Niall Ferguson Lecture (16NOV11)

On Nov. 16, Niall Ferguson, noted author and Professor of History at Harvard University and William Ziegler Professor at Harvard Business School, was a guest lecturer for the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College "Colin L. Powell Lecture Series" sponsored by the CGSC Foundation, Inc. Ferguson provided what most students believed to be one of the most compelling presentations by a guest lecturer they had witnessed. Ferguson also visited a few staff groups and had lunch with a mixed audience of CGSC staff and faculty and CGSC Foundation trustees.

Ethics Symposium 2011 Day 1 (7NOV)

The 2011 Fort Leavenworth Ethics Symposium sponsored by the CGSC Foundation kicked off at 4 p.m., Nov. 7, with the inauguration of the first-ever privately funded academic chair in the history of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Dr. John Mark Mattox was seated as the visiting professor for Gen. Hugh Shelton Chair in Ethics with a short ceremony in the Marshall Auditorium of the Lewis and Clark Center at Fort Leavenworth. A reception followed.

NSRT (1NOV11)

Nov. 1, 2011, the CGSC Foundation supported the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in the conduct of a National Security Roundtable focused on China. Col. John Buckley, Director of the CGSC Dept. of Joint, Interagency and Multinational Operations and members of his faculty team led the discussion panels. Amb. Stephen Young, the Consul General from Hong Kong and Macau, was the keynote speaker and a special guest speaker was Dr Munro Richardson from the Kauffman Foundation. Twelve business leaders from around the country along with their CGSC military student escorts attended the roundtable.

CGSCF Golf Tourn (6SEP11)

The CGSC Foundation conducted its first annual golf tournament on Sept. 6, 2011. Many of the members of the Foundation board of trustees participated along with other friends of the foundation. Lt. Gen. Robert L. Caslen, Jr., Commandant of the Command and General Staff College. addressed the assembled golfers before the start of the tournament and thanked the Foundation and its trustees for their support of the College.

Lt. Gen. Arter tandem jump (6SEP11)

Lt. Gen. Robert Arter, U.S. Army Ret., the 81-year-old Chairman of the Command and General Staff College Foundation, Inc., and the Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for the state of Kansas, made a tandem jump onto the golf course at Fort Leavenworth as the kickoff for the CGSC Foundation’s First Annual Golf Tournament at 10 a.m., Sept. 6. The Ranger Group, LLC, and Armed Forces Bank sponsored the jump. The Ranger Group President/CEO Mark “Ranger” Jones is the vice president for development for the CGSC Foundation. Ranger has logged more than 4,000 parachute jumps in his former military career and employs a parachute demonstration team as part of his company’s outreach program. The Ranger Group Parachute Team Captain, Mike Elliot, a former U.S. Army Special Forces Soldier, was Arter’s lead in the tandem jump. Arter’s 82nd birthday and the Foundation’s 2011 annual board meeting were Sept. 7.

NSRT (25-26APR11)

Twelve civilian business leaders from around the country attended the Spring 2011 National Security Roundtable at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, April 25-26, hosted by the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College with support from the Command and General Staff College Foundation, Inc. Col. Wayne Grigsby, Director of the School for Advanced Military Studies, and his students in the SAMS program shared insights into their study of operational art and planning design and performed as guides for the attendees. CGSC Deputy Commandant Brig. Gen. Sean MacFarland provided the opening remarks at the reception with a spirited discussion on Mexico, which was the focus of this roundtable. Mr. Johnny Lairsy, a plans specialist from U.S. Army North, provided a detailed briefing on the issues surrounding U.S.-Mexico relations. Foundation Chairman retired Lt. Gen. Bob Arter assisted Brig. Gen. MacFarland in presenting certificates to the attendees.

Gen Shelton DLA (7APR11)

Retired General Hugh Shelton was the recipient of the 2011 CGSC Foundation Distinguished Leadership Award. The Foundation honored Gen. Shelton at an award dinner at the State Club on the North Carolina State University campus on April 7, 2011. Ross Perot was the special guest speaker. The award and citation were presented by Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Robert Arter, the Foundation Chairman, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) John Miller, the vice chairman, Mr. Hyrum Smith, the president, and Mark "Ranger" Jones, the vice president for development.

