COAPS Assistant State Climatologist Melissa Griffin teaches participants about tornadoes using a "tornado in a jar" simulation.
The event was well-attended by homeschooling families, who appreciated the free books and activity ideas provided by COAPS.
Melissa Griffin is also co-coordinator of the Florida Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network, and showed participants how hail is measured using hail pads made out of styrofoam and tin foil.
Melissa uses golf balls and marbles to simulate hail.
Melissa also showed students how rain gauges work and how to correctly read a rain gauge.
