Vestal!

Commissioning Missionaries

A commissioning service for Christie Furukawa, Virginia Valen, Janice Trubitt and Julie Trubitt was held on December 21, 2008 during the 9:00 a.m. service in the main sanctuary. "Christie, Virginia, Janice and Julie you are commissioned on behalf of your church to serve as missionaries in India. 'Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God through Him.' (Col. 3:17) May the God of peace keep and hold you in the name of Christ Jesus. Amen."

2008 Handel's Messiah Concert

Our 61st annual Handel's Messiah performance was performed December 6th at 7pm in the Sanctuary. This free performance of the Messiah is one of Central Union’s most treasured gifts to the community. Attendance increased this year with some enjoying the performance from the lawn areas. Performing this evening were Catherine Goto, soprano; Susan Purnell, mezzo soprano; Douglas Hall, tenor; James Price, tenor; Christopher kelsey, bass; Marget lloyd, harpsichord; the Central Union Church Oratorio Choir; members of the Honolulu Symphony, and Dr. Timothy Carney, conductor.

Pohnpeian Worship

Pohnpeian Worship is held at 11:00 a.m. The service is conducted in Atherton Chapel, located on the Ewa-side of the main sanctuary. The Rev.Radigan David preaches. This photo album offers a glimpse of this remarkable and beautiful experience. From the January, 1944 edition of The Friend, Honolulu, is the following: "The whole purpose of worship is that men and women together may be lifted in thought and feeling in order that they may desire and love, that they may will and realize finer, richer, more Godlike lives and service in a wider, richer world. Worship is man's search for the society of God. Performers include Nyle Hallman; Margaret Lloyd, Associate Minister of Music/Principal Organist and current Dean of the Hawaii Chapter of the American Guild of Organists; and Constance Harding Uejio, Principal Harpist of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and wedding coordinator and organist at Central Union Church.

Ecclesiastical Council for Rev. Dr. Lawrence Corbett

An Ecclesiastical Council of the Oahu Association of the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ was convened on August 24, 2008. Its purpose was to examine the Rev. Dr. Larry Corbett of Central Union Church. The location was First Chinese Church of Christ on South King Street, Honolulu. We are pleased to announce that his examination was successful. Rev. Dr. Lawrence Corbett now has standing in the United Church of Christ.