BoT Fun Shoot & BBQw/Cmdnt (23MAR11)

Members of the CGSC Foundation Board of Trustees gathered on the day before their first meeting of the year for a fun shoot at Brunner Range on Fort Leavenworth. After the afternoon's friendly competition members of the Foundation leadership and board were hosted at a BBQ dinner at Quarters 1 by Lt. Gen. Caslen, the CGSC Commandant.

HLS Symposium (15MAR11)

The Homeland Security Symposium at Fort Leavenworth was co-sponsored and hosted by the Command and General Staff College Foundation, Inc., and Kansas State University in support of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC). This symposium is a follow on to the Homeland Security Education Needs Analysis Workshop conducted in 2008.

2010 Ethics Symposium- Day 2 (16NOV10)

Day 2 started out with a video message from Lt. Gen. Caslen introduced by Brig. Gen. MacFarland. Next was a presentation by Dr. Snider followed by a CAPE presentation by Col. Hannah and CAPE breakout sesssions with each small group leader reporting out to the whole group. The evening concluded at the Leavenworth Riverfront Community Center with a reception and dinner hosted by the CGSC Foundation with guest speaker Dr. Jonathan Shay.

2010 Ethics Symposium- Day 1 (15NOV10)

Opening comments by CGSC Foundation Chairman Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Robert Arter and CGSC Deputy Commandant Brig. Gen. Sean MacFarland were followed by a presentation to the current CGSC class by Dr. Martin Cook. Cook is the Admiral James Bond Stockdale Professor of Professional Military Ethics at the United States Naval War College. His presentation was titled "Professional Ethics Across the Career Spectrum.” After Dr. Cook's presentation the Foundation hosted a reception for symposium attendees in the Lewis & Clark Center Atrium.

NSRT (13-14SEP10)

The U.S. Army Command and General Staff College with support from the CGSC Foundation conducted a National Security Roundtable program, Sept. 13-14 at the Lewis and Clark Center. The roundtable discussion panels focused on issues surrounding the continent of Africa and how our nation engages with the various countries and armies with all elements of U.S. national power. The participants were each escorted by a CGSC student throughout the program.

Summit on Expeditionary Economics (25-27MAY10)

"Expeditionary economics" has already sparked recent interest and debate in the highest levels of the military. From May 25-27 at the Kauffman Conference Center, the Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City and the Command and General Staff College Foundation co-hosted the Summit on Entrepreneurship and Expeditionary Economics, where military leaders and scholars explored in-depth how to implement the doctrine in the field. Simons Center Grand Opening (21APR10)

The Command and General Staff College Foundation conducted a grand opening ceremony for the “Col. Arthur D. Simons Center for the Study of Interagency Cooperation” April 21, on Fort Leavenworth. Located at 655 Biddle Boulevard on the Fort Leavenworth installation, the “Col. Arthur Simons Center” is a research, analysis, studies and publication center focused on interagency issues at the tactical and operational levels of war. The center is funded through the Command and General Staff College Foundation and was made possible with a generous gift of $3.2 million by Mr. Ross Perot in November 2009. The center will provide direct support to the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in fulfilling its mission of educating and developing leaders for full spectrum joint, interagency and multinational operations.

Powell Lecture Series-Ross Perot (21APR10)

Ross Perot delivers a lecture to students in the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., as part of the "Colin L. Powell Lecture Series, April 21, 2010. Perot was in the Kansas City area to be honored as the third recipient of the CGSC Foundation's Distinguished Leadership Award and to participate in the grand opening of the Col. Arthur D. Simons Center which he supported with a generous donation in the Fall of 2009. The intent of the Powell Lecture Series is to invite national and international distinguished personalities to provide lectures on contemporary issues to the CGSC faculty and student body, as well as community and business leaders.

