As the state co-coordinator for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network, Melissa Griffin setup a water balloon toss to teach children about rain gauges. The children try to collect water in the rain gauge by breaking water balloons against a board with nails, then measure how much water fell into the gauge.
Learning how to properly read a rain gauge.
Another activity involved a hail pad made out of styrofoam and tin foil. Children drop marbles and golf balls onto the pad, then measure the diameter of the imprint made in the styrofoam.
