Circle Line Cruise

A three-hour boat ride, completely circumnavigating Manhattan island. To truly appreciate this album, do not click each picture or the Slideshow option. Get thee hence to the "View Map". On the map select "Satellite" to get an overhead photo of NYC. Then click the pictures to take the cruise!

Top of the Rock

Atop the 70-story GE Building at 30 Rockefeller Center, we revisited this observation deck from 2007. Only, this time, we went at sunset. The map locations show the general direction the pictures were taken toward.

Brooklyn

In the interest of seeing new places from 2007, we spent the day in Brooklyn. We wandered around the picturesque Heights and viewed the stunning view from the Promenade. Downtown Brooklyn has some underrated architecture, which we explored on the way to the subway. As it turned out, most of that ride was above ground, so it afforded us great views of "The City of Neighborhoods".

Coney Island

Visiting places we didn't see in 2007 took us to the far reaches of Brooklyn. I knew Coney Island was past it's prime, but I was still surprised how sad and lonely the boardwalk seemed. On the bright side, no lines for the Wonder Wheel or Cyclone roller coaster! Can you dig it?

Chinatown & Greenwich Village

Mixing these two neighborhoods may seem odd, as there couldn't be two more different places. One is chaotic and crowded, while the other is almost like a small peaceful town. We also stuck trendy Union Square here.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Poor Anya, she's only three years old and she's already been to two of the premiere museums in the world. The American Museum of Natural History last year, and now the Metropolitan Museum of Art! How can we top this?

Central Park

Lots of stuff to do here, in this well-planned oasis in the city. One highlight was renting a rowboat around the lake, something I did with Dulce back in our 2002 visit. We revisited Heckscher Playground from last year, only this time the play area had water fountains.

New Jersey

Our second hotel was the DoubleTree Club Hotel, where we earned a free stay. It was a 10-minute PATH train or Waterway ferry to Manhattan, although with the mall and Target, Jersey City had some neat stuff to see anyway. Especially the view along the Hudson River walkway!

2007 Times Square

This is not the same Times Square we grew up with. Toys R Us and M&M's World have replaced the peep shows and grindhouse theaters. The lights have never been brighter and it was a great place to stay around, although it was really crowded. We stayed at the DoubleTree Guest Suites Times Square. Without a doubt, one of the finest hotels I've stayed at. Each room was a 2-room suite, which made it easier with Anya.

2007 Roosevelt Island

Anya and I rode this aerial tramway across the East River. The 5-minute ride offered great views of the city, the bridge, and the river. Roosevelt Island is a thin isle in the East River, with nice views of Manhattan.

2007 Toy Stores and Big pianos

Macy's, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue... yawn. The real action is at the toy stores, from FAO Schwarz to Toys R Us to the American Girl Store.

2007 Central Park

Our urban oasis, it was a great place to cut Anya loose and not worry about the busy city streets. She enjoyed running up and down the hills and crossing the bridges and tunnels. There was so much to explore, but one particular high point was Heckscher Playground, a gigantic whee-whee!

2007 Rockefeller Center views

Rather than the Empire State Building, we went atop the 850 feet, 70-story GE Building at Rockefeller Center. The "Top of the Rock" observation deck was a lot more open and less crowded.

2007 Brooklyn Bridge crossing

We walked a whole mile across the East River. We first took a long subway ride to get to Brooklyn, then walked back toward Manhattan. The walkway is set above the traffic, so it was a safe area for Anya to walk. This was a highlight of our 2002 trip to NYC, and one I knew I had to repeat.

2007 Wall Street & The Battery

The Financial District, with Wall Street and the former World Trade Center. Battery Park is on the tip of Manhattan and afforded nice views of the harbor, including the Statue of Liberty.

2007 NY Waterway

I wanted to do a boat cruise on the Hudson River, and this water taxi was the perfect option. We took the boat from Wall Street to Hoboken, NJ, and then from Jersey City's Newport to 39th Street. Even though we live in Hawaii, this was Anya's first boat ride.

2007 View from Jersey City

Here we are on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River. Jersey City is quite the boomtown, with lots of skyscrapers going up. Observing the stunning Manhattan views from the docks, I can see that people would rather live here and look at New York, than vice versa.

2007 Central Park Zoo

Anya had a blast at the zoo, and the Tisch Children's zoo next door. While not as huge as the Bronx Zoo, this was perfect for the two of us. We went right when it opened, so we were done before the large school groups came in.

2007 Greenwich Village & Soho

The Village is our favorite strolling neighborhood, it's easy to forget you're in the largest city in the US. It's very peaceful and scaled-down with nice-looking houses. Were we to live in NY, it would be here.

2007 American Museum of Natural History

One word: "diso-saurs!" I could've spent all day in this museum and still not have seen everything. We still saw plenty, though, including a Space Show at the Rose Center. We also visited the surprisingly modest Manhattan Children's Museum on the Upper West Side

2007 Shopping and Eating

Let's see, how did we do? Pastrami and corned beef on rye: check. Half-sour pickles: check. Egg cream: check. Cheesecake: check. Cel-Ray: check. Knish: check. NY-style Pizza: check. Hot dog with onion relish: check. Bagel with a schmear: check. We also browsed institutions like Macy's, Bloomingdale's, and Canal Street.

2007 City Shots

I took 1,275 photos in New York. With around four gigabytes of SD cards, I shot everything. I was the tourist with the camera slung over the neck gaping up at the buildings. Be sure to check out the panoramas I stitched together.

2007 Big Apple Anya

"The Grandparents Album". Some random pictures of Anya in the city. Her favorite part of NYC? The subway ("choo-choo")! She would step on and step off when it was time. On the train, she sit still on the seat smiling at me. After a while, she would ignore the "no eye-contact" rule and start waving "HI!" to everyone. It got to the point that she'd fuss whenever we passed a station on the street.
