Overview

Here's a nice overview of the places we saw and things we did in New England. Martha's Vineyard is a small island off Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Great-Grandma lived here, Grandma & Daddy spent their summers growing up here, and Daddy & Mommy got married on the Vineyard. We came to pay our respects to Grandma, and (as she would've wanted) to have a good time. Even though it wasn't the same without her, we did do both!

Farewell Grandma S

Michael's Grandmother had recently passed away, so we went to the Vineyard to pay our respects. She was a wonderful lady who loved us all very much, and we in return. We respected her two wishes: 1) just a small short memorial ceremony and 2) please have a good time out here.

Grandma's House

Uncle Tom has done a great job with the house, lots of new paint and renovations but plenty to remind you it was Grandma’s house. Anya loved the large yard, as my brothers and I did when we were little. We also spent our evenings at auntie Betsy's house, who let us use her place!

Larsen's Lobsters

A majority of my relatives are fishermen, and operate four island fish markets, including two in Menemsha. They went out of their way to make sure we got the best lobsters and freshest fish, including flounder, yellowtail, and halibut. We rarely ate out at all!

Menemsha Bight

While picturesque, this is a working fishing village, not some artists colony. Every night during my summers, we'd walk along the docks to see what was going on. I put these photos in order by the route of our traditional evening walks. It was fun showing Anya some of my younger memories.

Up Island

Chilmark & West Tisbury: Those associated with our wedding will know these places well, as the sites of our wedding and rental house respectively. Up-island is primarily agricultural, rather than fishing or tourism-oriented. They exemplify the traditional New England villages, complete with the white churches.

Gay Head

Recently renamed Aquinnah, after the original name by the Wampanoag Indians. Home of the famous cliffs and lighthouse, it's the least-populated town on the Vineyard. I also like how it's the least-wooded and hilliest, affording nice scenery, like Nashaquitsa Pond.

Vineyard Haven

The commercial center of the island, many tourists only know Vineyard Haven for the ferry landing. The stores seem to cater more to year-round residents, with grocery stores and bookshops.

Oak Bluffs

Perhaps my favorite town growing up, it's the Vineyard's version of Waikiki. Lots of tourist shops, bars, restaurants, and nightlife; and all but vacant in the off-season. That said, the Gingerbread Victorian architecture gives it a charm lots of tourist traps lack.

Edgartown

The seat of the County of Dukes County (redundancy noted), we never really visited this town too much when I was little. It was always too crowded in the summer. We came in the tail-end of the off-season, where many tourists were gone, but the places were still open. So, Edgartown always feels like a new part of the Vineyard for me.

Woods Hole & Ferry

Ignore the album dates, I just wanted to put the albums in that order. Chronologically, this would be the first album, as the ferry leaves from Woods Hole. One 45-minute boat cruise later, you're on Martha's Vineyard. We took a day-trip off-island back here. Or as we say in Hawaii, went to the mainland. We rode the ferry over and explored the home of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, which found the Titanic.

Downtown Boston

We stayed in Boston for two full days before our flight home. Knowing how much Anya loved New York, I was looking forward to exploring this historical city. Unfortunately, it constantly rained the whole time here. As in all 48 hours we were in Boston. We didn't let it totally dampen (heh) our spirits, and we forged ever onward!

Back Bay & Harvard

While we missed a few areas due to the rain, like Old North Church and the USS Constitution, our unlimited "T" subway passes made a lot of areas very accessible. The indoor malls of Back Bay helped bide our time during the heavier showers. When the rain got a little lighter, we headed up to Anya's future college in Cambridge!