Perot Distinguished Leadership Award (20APR10)

The Command and General Staff College Foundation presented Mr. Ross Perot with the Foundation’s 2010 Distinguished Leadership Award at a dinner banquet at the Marriott Muehlebach Hotel in Kansas City, Mo., April 20. Perot, the well-known entrepreneur and two-time presidential candidate from Texas, is the third recipient of the Foundation national award. Previous awardees include the 2008 recipient, Gen. Colin L. Powell, former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the 2009 recipient, Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan, 32nd Chief of Staff of the Army and President of the Association of the United States Army.

NSRT 30NOV-1DEC09

The Command and General Staff College supported by the CGSC Foundation conducted a "National Security Roundtable Nov. 30 thru Dec. 1, 2009 at Fort Leavenworth. The NSRT kicked off with a reception in the Lewis and Clark Center which was highlighted by a briefing from Lt. Gen. Ben Freakley. The next day participants had the opportunity to sit in seminar groups with their SAMS student escorts, hear a detailed analysis about U.S. operations in Afghanistan, and sit in a presentation by Amb. Ryan Crocker in the Eisenhower Auditorium. The NSRT concluded with remarks by the Acting Commandant Brig. Gen. Ed Cardon and presentations to each of the participants.

Ethics Symposium (16-18NOV09)

The U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the CGSC Foundation, Inc., co-sponsored the Fort Leavenworth Ethics Symposium, Nov. 16-18, 2009, at the Frontier Conference Center on Fort Leavenworth. CGSC students, faculty, academicians from other military colleges, civilian business leaders, and Foundation trustees made up the audience for this first in a series of three annual ethics symposia. This first symposium was focused on "Ethical and Legal Issues in Contemporary Conflict."

H. Ross Perot was hosted by the CGSC Foundation on a visit to the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College Oct. 20, 2009. Mr. Perot met with Brig. Gen. Ed Cardon, CGSC Deputy Commandant, and then had a chance to sit in a class, tour the Lewis & Clark Center, attend a presentation to the CGSS class by retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honore and tour the Fort Leavenworth post.

The CGSC Foundation presented the 2009 Distinguished Leadership Award to Gen. (Ret.) Gordon R. Sullivan, President & COO, Association of the U.S. Army and the 32d Chief of Staff of the Army, in an award dinner at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Arlington, Va., April 7, 2009. Gen. Sullivan was recognized for his 50 years of service to Soldiers, the Army and the Nation. More than 200 guests were on hand for the dinner. The "Old Guard" provided the color guard and the Fife and Drum Corps played the traditional National Anthem. Another highlight of the evening, and a complete surprise to Gen. Gordon, was the tribute video that reviewed his career in and out of uniform.--It also included remarks from several prominent officers and friends of Gen. National Security Roundtable Program 17MAR09

The National Security Roundtable Series is hosted by the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and sponsored by the CGSC Foundation. The intent of the roundtables is to bring together a forum of leaders several times each year from business, finance, industry, academia and the government sectors to discuss and examine the national security environment, in general, followed by an in-depth examination of a particular region or country. The NSRT on March 17 focused on the Middle East with a special look at military operations in Iraq. There were two panel discussions: one led by faculty members on the issues in the region and another led by students who have personal experience in operations in Iraq. Throughout the day, visitors each had a personal student escort who gave them a short tour of the Lewis and Clark Center and took them to their staff group to experience the instructional environment and information delivered in their classrooms.

Col. Donlon Book Signing

Col. Roger Donlon, U.S. Army, Ret., a member of the CGSC Foundation Board of Trustees and more importantly, a Medal of Honor Recipient, conducted a book signing on Sept. 11, 2008, in the Foundation's office and gift shop in the Lewis and Clark Center on Fort Leavenworth. Donlon donated a portion of the book sales to the Foundation. His biography, "Beyond Nam Dong" is on sale in the Foundation's gift shop year round or can be ordered from Col. Donlon's web site at www.homeofheroes.com/donlon.
